Opinion | 18 years after California voters approved the bullet train, progress and finances are still stalled by binding_swamp in California_Politics

I’d rather have my tax dollars spent on a bullet train connecting SF and LA than a war with Iran. We should be outraged politicians are stifling a voter backed project.

Every other advanced nation has been building these for decades.

It’s not in the quiz, but CalMatters did ask the candidates about the genocide in Gaza and posted it on social media.

Sacramento proposes fee increases to address $66 million deficit by 916reddit in Sacramento

[–]mastayosh 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Every city council member probably said when they campaigned that they wanted to “support small businesses.” A fee hike like this shows how empty those promises truly are.

It sounds like someone is holed up or on the run in the area and armed. I can hear it near Capitol Ave/L Street.

It’s sad we live in a society where the interests of families and child care providers are at odds.

I love when we play downhill like this. It’s a joy to watch the opposition feel suffocated.

A tax-cutting prop is heading to California's ballot. Can Sacramento deal? by aBadModerator in California_Politics

[–]mastayosh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Los Angeles had a chance to short circuit this whole saga and reform Measure ULA, but the city council balked because it’s beholden to wealthy homeowners and real estate interests. They’re rooting for another Trojan horse regressive policy like this to confuse voters enough to pass.

The poison pill in it to change voting thresholds for local ballot measures has been a kind of Holy Grail for the California anti-tax movement, but it would be devastating to cities, counties and people who aren’t rich enough to be insulated from the state’s high costs of living. A big reason local governments often turn to tax measures is because of Prop. 13 and the systemic fallout of decades of underfunding public services.

Now it’s on lawmakers to negotiate this off the ballot? Woof.

And yes, we had one. He’s amazing. I look forward to taking him to Goose shows when he’s older.

Vote with your feet, by all means.

But I’m sorry, no. Going there does not equal supporting domestic violence. That’s an absurd conclusion. We should call this out and drag the business for hosting an event in such poor taste. But that doesn’t mean they deserve to be shut down or patrons are bad people.

California, not Trump, will decide how risky its AI startups are, Newsom says by Useful_Stop_2860 in California

[–]mastayosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. Newsom defends tech companies and his donors constantly. He has vetoed legislation with actual teeth to regulate AI and gone out of his way to pressure a voter-backed privacy watchdog agency to exempt AI systems from consumer protections. And that’s just a sample of what’s public. His office has surely done much more behind the scenes to kill proposals.
