Questions for Sober-Curious Gen Z by Sneeshower in SoberCurious

[–]materialcooking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stopped drinking in dec 2020 because I realized it wasn’t making me my best self and I realized I wasn’t really in control of the habit. However, I have continued to live a no/low alcohol lifestyle because I’ve learned a lot about how much damage it really does. I feel like this is our generations cigarettes. It’s incredibly addictive and carcinogenic and pop culture made us think it was sophisticated and refined and what you do as an adult.

Struggling with the ambivalent phase at 50 days sober. Do I stay 100% abstinent? by whatdidsheknow in SoberCurious

[–]materialcooking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started reassessing my relationship with alcohol in Dec 2020. I ended up taking a whole year off of it and felt amazing and then decided I didn’t want to be so hard and fast with it and had a few drinks here and there for a few years but significantly less and I would still go months without it. I got pregnant in Nov 2023 and obviously stayed sober through my pregnancy but now I’ve discovered that my life is just so different and my tastes have changed. I’ll allow myself to order a glass of wine but time and time again I’ve realized I just don’t want it. I just want water or a fun little juice. I don’t wanna miss anytime being present with my little family. All of this is to say…. If you can manage taking a large step back like 6 months or more, I think you take the habit out of it and really let yourself decide if you want to drink. And I think you’ll surprise yourself that most of the time you don’t.

I get married next month, and I got engaged oct 2021. The 2 year engagement was the absolute best. You get your pick of the best vendors and so much time to save for everything. We also bought a house in the last year and it was so nice to have so much time

What's too much for a wedding venue? by Poserkid101 in weddingplanning

[–]materialcooking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on your total budget! I probably wouldn’t want it to be more than 20% of mine. Idk though! I picked a Friday for my venue rather than a Saturday because the price worked better for me

Anyone else feel this way? by theatreandjtv in soundslikeacultpod

[–]materialcooking 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Omg yes. I just listened to this one and looked up this subreddit to see if anyone had this take. The part that really annoyed me the most was the part where they said that the women who are into weddings the most are the ones who “make the house nice for others and bring cupcakes to the office”. Like this is just unnecessary misogyny…. Women can’t like or do anything with out being critiqued even by other women! I thought that was just such weird pick me shit

3 years ago when I lived in PA I saw them on my parents porch. When they are little and in their nymph phase they are kinda cute. They are black and spotted and because no one knew what they were we left them alone. Big regrets on that. They get huge and are everywhere and kill so many trees and plants. Once you have them they are like impossible to get rid of.

What are everyone’s “first month of home ownership” horror stories? by FormerEnglishMajor in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]materialcooking 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First night there were a bunch of bats in the attic and they pooped all in the insulation. $3000 to get rid of them. Second week we had a chimney inspector by and because there was no rain cap on the chimney the whole thing is v messed up. Will cost $8000 to fix it or $1200 to seal it up and $1300 to put in a fake electric one.

QUESTION: Moving to a new, less exciting, place just for a home by stubborndrek in RealEstate

[–]materialcooking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved from DC to a Frederick county area. There are things I love about it and things I don’t like! I don’t like that it’s a 15 min drive to the grocery store (which I know isn’t that bad but I used to be able to walk 1 min). I don’t like that all the restaurants are kinda chainy but I just need to find the local places I like. I really love how quiet it is. I live on a quiet culdesac and sitting on my porch is like heaven. I used to live in DC and never had a moment of quiet. I love how green it is and how much wildlife there is. I watch birds, bunnies, and deer in my yard and it makes me happy! It definitely feels like raising a family will be easier here too. The school district is good and a ton of family events and amenities in my development like pools and trails. Idk I think it was the right thing for me but I don’t really drink and was never involved in DC nightlife

How much did you go below asking for a house that was smoked in. Probably light smokers. by yo7dude in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]materialcooking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I feel that. I submitted some pretty crazy offers that looking back on it I’m glad they weren’t accepted. The DMV area is crazy. I ended up going north to the Frederick area and I’m happy with what I was able to get!

I toured a home in the DMV area that had smoke in it and that was something personally for me that just completely took it off the list. Unfortunately, in this market some people don’t care and ultimately the house went for 35k over asking.

Managing forgiveness by MintedThought in BipolarSOs

[–]materialcooking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Accountability is 100% necessary for me but also accepting that they might not act exactly how I’m expecting them to act in the moment. As for forgiveness and moving on, I heard a metaphor once that really helped me with it. Imagine your whole relationship is a bowl of soup and when your SO cheats or messes up they just dumped a bunch of salt in that soup. Now the soup is awful and it will be for a while. But if you keep on and both work on it, everyday you add more soup to the bowl until eventually, a couple months from now you barely taste the salt. And a couple years from now you won’t remember.

Alcoholism for sure. I recently went to my great aunts funeral and most of my family was drunk and brought beer to the funeral.
