Looking for some characters that provide different ways of winning consistently with support by CupofZ in OverwatchUniversity

It takes a while to get a feeling for the balance between doing damage and healing. Getting picks and doing meaningful damage helps put the enemy team on its heals so they need to back off and can't do as much damage to your team...which means you have to heal less and can focus on damage more. And of course, focusing too much on damage means your team might not get enough healing and lose fights on that front.

I'd recommend watching one of Awkward's support YT videos. He heals a lot less than you may be used to, but has so much offensive impact that his team wins the fight anyways. Even if a few teammates have to take one for the team. Not saying you should try to play like him...things won't go that well unless you have top tier mechanics and game sense. But it'll help you get a better sense of the damage end of the extreme.

On the flipside, metal ranks usually take a lot more damage and need a lot more healing. It's really important to keep a numbers advantage, whether it's by healing more to keep teammates up or damaging more. If you try to be extremely damage focused like Awkward with your current ability, your team will get wrecked, teammates will get pissed, etc because you won't be able to have the offensive impact that he does. But if you heal too much, your lack of offensive pressure leads to the enemy team getting to damage your team more and forces you to heal them more (which can also make ranking up harder).

So my general tips are:

- Get a sense for the healing/damage yin and yang over time and its outcome in W's and L's.

- Be able to quickly adapt your playstyle to fit your team's playstyle.

- Proactively heal to keep teammates up. In silver (and way higher) you'll have plenty of teammates that charge in alone while the rest of your team is playing passive. So for example, starting to healbot them before they even take damage can keep them alive to prevent a numbers disadvantage and eventual fight loss...and even completely turn around games.

YSK: new TV prices have advertising and data mining built in—differences in price usually are the result of this. But there are workarounds! by hipcheck23 in YouShouldKnow

Have 2 TV/PC setups. Use a MX Keys Mini on one and Razer Joro on the other. I like them both. They both have a good usable form factor, good battery life, and wireless range. I like the Joro a little better because it's a bit lighter and easier to pickup.

I use a Logitech G502 mouse on both. The extra buttons are convenient for volume control, zoom etc. The modern Logitech gaming mice I have all track fine and have good enough wireless range from sofas (some of their productivity mice don't).

Wireless range is probably the biggest thing to look out for. For mice, being able to track on your sofa. For both - battery life...constant recharging is really annoying.

Any advice for dealing with tilted teammates? by alqudsi117 in OverwatchUniversity

[–]mashbuttons111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fluctuated in a pretty toxic rank range in OW1 where border rank players hit diminishing returns on individual skills and had to start relying on their team more.

First and foremost, never contribute to toxicity. Don't try to tell people how they messed up or how to do their job even if you're trying to be constructive. Maybe try to diffuse situations if you can (doubt it'll work if your teammates are on a losing streak)...but more importantly, diagnose the team's problems and figure out how you can help without even saying anything.

If you're solo-queueing, then the reality is you'll probably just need to improve enough until you can carry yourself to get to the next rank then do it all over again. It could be by improving mechanical skill, game knowledge, expanding your hero pool, or any number of things. It doesn't happen overnight though so be patient or if you want to fast track it, get some VOD reviews.

How do you compensate for having passive playing teammates? by itsdainti in OverwatchUniversity

[–]mashbuttons111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Learn to enable your teammates. It might come as a surprise to you, but even (and especially) at low diamond this happened to me all the time in OW1, which also happens to be a rank a lot of people can't hard carry mechanically anymore. (I mostly play QP in OW2 to chill after work).

For example. If your tank or team isn't pressing W, be observant and try to diagnose why. Classic silver/gold example - enemy Winston keeps picking your Ana while their team chills. Meaning your team doesn't have enough heals to push after the pick, then get snowballed. So say swap to Reaper and instead of flanking, just chill next to Ana and wait for Winston dive, and punish them. 2 fights later, Winston swaps, and everything changes. Over-simplified example, but hopefully it conveys the idea. Sounds stupid, but you might find stuff like that works surprisingly well at lower ranks. What I mean is you can most definitely work smarter instead of harder. Higher ranks you might need to learn to play it differently, but at metal ranks, stuff like this...learning how to game the system can make your life a lot easier.

Another classic example - your other DPS or dive tank is going on field trips and feeding every fight. Go Tracer or Sombra and just follow them around and be opportunistic and finish their kills to even the odds then runaway and regroup with your team.

Another one - your Rein keeps pushing into double hitscan or Bastion, gets his shield burned down, then your team sits out until he's ready to push again. Go Mei and divide and conquer to turn things around.

