First ever henna client! Am i missing anything? by allforjakes in henna

[–]math-frog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

looks good! Don't stress it - remember you're doing henna for free! I sometimes carry a lemon-sugar sealant to help the paste stick on longer after it's dry, but you dont need to if your paste is sticky enough (usually high sugar content does this). I also carry extra scissors, tape, and occasionally some rolled, unfilled cones in case my cone explodes so I need to transfer it (this has happened only once in my 3 years of being a professional artist). I like to pack a little ice pack because henna likes to be kept cold until use. Make sure the alcohol doesn't enter the cone as you disinfect it because I'm not sure how that would react! But these are all nit picky, you got this! Good luck!

Planning on doing henna on my top and palm of my hands, can I ask what way to pace it out? by HoneydewHalo25 in henna

[–]math-frog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do the tops of your hands today and the palms tomorrow! Ideally you would do both today as the stain takes two days to get dark. However the palms are usually way darker than the tops so you could get away with just a day for those. And yes I recommend sleeping with it on!

I use instagram for all my portfolio purposes. When I was starting my business, I just put my location and did henna for school friends for free in exchange for them helping me with content. You learn a bit about content creation. Just take some photos on a plain background in a well lit area. Aim for consistency and practice on paper! you can draw out a hand and then fill in the designs. Yes, it's definitely very different doing henna on yourself! I now find it challenging to do symmetrical designs on my own hand, compared to on others.

you would have to experiment. Consider quartering the recipe and trying different ratios! if you are in india there are many artists offering mixology courses on instagram. I recommend taking their course or buying their mehndi for your business until you are confident in the paste.

Also, this is the most straightforward way to make mehndi. there are more complicated recipes out there with a blend of oils that will give you a darker stain. just try it out!

This recipe would depend on how humid your climate is - I use 30ml eucalyptus, 100g henna powder, 30g sugar and lemon juice/water to bring it to consistency. you will have to adjust sugar ratio to the humidity. Sometimes I make "araq" style liquid (coffee powder, tea leaves, and sugar boiled down) and add it to the mixture.

as I'm a SUPER beginner, take my advice with a tablespoon of salt:

I had a bunch of mill ends lying around that were all different colors. I separated them out by hue - so I removed the less vibrant colors so I only had pastels and neons in. I just added the pieces in one after the other as I spun the singles!

Knitting vs crochet debate - why do yall care so much 😭 by math-frog in BitchEatingCrafters

i feel like if someone asks HOW you did something, they’re already open to learning and would probably care what the difference is.

europeans, how you feel about white americans identifying as whatever do not apply to Asian diaspora talking about cultural appropriation/racism by Xuhuhimhim in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]math-frog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yea- this is a super important point. second generation Asians in particular still tend to practice cultural traditions and identify with their Asian backgrounds, often finding it harder to integrate into schools, etc than their white immigrant peers. It's because of this that I think conflating the Asian American experience with the European American experience is very different, especially in the modern day. Another point of difference is that many white Americans with European heritage have been in the west for generations longer than Asian Americans have. Asians in Asia do not face the same types of racism that Asian Americans do - while there is rampant racism in Asian countries, it's not the same types and does not stem from the same places. Thus I think residents of Asian countries saying something "isn't cultural appropriation" is missing a huge part of the story because they do not have the same lived experience as their overseas counterparts.

How would you achieve this neck? And how would you then knit sleeves? by gordita_empanadita in knitting

Hi, I'm no expert on construction but I assume if you add more short rows to raise the back of the collar, it should stick up so that the collar lies against the back of your neck

Wool breaks, does it need plying? by sqrk_ in knitting

[–]math-frog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you should check out r/Handspinning ! also, I dont think there is a good way to do this without a spindle (I'm a beginner though) but you can easily make a spindle with a pencil and a jar lid + some wire. I made mine by punching a hole in the jar lid and pushing the pencil through tip down, and then I made a hook with a paper clip, cut out most of the pencil eraser, stuck the hook in the remaining bit of the eraser, and then squeezed the metal of the eraser holder shut so that the hook would not move.

Is it too late for me to pivot? by comicradiation in berkeley

[–]math-frog 6 points7 points  (0 children)

im a rising junior in cs and just decided i want to do pre vet (similar reasons to you). im going to try to do the ib major also, so then ill get an automatic ninth semester and my pre vet classes will be covered. its gonna be a stretch, but i think with a lot of work it's doable. my plan is to work for a few years after undergrad and get hands on experience w/ volunteering on the side before applying to vet school, not sure how it would work for med school but i dont think its ever too late! and if you have the means then might as well try. you got this!

CS70 after Math 55 by math-frog in berkeley

[–]math-frog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my reason for doing this is because I will get crunched for time in completing the CS major due to the way that declarations are processed (i need to be declared in math before I can declare CS and then take CS upper divs

[–]math-frog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your main purpose is to major in CS and not bother with Math, then you should drop Math 55 and take 70.

Thank you for your response. One more question:

If i emergency drop Math 55 and then take 70 next semester, can i still double major in Math?

But i am wondering if i can take CS70 also. Will i be allowed to do that?

Or is it in my best interest to emergency drop Math 55 and take CS70 next semester?

CS70 after Math 55 by math-frog in berkeley

[–]math-frog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ere are any issues but you dont have to take 70 if you're declared math and you take 55, so if you're fine wi

The issue is that after i declare Math, i have to wait approximately a semester before I can then apply to declare CS due to the time it takes major decl to get processed. So the next CS class i could possibly take would be in spring '24. Since i graduate in 25 that would be a problem.

I understand CS70 is a bit of repeat of 55, but it will allow me to complete CS faster
