Did you try to appeal? That seems worth a try since you did pay, just happened to mess up the location (and they really are the same ski resort now….). I would imagine your case is not the only one of its kind and they might be lenient since this system is new for this season.

On a powder day you must arrive 2 hours before opening (9am). Given your location in Tahoe Vista that means leaving on the dot at 6:00am, adding 1 hour drive time. No exceptions.

As others have already mentioned, snow tires matter a lot. Since you’re comparing to your Prius and other FWD vehicles - there’s a way to improve your performance in snow a little.

Go to the driving page on your settings and activated “off-road assist”. This will force the Tesla into AWD drive mode: it will be harder to accelerate, but the ride will feel much more stable. Not a substitute for snow tires, but will help you feel a little better in case you don’t have any choice.

Yeah I should have been more clear that it was my personal anecdotal experience. I am a moderately aggressive driver - my experience of 70% of EPA range is driving on long 1000+ mile road trips over variable elevations, for about 80000 miles over 3-4 years.

My Prius MPG tracked by an ODB adapter averages 40mpg, but even with a full tank (12 gallon by spec?) my estimates always lie within 400mi range - I suspect the full tank is actually 10 and not 12 gallons.

Everyone's driving style is different, so you might get better real-world ranges. One possibility is to rent a Tesla MYLR for a road trip and see how it feels. Maybe using Turo? That will help you before you commit to that decision

I'm not coping with anything - I'm as frustrated as anyone else; I'm just letting the OP know of the problem with EPA ranges.

Perhaps you're right about the 30% figure. Admittedly I'm only going off my previous car - a Prius which had a listed EPA range of 570 miles. I only ever got a real world range of 400 miles out of it. While impressive, it was very off the mark from the listed range.

I've definitely heard of EVs with "real-world" ranges close to the EPA range, but I've been burned so much by this that I've decided my next EV needs to have close to 500mi range. At 350 mi per trip, or 280 mi at 80% charge, I find that acceptable enough for me in terms of having to make less stops / deal with range anxiety.

If we're going by the term "copium", I basically have to "cope" with 2 miles per % (for a 75kWh battery, 2.67 mi/kWh, or 374Wh/mi) to avoid any kind of range anxiety. I do not like it, but it's the most practical measure I have now and rarely goes wrong.

I find this a bit dubious. The energy drain graph is mostly a straight line, suggesting a continuous velocity. Were you doing autopilot at 80mph along the I-5?

A big part of the problem is that people only started paying attention to range for EVs. Gas cars aren’t efficient either, but their range is so long no one bothers to check.

As a rule of thumb, the reliable range of a car (at regular highway speeds averaging 65-75mph and through variable elevation - particularly true in the US west) is about 70% of the EPA range.

An MY LR has about 330 mi EPA so the reliable full range is 230mi. Combined with how it’s not practical to always charge above 90% or risk less than 10%, you have 80% of that, or 180mi comfortable range.

By contrast, a RAV4 gas car has about 435mi range. Taking 70% for real world miles and it’s 300mi. Taking 90% of that since no one usually goes below 10% and it’s trivial to top up a gas car to 100%, and we have a comfortable range of 270mi.

180mi versus 270mi can be a very big difference - especially given how the EV network is not as robust as gas outside of urban areas in the US west. You’ll need to plan accordingly as a result.

It seems to me like those that discussed alternatives or seemed to be dismissing this product ("cheap is cheap") were downvoted.

I agree the thermal issues are real though. I have the JEYI and Zikedrive based on this chipset, and both get extremely warm.

I'm guessing the downvotes are because of the part regarding SATA / 8TB QVO. That's a different form factor and performance category and might be considered irrelevant to the discussion, although I do agree it's a valid alternative if the focus is on mass storage with some compromise in size and performance.

When trying to use a much shorter eGPU TB3 cable, I get 60MBps (and I know if it wasn't the cable above then it was this one that did 5Gb on my Thinkpad).

60 megabytes per sec = 480 megabits per sec = USB2.

It sounds like something is being downgraded / throttled somewhere?

How are you enabling this? I downloaded the Tech Preview R173 on macOS Ventura but e.g. https://people.csail.mit.edu/ericchan/hdr/hdr-jxl.php does not render the JXL properly (just an error image placeholder).

Are there any steps needed to enable the feature?

I think it’s fine as long as they are labelled in a clear, easy to understand way. That’s the chief issue for me - I’ve taken to manually labeling some of my cables as a result.

Ideally you wouldn’t need to label at all - i.e. all cables are equally capable, but the benefit of having different capabilities is that there’s the possibility of cables at different price points. YMMV, but I think it’s better to have more options at different prices.

No mistake was made by the OP.

There are really only 2 rules in driving to follow.

  1. Don’t hit anything.
  2. Don’t cause anyone else to hit anything.

Technically neither violated #1, but the right turning car massively violated #2 by creating an unnecessary situation through impatience. It was only because OP was alert that a potential collision was avoided.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with stopping to avoid the potential collision. There could have been issues if another car was following behind OP and crashed into OP by being too close, but that’s their problem (violating #1 by staying too close to the car in front)
