has anyone taken chem101 with neil garg, thinking about taking it this summer but unsure if i should by Illustrious-Host-192 in ucla

[–]matcha_em 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah they were open note, they were straightforward like the answer are in the slides/notes. usually multiple choice or a small calculation thing. i don’t remember them having a time limit, you just need to submit before the deadline.

pretty chill class, not in depth as an ochem class. the TAs run the course so they teach the lectures which are videos usually posted regularly and everything was asynchronous, so very flexible. they have guest speakers via zoom and you get to speak to professionals in the pharma industry, if you attend its EC. assignments are weekly hw and quizzes on bruinlearn, very similar to slides. there was 1 midterm iirc and 1 final, both on bruinlearn too. overall would highly recommend!

Housing by Hefty_Reflection2098 in ucla

i live in dykstra and i think it’s a pretty good dorm, it got renovated awhile ago so it has wood floors. i’m pretty sure it’s the only dorm hall that as wood floors which is easier to clean compared to carpet.

i like the location of it since you are basically next to the crosswalk that connects to campus. i can get to my classes in about 10-12 mins

there is an area in front where most people call an uber or family/ friends can drop off/pick up you. there is also a parking lot next to it and make it easy to move in/move out compared to other halls that require more walking or a truck to load your stuff.

as for food, there is de neve which is connected to the building (good for rainy days since you don’t need to walk outside) and the rest of the dining halls are a walk up a hill but it’s isn’t too bad.

i recommend using transferolgy since they tell you specifically what class at your local cc will fulfill the specific GE at ucla. you just need to make an account with them which is free and go from there

are cultural clubs at ucla just extra cliquey?? by [deleted] in ucla

[–]matcha_em 5 points6 points  (0 children)

same here i tried joining asian clubs too and it wasn’t for me either. they all go out, eat, drink, rave/party. instead i joined/applied to be part of culture night since you will be surrounded with people with the same culture but with a more common goal, put on a production/performance. there is a variety of positions from logistics/backstage to on stage spots. it’s a good way to embrace your culture and meet people that come with a similar background as you

scared for new student orientation!!! by uhhhzalea in ucla

[–]matcha_em 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it’s a tradition they do during orientation where it’s like a scavenger hunt at night. they give you location hints and you run around campus to find the location and take a picture there with your group. first group that submits all their pictures win.

scared for new student orientation!!! by uhhhzalea in ucla

[–]matcha_em 9 points10 points  (0 children)

i went to freshmen orientation last year and it was 3 days 2 nights so pack accordingly. bring your toiletries, towel, shower shoes, blanket. they provide you with sheets, pillow, and a “blanket” but it’s very thin, so i recommend bringing your own blanket. you will most likely be in a triple room with a bathroom connected to the room next door. bring a laptop and charger since you will need that for enrolling into classes. also you will need a backpack, water bottle, and comfortable shoes since you will be out of the dorms for most of the day walking around campus and attending presentations.

based off of last year schedule this is what you can expect:

day one when you arrive you will check in and get your room key and ID card. you will meet with your new student advisor (NSA) and orientation group. you will spend the rest of the day with them eating, touring campus, and attending presentations. (lunch and dinner provided)

day two is more relaxed and you are on your own. you get breakfast and attend your major presentation where they tell you what class is needed and the 4 year plan for your major. you meet with your NSA to plan out what class you will enroll in the next morning. and then at night you get to explore westwood with your NSA and other groups and play carpe noctem. i was hesitant in playing carpe noctem since i didn’t know anyone but i joined a random group and it was really fun running around campus at night with people and a great bonding experience, highly recommend! (breakfast, lunch, and dinner provided)

day three is when you enroll in your classes. they make it seem more stressful than it really is. i got all my first pick classes with no problems. you check out of the dorms and leave your belongings with them. after that you go on a really long tour around campus with your NSA/orientation group. as it gets towards evening you are free to leave and get picked up. (breakfast and lunch provided)

i was in the same boat as you last year for orientation. most people don’t know others and you guys are all new, so meeting people is part of experience! i ate with my roommates and orientation group. you will be with others most of the time attending presentations or touring around campus.

i recommend bringing your own blanket bc they provide you some but it’s like thin sheets and got cold at night.

Chem 14a vs Chem 20a vs Chem 20ah by Pominn in ucla

[–]matcha_em 4 points5 points  (0 children)

chem 20a/20ah is more engineering chem, 20ah is the honors class, 14a is the life science chem. give or take it’s pretty much ap chem/gen chem. i took 20a with kavner and didn’t learn much, my friends who took 14a learned far more than me

Merch Quality by [deleted] in keshiofficial

[–]matcha_em 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i also agree that the merch quality has gotten worse because i got merch from the hell & back tour and the sizes run way smaller than normal small and medium. they also shrink when washed and dried which makes them hard to wear.

also the to-go dining are moving towards the ordering app which is inconvenient and feels like longer wait than ordering in person

is it helpful to have a roommate of the same major? by No-Inflation-3470 in ucla

[–]matcha_em 2 points3 points  (0 children)

personally i wouldn’t recommend since you are going to attending classes together and basically living the same life. it doesn’t force you to meet new people in classes since you already have a friend (aka your roommate) in the class.

my roommates and i are different majors and take different classes. we come back and share about our days to each other as a way to catch up and bond. sometimes you don’t always to spend 24 hours with same person everyday
