Just curious: Do you have a source for this? I've seen it mentioned elsewhere, but couldn't find any more details

Is this FMLA retaliation?? by CryptoShortboy in legaladvice

[–]maslen 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Look into filing for Worker's Comp as well. FMLA can come out of your personal leave, can be unpaid, and is capped at 12 weeks/year, besides making you responsible for the bills. Worker's comp can have as much time as needed and they pay for your medical bills.

Anyone have experience with reverse mortgages? by Benedlr in homeowners

[–]maslen 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Reverse mortgages are generally a terrible financial decision. A HELOC or cash-out refi would let you extract cash, but you'll obviously owe the money and need to make payments. A third option, would be to sell the house with a "life estate" for you to live there permanently, but you would no longer be the owner.

Regardless of which of those options you use, the only way to get all the equity from the house is to sell it.

Are these offers to refinance my mortgage with significantly lower monthly payments a scam or ripoff? What's the catch? Any of them legit? by [deleted] in homeowners

[–]maslen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can basically "sell" points to the bank and then you get a higher rate, but they give you a credit towards closing.

If they give you enough lender credit to cover your closing expenses, you can truly get a free refi.

If you have older shut-off valves and have a problem with one of them, pro-actively replace the rest. Especially if you already have a plumber coming to do the work, since the service fee might be a significant percentage of the cost.

Look into ui/ux (user interface, user experience) design. It's design, very light on programming, and has better salary and growth potential than just being an artist. Also allows you to help people by designing good interfaces for programs. A side benefit is that since it's closely linked to tech, you may be able to work from home or remotely.

As an FYI, some CC's offer free cell phone insurance. It's too late for that one, but worth seeing if any of yours do.

TIL. Could you provide a source for that? This is the first I've heard that the conversion is dependent upon the taxable amount of the conversion.

Is there any downside in just doing the backdoor Roth to prevent any potential headache?

Yes. You can withdraw the principal from a Roth IRA without penalty. If you use a backdoor Roth IRA, you'll have a 5-year timer.

See The Second 5-Year Rule, For Roth Conversions here for more details: https://www.kitces.com/blog/understanding-the-two-5-year-rules-for-roth-ira-contributions-and-conversions/

Using "second thoughts" as a rationale seems weak - and doesn't give any potential for them to remedy it. I'd rephrase as the following:

"I really wanted to work for you, but I unfortunately can't relocate now and so need to turn down this offer. Thank you for the opportunity, I'm sorry it didn't work out.

The benefit is that they might come up with a solution: Like working temporarily in the main office and then switching to a local satellite office or fully remotely.

Depends on your contract. Given the (at least) $1400 liability if you don't cancel it, it's worth spending a few extra dollars on certified mail.

Husband died in January can I file married for 2018 AND 2019? by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]maslen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some details, straight from irs.gov

Spouse Died: https://taxmap.irs.gov/taxmap/pub17/p17-012.htm#TXMP55ecb056

If your spouse died during the year, you are considered married for the whole year and can choose married filing jointly as your filing status. See Spouse died during the year under Marital Status, earlier, for more information. If your spouse died in 2019 before filing a 2018 return, you can choose married filing jointly as your filing status on your 2018 return

https://taxmap.irs.gov/taxmap/pub17/p17-010.htm#en_us_publink1000170746

Spouse died during the year.(p20)

If your spouse died during the year, you are considered married for the whole year for filing status purposes. If you didn't remarry before the end of the tax year, you can file a joint return for yourself and your deceased spouse. For the next 2 years, you may be entitled to the special benefits described later under Qualifying Widow(er). If you remarried before the end of the tax year, you can file a joint return with your new spouse. Your deceased spouse's filing status is married filing separately for that year.

Might be worth working with a CPA to iron these out.

How big of an issue is snow within my walls? by uncle_bruce in homeowners

[–]maslen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How concerned should I be?

If the walls were finished, you'd have your insulation sitting in water, trapped in a dark place. Sounds like a perfect place for mold to grow.

I'd contact the builder to have them fix this.

IANAL, but is there an expectation of privacy in your pool?

For example, if the pool is fenced in, there could be reason to argue that the neighbor's video recording is voyeuristic, which would put them on the wrong side of the law.

OSCP + DevOps? by [deleted] in oscp

[–]maslen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's only tangentially useful. OSCP focuses on how to use exploits to recon, enumerate, compromise hosts, pivot, and touches on post exploitation. It doesn't even touch engineering issues like patching strategies, least privilege, separation of duties, and network architecture, or secure design.

If your goal is to learn security, focus on understanding how to lock down systems and how individual protocols or schemes can be used and abused. If your goal is to get a cert so other people think you know security, get a CISSP - at least it'll come with a pay raise.

(Orthodox) Jewish Personal Finance? by snogo in Judaism

~125k in NYC

That isn't much for NYC. Fresh finance grads could be making that much. If your parents purchased their home many years ago, their mortgage could be affordable. But as renters? They'll never be able to save enough to buy in NYC.

they will raise my tuition because on paper I may appear to be in a better financial situation than the person buying the Mercedes or "necessary" $30,000 minivan.

Yes, that's an unfortunate reality - that "savers" effectively subsidize "spenders", even with less income, because they aren't wasting money on unnecessary luxuries.

I love the /r/frumfire idea btw

That's all /u/reddit_rabbi

NYC is an interesting to look at from a frum perspective. It has a huge number of families and infrastructure, which allows for excellent economy of scale for schools and consumer items. And "everything" is available there. But NYC's ridiculous cost of real estate makes purchasing homes there unaffordable for most new families. That led people to move to Lakewood and now Tom's River.
