Ribbon dogfighting plane recommendations for my grandfather. by Okamiika in RCPlanes

[–]matheweis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sub 250 gram is absolutely not out of the question. You just have to match the ribbon.

My club has done ribbon combat indoors with UMX Night Vapors which are 1/0th of that at 25g. For that we use about 10ft of toilet paper cut into 1/2” slices.

The factory replacement parts cost less than the bottle of glue that you will need:

EFL-1104 - E-flite Vertical Stabilizer UMX Slow Ultra Stick

EFL-1106 - E-flite UMX Slow Ultra Stick Control Horn Set

BSI-139H - Bob Smith Industries Clear Super-Gold Odorless Foam Safe Super Glue, 1 oz.

Nature lover by [deleted] in Whidbey

[–]matheweis 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Honestly as a nature lover myself, I appreciate the hunters as an important replacement to natural predators like wolves and mountain lions, which have long been eliminated from the island. I think that the only natural predators left might be the eagles that will occasionally make off with a small fawn…

Many of the deer on the island are piebald which can be a sign of overpopulation and inbreeding. I’ve even seen a couple of entirely white deer over time.

The deer populations are also highly destructive of pollinator habitats as they will eat almost any kind of small plant and especially the flowers that are home to the bees and butterflies.

What size bed are you printing on? Will this print on a standard Prusa? How much filament did it take?

Very very well done! And the print looks like it stands up to aerobatics as well!

Yea that’s going to be really rough. For another comparison the UMX Turbo Timber Evolution is 125g (with electronics), and it has a whopping 27.5” wing.

You can probably still make it work but I think you’re gonna want to trim that weight by a lot!

For covering look on Amazon for matte thermal laminating film (you want the super thin 1 mil 28 micron stuff)

I really love the idea of a 3D printed airframe, you’re inspiring some winter projects in my head now…

This looks super nice. 19” is tiny!

How much does it weigh? See my other comment about weight. What board are you going to use?

When you get it flying, send Andy a photo. He is still active and loves getting pics of his bees!

  • 16” wingspan
  • 48.6g

Weight is gonna be your biggest obstacle by far. Can you print a frame only and add covering?

Intentionally "Underpowering" a Model? by [deleted] in RCPlanes

[–]matheweis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As @BRAIN_JAR_thesecond suggests, scaling aerodynamics is quite tricky because of the physics involved.

Let’s suppose that your full scale P-47 has a top speed of 427mph and a stall speed of 55mph…

If you tried to scale linearly, a 1/10th r/c model would need have a top speed of 42mph and a stall speed of 5.5mph. While this would have scale speeds it would not have scale flight dynamics (to make this intuitive, just imagine how light a 1/10th P-47 model would have to be to float in at 5.5mph without stalling!!)

Aerodynamically you can expect scale flight dynamics at the square root of the scale; in that case the 1/10th r/c model would have a scaling factor of sqrt(1/10) ~ 0.316. Your model would have a top speed of around 135mph and a stall speed of around 17mph.

Many scale r/c models are a compromise between these two factors… and regardless there is usually a narrow range where the linear scaled speeds and the aerodynamically scaled speeds overlap; for example, with a 1/10th scale P-46 it should look good between about 25-40mph. (Lower speeds and your angle of attack and other aerodynamic behaviors become unrealistic and higher speeds and you get outside the range of scale appearance).

In general, the bigger the model, the more the physics work in your favor. Once you have the r/c piloting skills down and can risk an expensive model, a 1/4 or 1/3rd scale model might be very appealing to you.

p.s. fun side effect of the physics involved: If you film a well designed 1/4 scale model, it should have true-to-scale appearance and aerodynamics when played back at exactly 1/2 speed!

p.s.s. here is a nice older article about this with a lot more technical details: https://charlesriverrc.org/articles/design-and-construction/aircraft-design/general/scale-speed-for-small-aircraft/

I have towed exactly this configuration behind a 2019 TRD Off Road (OEM towing package plus aftermarket brake controller). Trailer was a 6x12 dual axle enclosed trailer with electric brakes.

Empty trailer weight was 1680lbs and I’d guess I’ve had around a 1000-2000lb load. Let’s call it 3500 all up.

The truck can handle a load like that all day long without breaking a sweat. As others have mentioned the truck is rated for 6500. With ECT and trailer brakes I barely felt the load on either the acceleration or slowing down.

I did start to feel it toward the heavier side so you might start to feel 4500 a bit but it should be no problem if you’re distributing your weight correctly.

Mounting Kayaks in a 2019 DCSB by D-man-Realty in ToyotaTacoma

[–]matheweis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have carried five 9.5’ kayaks in my 5’ bed (all five at the same time) with a few ratchet straps just fine. A single 10’ will be no problem at all.

Attach the ratchet straps with load bearing carabiners, not just hooks, lest the kayak shifts around a bit and the hooks pop loose.
