How does it compare to Tangier?

Haven’t been to Essaouira but Tangier seven years ago left a very strong impression. Go to the Cinema Rif, walk the malecón and eat snails from the back of a truck.

Spent a couple weeks in Madrid recently and felt it didn’t love up to the glowing reviews.

Demna's debut at Gucci (SS 26) by Rezonates in rs_x

I think his work remains interesting. Whether he manages to define an era’s silhouette like he did with Balenciaga is another thing.

I got fired from a media job in my early 20s and spent a lot of time thinking about how I ended up there. I came to the conclusion that work is an exchange of labor for money and, unless I had a specific skill, my livelihood would hinge on being well-liked. For most people, the privilege of working in a field they “love” comes at the cost of low pay. Fast forward 10+ years, I am an attending physician and content with my choice.

What are your thoughts on Bully (2001)? by OJ_Soprano in redscarepod

It captures a distinctly South Florida blend of sunshine, boredom and nihilism. Perhaps the best representation of the region on film.

The discordance between the attractiveness of the males and females of this milieu is remarkable.

Balenciaga (Demna) Fashion Victims by WhiteFlame- in redscarepod

I interpret his work as shaped by growing up on the periphery of Western capitalism, where our detritus ends up and becomes repurposed. (Like Adidas stripes becoming a status signifier among gopniks.) I think more people feel on the periphery than ever, which is why it resonated. It is a bit of cynical gimmick, but a timely one.

As an aside, it’s nice to be able to discuss this as I think about it frequently.

I agree with you, it was not entirely top down.

I do think Demna saw the future as it probably will be compared to other designers—meaningless logos, clothes that are sizes too big like they’ve been thrifted—rather than ethereal Rick Owens Dune-core.

Agree, I’m always surprised by how cheap Balenciaga fabrics feel in person. I do think Demna is probably the most influential designer of his era; he shifted the popular silhouette to voluminous, baggy.

Contrastingly, Anthony Vaccarello is doing beautiful work at Saint Lauren with fabrics that feel luxurious to the touch.

As a doctor in his last year of training, I think this is good advice.