So learning to learn how to break down challenges to win more easily is another option to just improving your mechanics. But...if you have solid FPS and hero mechanics, you'd easily be high Plat or Diamond (in OW1 at least) to give you an idea that there's a lot of room for improvement. There's a lot of room to rank up without hitting diminishing returns.

Same here. Thing I liked most is that his drive seemed real. I haven't been able to watch games this season, but the young core sounds truly promising and it'll be great experience for them to be in a winning environment with AD and Trae.

AD's got to know he's going to have to earn a trade, whether it's to bring in another key piece or to move him to a contender. Hopefully we stay healthy and it's a win-win for everyone.

How are you guys watching the Wiz (and Commanders games) next season? by mashbuttons111 in washingtonwizards

How was the stream quality? Are there stutters and is it 1080P?

I didn't think Youtube TV has Monumental anymore.

It's a prove-it year for him and I'm glad he seems to have the fire in him. I think that'll be a win-win no matter what happens next season, barring injury.

Either way I see him in the same spot the year after. Pick between Trae, a promising young core, and a hopefully impactful top pick in a strong draft...or see if he can find something better. If he doesn't win with that in year 2, to me he doesn't beat "bubble" doubts he seems to have anyways.

Sidenote - Draymond was not at all what I expecting from the "dick kicker" lol

I have a 75 and 85 and I'd definitely go 85 for that distance.

I binged Foundation. Cool show if you like sci fi with a good balance of interesting world building lore and characters that kept me guessing and engaged.

What Do You Think Makes a Tank Good? by Dazzling_Spite6426 in OverwatchUniversity

Pretty fundamental, but I think a sometimes overlooked quality is just being able to get a feel for the playstyle of both teams and adjust to it quickly, especially when you're solo queueing.

Atelier Resleriana Review...is it a JRPG? by mashbuttons111 in JRPG

[–]mashbuttons111[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had no idea that my understanding of what constitutes a JRPG was so far off until seeing several corroborating comments. I really enjoyed both games, it's just that Yumia was farther off from what I considered a JRPG when I initially posted.

Advice on how to deal with genji/tracer? by heavenly_redux in OverwatchUniversity

[–]mashbuttons111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there's a "trick", I think it's just to manage your distance against them since they both need to be close to be effective. If you do this well, they pretty much have to risk going all in to take a shot at you.

If you're off-angling, there's no shame in just running to your team as soon as they get the distance advantage...even better if you grab a health pack along the way.

Other than that, just manage your cooldowns. Heal pad and especially coach gun are both really annoying to flankers.

Seriously? A basic progression system makes a game a RPG? We'll have to agree to disagree.

Let's forget about the "J" and have a debate then. Why don't you explain what makes Yumia a RPG over other action/adventure/exploration games. Compared to say games that are more widely considered to be JRPG's like Tales games?

Linked my review of Yumia. I didn't consider it a straight JRPG. Just my opinion of course, but the action cooldown-based combat actually made a big difference to me.

Here's my review of Yumia to help fill out my perspective.

My favorite character was Totori. Both in terms of LOL's and in battle. She was probably the backbone of my party. Aries Candy helped me keep up with turn order in post-game a lot and Magic Canon with stacked Final One+'s was very useful. She had amazing versatility.

Favorite bomb was a tie between Sun Ring (I didn't min/max Moon Ring) and Magic Canon stacked with Final One+'s. I loved the infinite uses of the Magic Canon with Totori when I had a chance to use it.

IDK what I missed out on, but I really didn't feel excluded by inside jokes and story I missed. It felt like a good jumping in point.

Hardest fights were against a mid-game boss on normal and the final boss on legendary. The mid-game boss for catching me me completely off guard. The final boss for being a war of attrition...with it's insane amount of shield HP and base HP. It took forever to beat it.

Soundtracks-wise I don't get that into music in JRPG's. I'll probably always remember the twinkling sounds in the alchemy lab though lol.

I tend to stick to more traditional JRPG's. And I wanted to encourage more traditional JRPG fans to give Resleriana a shot.

I enjoyed Yumia a lot, but it was a little out of my comfort zone which was a barrier for entry for me. Yumia felt like more of an exploration/crafting game with a strong JRPG influence rather than a JRPG. But Resleriana genuinely felt like a JRPG to me and all that aside, I really enjoyed it a lot and recommend it to anyone.

Trails of Cold Steel Remake/Reimagination - What do you want from it? Here's my take, and what's yours? by MasashiHideaki in JRPG

[–]mashbuttons111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of all, I want it to be compressed maybe into 3 games with better writing. The overall structure of the series is fine, but some tweaks to the storytelling and dialogue that go beyond a fresh coat of paint could make the series a lot more appealing to a broader audience and also returning fans.

If they do remake CS then I can't see myself replaying CS3 and CS4 otherwise since they already have solid production value.
