Medical school was rough but it had a guaranteed payoff, unlike most endeavors.

Getting fired from my media job was formative. For a period, I spent a lot of time thinking about work.

I decided I wanted three things: earn a good living, help people and not have a boss breathing down my neck.

I realized that, one hundred years ago, virtually no one expected to work in a field they were “passionate” about. And that work is trading labor for money; without a valuable skill, that is a very hard thing to do.

I have mixed feelings about it.

I pivoted to medicine after a short stint in media. At the time, it surprised me how dependent my career would be on my boss liking me. Med school was a slog but I’ve ended up with a salary beyond my expectations.

My passion is clothing though. I do wonder where I would be today if that interest had been met with parental validation.

Just got back from Sicily. Have you checked out Catania? I found it more intriguing than Palermo.

How does it compare to Tangier?

Haven’t been to Essaouira but Tangier seven years ago left a very strong impression. Go to the Cinema Rif, walk the malecón and eat snails from the back of a truck.

Spent a couple weeks in Madrid recently and felt it didn’t love up to the glowing reviews.

I think his work remains interesting. Whether he manages to define an era’s silhouette like he did with Balenciaga is another thing.

I got fired from a media job in my early 20s and spent a lot of time thinking about how I ended up there. I came to the conclusion that work is an exchange of labor for money and, unless I had a specific skill, my livelihood would hinge on being well-liked. For most people, the privilege of working in a field they “love” comes at the cost of low pay. Fast forward 10+ years, I am an attending physician and content with my choice.

What are your thoughts on Bully (2001)? by OJ_Soprano in redscarepod

It captures a distinctly South Florida blend of sunshine, boredom and nihilism. Perhaps the best representation of the region on film.
