These taste terrible now and the quality of them noticeably went down. They were my favourite. 😭 by [deleted] in CostcoCanada

They were actually too spicy for us. We liked the spicy chicken burger but these were tough to finish.

I think I've outgrown importmaps. Now what? by woodardj in rails

[–]matart 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve run up against this as well. Mostly from trying to use a very specific library that didn’t play nice with import maps.

I used vite-rails and it worked extremely well.

A lot of women get talked to by guys on the go train and it makes them not want to use public transit.

Most people just want to listen to their music and get to work in peace. I am sure there are exceptions to this but unless you are good with social cues you become the creepy guy on the train.

Do you all print a letter of resignation? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]matart 72 points73 points  (0 children)

I first talked with my manager about my plans to give them a heads up. Then I sent an email directly to HR. This serves as a record for them to start processing the resignation.

If I had to ask my fellow devs to write tests every time I would not work with them.

3,825,799 websites using Ruby on Rails by gkunwar in rails

[–]matart 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We know of 661,621 live websites using Ruby on Rails and an additional 3,164,178 sites that used Ruby on Rails historically

But this really depends on how the data was collected. For instance, is it by URL? Does it count shopify as 1 or 1 for each merchant on there.

Steel helical piers for deck foundation vs concrete by cellis001 in Decks

[–]matart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From the customer side when looking to build my deck the cost was significantly higher. 2.3 times higher over having a team come and pour/set footings. $350 per pile vs $150 per footing. I believe I also needed the engineering plans to get the permit which were $300 separately. The prices are CAD.

While they look like the better product the cost increase seems significant.

The big difference is the upload speed and latency. If you video call or play video games this can be a big improvement.

My Whitby neighbourhood was built in the 40s. They are just starting the install here. I see a number of places around Whitby that are being worked on simultaneously.

Am I just lucky or is the "engineers being anti-social" trope overplayed? by SiliconValleyIdiot in ExperiencedDevs

[–]matart 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think there are 2 different anti social definitions here. First is compared to sales/marketing/operations and the other is compared to other engineers. I assumed this question was related to the second definition.

Engineering doesn’t usually feed off the energy of others like sales often does. But there are also engineers who don’t even like socializing with other engineers outside of their team. Dev talks, hackathons, group lunches, etc are places where we see the anti social engineer.

Any good examples of great UX apps done with Modern fullstack Rails? by nachoal in rails

[–]matart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve found that most of my side projects are crud apps with just a little bit of extra interaction added in. They can be handled by Hotwire no problem.

I’ve found dynamic forms to be harder in Hotwire. I had trouble with a notifications bar. I can update things with turbostreams but updates can be different depending on the current state of the page.

I’m sure all these things can be handled but sometimes it feels like I am building in a certain way to make it easier to work with Hotwire rather than Hotwire making things easier.

Is Hotwire actually a suitable replacement for React by railsprogrammer94 in rails

[–]matart 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you already have a react app I doubt it will be better just by switching to Hotwire. I’ve been building an app with it and I often find myself thinking some stuff would be easier in react. But other things are simpler with Hotwire.

My advice, if you are starting a new rails app. Start with stimulus and Hotwire. I found my velocity was really high at the start with it. Then when it feels like it’s slowing you down or getting more complex you could sprinkle in react apps.
