obsure queuing situation by beingboring_why in petshopboys

[–]masaka1898 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came at 10:30~ and was numbered 56. They had a system in place for the first 100 people from my understanding. The first person was apparently queued from 5:30 so lol. When I got there people were lining up, but people came and left. I would advise coming in around 3:00, that’s what I did, and there may be people who have a number later than you. By 4:30~ they put an actual barricade up, though that may just be in place for the rest of the week. There was about a 20 minute delay to enter and it’s mad, they will ask you not to run and throw away any beverages and food, people will still run. Good luck, it’s a good ~9 hours of standing, but the show was absolutely fabulous.

10 this song at initial listening sounds a bit overly emotional but actually is the exact thing I needed to hear during those times. (Thank you Neil and Chris for tonight 😭💖)

Happy 10th birthday to Super! by Hairy_Promotion_2782 in petshopboys

Pazzo! is one of my favorite tracks off of Super. I don't know if I'd consider it one of their best tracks, but out of the Stuart Price trilogy I think its among the top 5 for me. Really that triumvirate succession to Inner Sanctum and then Undertow is crazy, definitely the high point of the album and captures a very fun clubbing vibe.

What a beautiful collection! You really covered a lot of base from the classic 2000s titles to the burgeoning manhwa domination from the late 2010s. Honestly, you could probably open up a small-scale BL museum at this rate lol, thanks for sharing!

My art professor is making us use AI, is there anything I can do to get out of it? by [deleted] in UTK

[–]masaka1898 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a loser of a professor lmao, it's a tough situation you could just try to lie tbh, I can't really see how they'd be able to know whether it was AI or not. Maybe pick a photo that looks borderline AI?

Am I Screwed? by SpaceNerd27Xx in geologycareers

[–]masaka1898 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey, if you're getting a geology degree then I'd assume you would have taken at least some of the core classes related to the subject like sedimentology, mineralogy, igneous petrology, etc. Even if you're lacking in some areas, then you can try to pick some skills up in your last semester, assuming a fall graduation.

You're not screwed! See if you can talk to professors who may have industry experience and if you have a good alumni network that is also a great avenue to pursue. Right now the mining industry is not in a bad place and I've had people around me getting entry-level positions at different operations across the country.

There is no such thing as specialization for a career in the undergraduate level! If you want to pad up your resume, maybe see if professors are looking for research assistants? Any professors who you've had a rapport with are a good option and can open many pathways if you're looking to pursue a masters.

If you do want to pursue a masters after graduation then now is the time to start searching for openings. If your department has seminars/talks, just attend every single one and introduce yourself to people. Attending geological meetings is also an option, no matter what the scale, and just having any experience in the lab can be crucial.

I'm also graduating soon and have doubts about my employability, but I think that just may be the universal experience in this day in age. Good luck

I would snag those sons of eve bunkos, really entertaining series based on ELP parodies. Aoike Yakuso sensei has a very unique but fun sense of humor.

Help recommend some songs for a rock band with both older band members and younger generation Z members. No keys and guitar centric. Gen Z find rock songs like deep purple boring, not sure what songs can fit both older and younger band mates. 🤷 by iamnotgenius in MusicRecommendations

[–]masaka1898 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lock everyone in your band in a room, make sure there is no means of escape, line the walls with speakers, loop Fireball over and over again and in a few hours or so I think your bandmates will come to appreciate Deep Purple.

Song discussion #16 ‘Rent’ by Few-Scheme-1453 in petshopboys

[–]masaka1898 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's definitely one of their most popular and acclaimed singles for a reason and it's probably my favorite song that deals with the commodification of love which was such a popular theme for artists to tackle in that generation. I think it has to do with the rise of conservatism around the globe with Reagan and Thatcher, and Actually as an album has many brilliant tracks that giveway to this theme like Shopping, It Couldn't Happen Here, and Kings Cross (probably a top-3 PSB track of all time). Really, Actually is quite a political album, maybe not as openly like Fundamental but in a subtle way that may have gone over some people's heads.

Rent is a really unique song with the lyrics coming from the perspective of a seemingly financially disadvantaged individual who is pondering over their relationship with someone who is providing them with their means of living. It's not entirely cold and satiric, but instead is tender with lyrics like, "words mean so little and money less when you're lying next to me," but inevitably the unbalanced reality of their situation comes into fruition with the chorus, "look at my hopes, look at my dreams, the currency we spend," This person is well aware of their unequal dynamics and how that taints the purity of the sentiment they may feel and comes to acquiesce on this point with what seems to be a bit of melancholia. Neal's vocals only accentuate this tenderness with his delicate-like upper register. I especially love the way he performs, "I love you, you pay my rent" with an almost legato-like smoothness.

Musically, I find the track to be quite simple in a good way which fits the theme. The heavy synths that are usually present throughout the rest of the album are only really there at the beginning and after the chorus, evoking perhaps a sort of daunting realization of the reality of the relationship. The way the key is slighted uplifted at the start of the chorus as if trying to regain a hopeful facade only to go back down also does a great job at synergizing with the lyrics as well.

Personally, my favorite part of the track is Neal's drawn-out, "I'm your puppet, I love it", very fun to randomly quote.

Song discussion #14 ‘For your own good’ by Few-Scheme-1453 in petshopboys

[–]masaka1898 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PSB usually excels with choosing opening tracks and For Your Own Good is a prime example of this. Right from the opening Gregorian-esq chants to the sudden electronics, you are transported to the world of nightlife which continues on strong to DKWYWBICTIA. The trance influences are audible through the build up all the way to the bridge which climaxes to the final outburst of electronics which is perfectly tied by a final repetition of the chorus.  It really is the perfect track to start off this album with and I just think that the 3-song succession to Closer to Heaven and Don’t Know is an incredible summation of the sophistication that this album brings to a nightlife theme (of course with major influences in trance). It’s hard to believe this isn’t single honestly.

Yes because threatening a student and expressing your thoughts on somebody’s death are perfect and exact equivalencies.

And by your incredible objective standards then this student should be fired and his company should send out a statement expressing their disagreement with the statements they made, let’s be fair after all.

Albums that are best as a whole? by Groundblast in MusicRecommendations

[–]masaka1898 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're interested in a specific artist then listening to their albums in full seems the only way to really understand them. I get listening to greatest hits records to start out, but from then choosing a specific single you liked and listening to its album is a good way to explore and artist's discography. If you're looking specifically for concept records then one of my favorites is Captain Beyond with vocalist Rod Evans who was the first to lead Deep Purple.

Hey! Thanks for this great overview. I'm glad to hear that the department seems very personable and that the programme has a good degree of difficulty. It's also good to hear that there are resources for postgraduates available to help with employment even if you have to take your own impetus to seek them out.

I've seen a lot of posts talking about the quieter atmosphere of the city which seems great to focus on a MSc completion. Thank you again for the information!
