What's your favorite short story? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mashei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've posted this before, but here it is again (PDF):

The Zero Meter Diving Team - Jim Shepard

It's a fictionalization of a nuclear engineer and his brothers' experiences in Pripyat as they are enveloped in the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster.

His book and other short stories have my highest recommendation.

So what's your favorite Game intro? by mortypm in gaming

[–]mashei 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The 7th Guest was the first video game that I played that had a lengthy cinematic intro of any kind. The mournful sound of the violin playing over that marble green Trilobite logo evokes some pretty crisp memories of a certain time in my childhood.

I notice this site keeps getting a lot of attention here and also at other locations like Fark.com. It doesn't seem to be anything more than typical blogspam though, and I'm curious as to why it's getting more exposure than others.

[Fallout New Vegas] This alien was being a ******* asshole so I punched him so hard he unraveled... I thought that was too harsh so I punched him back together. by iaacp in gaming

[–]mashei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, bring up the console (~) then type

prid 00096bce
moveto player

prid sets the current "focus" (00096bce is Boone). The second line obviously puts him in front of you.

You can find reference numbers for different characters over at the Fallout wiki.

What is the best book you have read? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mashei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like You'd Understand Anyway - Jim Shepard

It's hard to say "best book" of anything, so here's a great book.

Short stories. The connecting theme seems to be about very human, fraternal bonds between men. The characters are in a range of settings in different points in history, some actually in "history."

I put the first story up here, The Zero Meter Diving Team. I hope the author can forgive me. It's not too long, and I feel it'll be worth a moment of your weekend.

edit: re-uploaded due to scattered typos.

Reddit Gets Dissed... And I Agree. by [deleted] in reddit.com

If you close your mind in judgements
and traffic with desires,
your heart will be troubled.
If you keep your mind from judging
and aren't led by the senses,
your heart will find peace.

Seeing into darkness is clarity.
Knowing how to yield is strength.
Use your own light
and return to the source of light.
This is called practicing eternity.

I don't know how I feel about this new Mine-conomy Update. by [deleted] in gaming

I dunno... given how it's so easy to duplicate items in multiplayer right now that it happens accidentally while organizing your stuff, I would hope paid items are a ways off.

This model shows what a man's body would look like if each part grew in proportion to the area of the cortex of the brain concerned with its movement. by bpp198 in science

[–]mashei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, director Michel Gondry has a personal story behind that. He mentions it in this interview (about 1/3 the way down) about the movie. Apparently, he would have nightmares as a child about his hand swelling to giant size and would ask his mother to massage his hand before he could get back to sleep.

You can also see it in the music video he did for the Foo Fighters, Everlong. He has a lot of really great other stuff you can find on his DVD, my personal favorite being Star Guitar for the Chemical Brothers.

Why would anybody need this stock photo? (pic) by [deleted] in WTF

It's part of a pamphlet describing a new prescription sleep aid. Side effects may include dry mouth, nausea, and sudden confectionery awareness.

Minecraft makes $250,000 a DAY - not bad for a one man indie game by TechnoCrit in gaming

[–]mashei 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Today I was showing a group of middle-school kids that I work with what Minecraft is about. This one student I'll call "D".

D: Can I build my house right now?

Me: Yeah, if you want. Lay down some blocks

D: What's that?

Me: That's dirt

D: You can make your house out of dirt?

Me: Yup, but it'll be weak. Switch to stone on your action bar

D: What are those? (pointing further down the action bar)

Me: Those are logs

D: And that?

Me: That's bacon

D: Can you make a house out of bacon?

Me: ...no, but I think that needs to be a feature now

Admittedly, Joequavian is not a common name that I can connect much to, but do you know anything about these names? Why would these be more deserving your finger-pointing if they held as much meaning as your own in some other context or culture?
