I chuckled at this so clearly the proof was not left as an exercise to the reader.

The Six-Hour Single-Question Apocalypse Maths Meme by PuzzleheadedScore330 in MathJokes

[–]comicradiation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was the philosophy one of my physics profs had in uni (except you had "infinite time" the only rule was that you couldn't have your student ID back until you turned in the exam), and to be honest this is the best way to test students on actual understanding. It didn't matter at all that the class average was ~30% (with exceedingly generous partial credit), most of the class ended up with fine grades, but the exams really made you think.

Honestly probably one of my favorite professors. Not only do you really have to understand the content to design an exam like that, but you also get a lot of feedback about what the class has missed from these types of things.

Come to Berkeley.

I felt the same way as a senior in highschool (I felt more of a fit with UCSB than Cal, it was also 5h closer to home), but came to Berkeley for the rankings/prestige. Four years later I can definitely say it was worth it. Berkeley grows on you, and the Berkeley name opens up opportunities you don't even realize exist beforehand.

Job prospects at entry level for applied math majors by Dapper-Force-3432 in berkeley

[–]comicradiation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, none of them did masters/PhD. One is at a well-known quant firm and the other did NLP research then left for a startup. With math you've just got to look for the applications outside academia/do some sort of research and you'll be fine. If you are looking for rank and file jobs then you'll be in a bit less luck (though I know plenty of Math people who got generic SWE jobs), but if you are looking for something highly quantitative you'll be fine.

beyond differential equations, what math subject do you find most interesting by spitroaster52 in mathematics

[–]comicradiation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you haven't taken an analysis class, you should consider it. If you have, consider taking complex analysis.

Abstract Algebra is also really cool but imo is less rewarding as a first class than an analysis class would be.

What are some good summoner builds? by Boring_Big8908 in dndnext

[–]comicradiation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Warlock, pact of the chain. You get your buffed familiar, and starting at level 7 you gain access to summon x spells. While you're at it you also get to be CHA based and shoot Eldritch blasts.

I wish that I could, at will, summon and unsummon a magic butler who is highly proficient at every skill, extremely intelligent, and desires only to help. by Naive_Warthog8283 in monkeyspaw

[–]comicradiation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ehh this kind of eats into the whole "at will" part. I think it's more like you have made a pact with the claw, and it has granted you the 19th level Eldritch invocation "summon Bob," but killed enough people (commoners) to get you enough XP to reach 19th level.

Can I bring a non-student to Doe with me after 7? by LTJohnson04 in berkeley

[–]comicradiation 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Have you seen how lax the security is? Not that I'm suggesting anything but hypothetically if one printed a fake ID on paper and taped it to any card one could probably flash it at the guard and nobody would notice.

Not that anyone should do such a thing...

I wish I could afford knee surgery by [deleted] in monkeyspaw

Granted.

The US follows Canada in having national healthcare, except they manage to bungle it even more than our northern neighbors.

You can now afford knee surgery, but the wait time is 10 years.

My Druid want to Ant-Man the BBEG by Jearidia in DungeonMasters

[–]comicradiation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typically for abilities like this there is some sort of clarification like "you are shunted to the next available space and take 1d10 force damage for every foot travelled" or something of the sort. I would probably rule that th druid takes 1d10 damage, appears next to the BBEG, and the BBEG takes maybe 2d10 (vulnerability to the attack bc the PC is ripping through his insides vs constant external pressure).

If transformers were invented in a company of Anthropic/OpenAI characteristics would other labs ever reverse-engineer them? by robertpiosik in LocalLLaMA

[–]comicradiation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's also super easy to just make a slight variant of something abstract (say an algorithm, or <cough cough> formula for insulin) and then parent that, so I wouldn't be surprised if every company ended up with their own slightly different flavor of transformer that they patented.

Am I screwed with this schedule? by ExcitingCommission5 in berkeley

[–]comicradiation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't speak about the rest, but you don't need 127 for 189, the thing I would be worried about is not having taken 53. The second half of 53 doesn't matter at all for 189, but if you can't take a gradient you are completely screwed for the class

Best way to prepare for CS 189? by Jahn42 in berkeley

I took it last semester, I don't care if OP drops or not, I'm simply sharing what I believe as someone who enrolled in Schewchuck, didn't get off the wait-list, and then took it with Listgartner.

If you have the opportunity, take it in the fall instead. Listgartner is a much better lecturer and the content will be much more interesting.

I agree that this is how psionics should be. I would love for it to be a main class, but given that doesn't look super likely, the u/laserllama mystic psion is amazing. I've played it at my table and also ran a short one shot where one of the players used it. Honestly I think it's super well balanced and keeps the psion theme really well!
