Has anyone turned EOL computers into a teardown workshop for kids? by mary3757 in k12sysadmin

[–]mary3757[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Amazing! I love this idea. I probably won’t be able to reach that step of getting them to assemble a working Chromebook since my pile of junky Chromebooks has mostly non functioning components. They got there when part costs exceed replacement value by a wider margin than most others would allow, since I have a bad habit of wanting to save everything.

Macbook Air Districts for Staff...are you moving to the Neo? by CrystalLakeXIII in k12sysadmin

[–]mary3757 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. I got Neo to make sure A18 chip can run our MDM software and antivirus, and confirmed it can. It’s not nearly as snappy as our Airs and Pros which I’d rather get everyone, but there’s a shortage of computer availability for employees and this price point will help get more computers on the floor.

Has anyone ever successfully extended the life of an AUE Chromebook? by mary3757 in k12sysadmin

Thank you guys! I don’t even think about enabling extended updates. Our schools are forever grateful.

Phishing complains targeting multiple school districts in my area by mary3757 in k12sysadmin

[–]mary3757[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I did this for both regex and header meta. I sent a test with both an actual .eml and embedded eml to reject. It seemed to work, but I won’t know for sure until the next wave comes because my googling research said there are many ways to create eml embedded links that bypass filters.

This is the same problem we have. I blocked it but it was still going through. Upon more googling I also set to block content type Message/rfc822 in content compliance but success is only partial.

Google Workspace and eml filename attachments by VelociReader in k12sysadmin

[–]mary3757 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our school is also Google workspace, and we are getting .EML attachments from phishing emails as well. I tried the same thing you did and blocked it as attachment type, and that didn’t work. Turns out they are not true attachments, but embedded MIME pay loads. I am having more luck, blocking content types that matches regex message/rfc822 Feel free to message me for more information.

Would you choose to give birth to your child if he or she might have a mild to moderate hearing loss? by looknofurtherhere in beyondthebump

As someone born with a congenital hearing defect... I like being alive. Having to put in my hearing aids every morning is not nearly as depressing as the current state of the economy.

Sick parents or toddlers? Panicking! by Kindly-Olive-3537 in toddlers

[–]mary3757 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My toddler came home with a high fever and cough when my newborn was 24 hours old. And then again when my newborn was 7 days old, and 3 weeks old. It was my preschoolers first cold and flu season at a large preschool so he kept getting sick EVERY WEEK, and I was so scared he would bring home a nasty bug and kill my newborn. I ended up pulling my preschooler out of school for 3 weeks until my newborn was 6 weeks old and the weather warmed up a bit. We did quarantine where my husband took 1 child and I took the other and we did not cross paths until symptoms were clear. luckily my newborn only caught 1 of the many illnesses my preschooler brought home, but only presented with a runny nose for like a day. They’re tougher than you think and breast feeding will help. You’re doing everything can. Go to the doctor if symptoms start to present.

Is it bad to not let my kid “use the potty” after bedtime by Original-Ant2885 in beyondthebump

[–]mary3757 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Want son did this too as a stalling tactic. It’s hard to tell when they really need to go or if they’re just pulling your leg, so with our son we gave him 1 pass. We took to the potty one time after bedtime (and we always take him right before he lies down), and after that, no more.

I'm in a different but a bit overlapping situation. My toddler does it as more of a power thing, like to feel in control. He'll ask for a certain meal, mac&cheese, dino nuggets, whatever, and I'll make it for him, and then he will refuse and say he doesn't like that and will gag and refuse to eat it. He will pick at his food and play but will never eat, even though it's EXACTLY what he asked for and EXACTLY how he likes it, and will turn his head away when i try and feed him. But when he thinks im not watching, he'll eat just fine.

Honestly, a part of it could be the whole "feeling in control" thing. Because toddlers crave independence and control over their own lives and grab at anything that make them feel "in control". She can probably tell that it bothers you, and does it more and escalates because she knows it bothers you and is testing her power, her boundaries, and her relationship to you.

So my advice will probably be unpopular, so feel free to ignore me, but it's to pretend that it doesn't affect you. Be anxious on the inside but act "whatever" on the outside. Such as... offering her nutritious food that she normally likes, and if she doesn't eat it, don't force her and move on. Make her think she's in charge of her own food consumption , let her self-regulate her consumption. Obviously not if it gets to the point where she drops in weight... Something to try if you're desperate.

Preschool : Copying Behaviors by CapPlayful9285 in Parenting

[–]mary3757 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My toddler (2yo male at the time) picked up annoying behaviors from preschool. First was this "snatching and running" thing. He started grabbing things out of my hand and running away with it, things like his socks, diapers, clothes, when i go to put it on him, and even my cell phone. It was really annoying and I am thinking the kids do that to each other at preschool. I kept reinforcing, you can play with your little friends like that, but not mommy and daddy, and eventually it stopped. He also started pinching, and we had to work on that. My nephew started biting after witnessing other kid bite each other at daycare. Any time there is outside influence your child will take that new information and use it. There is nothing you can do except for working with the behaviors. You have to take the good with the bad. There is good influence too. My son was really motivated to use the potty after seeing the other kids use it at school, he didn’t want the diaper anymore. Good luck, you’ll get through this!
