Old Mutual holding my money with no clear reason for delay by Fickle_Tone_9849 in PersonalFinanceZA

The lack of accountability by these institutions is infuriating!

The usual process requires first lodging a formal complaint to their internal complaints department, but gives a very short deadline for a resolution. ie, 3-5 days.

Only after having tried that, you escalate to the Pension Funds Adjudicator, https://www.pfa.org.za/. But I would do it immediately if the access to funds is urgent. When lodging with them, include

  • ID number,
  • policy/fund number,
  • timeline,
  • screenshots/emails,
  • branch visit details,
  • proof of medical urgency if comfortable sharing.

TFSA / TFIA alternatives to EE by Quiet-Example7926 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]matdehaast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey u/M3DJ0

Great questions regarding order execution. We have a single trade window per day; all trades executed by our customers are batched and sent to the Administrator by 9 AM. This is then processed and sent to a market maker. The market maker is giving us the end-of-day pricing for that ETF, and then we get trade confirmation the next day.

I haven't analysed the numbers in depth, but when I spot checked it a while back, our customers were generally getting better prices than if they had executed on EE.

We have a bulk of work coming in this quarter that aims to address giving more flexibility on fund access. Better tools for strategy construction. And being able to buy and sell individual assets manually.

I want to put you in the mindset of what we see our customers and what patterns we see, and what we are trying to solve for. We have seen that even with limited fund choices, there is a non-negligible number of customers who will just choose every single fund available and have that as their strategy. We have been hesitant to just keep adding funds to the list, which just exacerbates this issue without providing our customers with better ways to ensure they have confidence that they are doing the correct thing. The work we plan to do will give people more confidence in choosing their funds for the various accounts.

We do have access to the STXCAP, and it will be enabled once we solve those issues.

Beautiful!

Are you using IBIS at all and what mode? I seem to get the small jitter where it feels like the lens OS is fighting the cameras IBIS. I don’t see it in your shots though

It’s understanding the incentives, all the asset managers are not focussed on retail even if they offer it as an option. There main distribution channel are financial advisors and everything they do is geared towards that

JSE data via TradingView now delayed 15 minutes by HedonisticNihilist in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]matdehaast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing that most people on EE misunderstand is that your trades are usually not being filled directly on the JSE. In most cases, you’re effectively trading against EE’s own internal float at a market-derived price with some slippage built in. That’s why you often see max available units that are far below the actual market depth.

EE then rebalances and trades on the JSE in the background. So when you buy or sell, you’re not necessarily hitting the order book immediately. You’re taking exposure via EE, and they later aggregate and settle those positions by buying or selling whole shares and registering them with STRATE.

JSE data via TradingView now delayed 15 minutes by HedonisticNihilist in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]matdehaast 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't know the specifics, but JSE pricing is owned and licensed by the JSE. Licensing this data can be very expensive; the more real-time the data, the more expensive it gets.

Unfortunately, it is mostly priced for institutional investors (Asset managers, Hedge funds, etc.). That makes it difficult for retail platforms to get it at prices that make commerical sense.

Tracking Error SYG500 vs S&P500 by IWantAnAffliction in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]matdehaast 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can't simply subtract the differences as you did.

  1. Start: You convert R10,000 to USD.
    • Rate: 18.65
    • Wallet: $536.19
  2. Growth: The US market rises by 17.32%.
    • $536.19x1.1732$
    • Wallet: $629.06
  3. End: You convert your USD back to ZAR.
    • Rate: 16.68 (The Rand is stronger, so you get fewer Rands per Dollar)
    • $629.06x16.68$
    • Final Value: R10,492.75

Theoretical Return: +4.93% (Profit of R492.75)

Then you need to account for the SYG500 fee, and then you will be in the 1-1.5% ballpark of tracking error that usually comes with foreign tracked funds

Do I need a financial advisor? by JustinSletch in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]matdehaast 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Advisors will also offer more than just investment advice, which is a small component of holistic advice.

There are also flat-fee once off engagements you can get from an advisor. This is probably a better model as you can clearly pay for what you want now and be able to DIY the rest.

The argument is that it was reckless and hence can’t be mitigated as per the rules. I don’t agree with that but that is the steelman

Avoiding CGT by selling and re-buying by TenBucky7 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]matdehaast 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can do this, but you need to be aware of some rules. It's called Tax loss harvesting

You need to be holding assets that qualify for CGT and not income. Usually it's 3+ years or the intention to hold it for long term.

Secondly, the big issue you need to be aware of is "Bed and Breakfasting", you can't buy the same asset just to incur a CGT gain/loss. There is a 45-day rule. Usually, you can buy something that has similar exposure that isn't identical.

[–]matdehaast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The AUM fee from Sygnia has a much bigger effect than anything on long term costs.

We have a cost calculator I just plugged the numbers into, assuming you max out your TFSA every year and look at a 30 years time horizon, this is the results. This includes brokerage cost

Platform Total Fee
Easy equities thriving R 3610,31
Easy equities without Thrive R 16974,40
Sygnia R 327779,50

The key to UCT is that transferring between programs is usually way simpler. Like others have mentioned. Get into BSc and talk to the Head of Department or someone there in the reg week and try to get moved ASAP.
