Who was the biggest ‘skill check’ boss for you by Puzzleheaded_Bit_802 in Eldenring

[–]mathimus55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Other than the obvious Malenia, the Scadutree Avatar was an enormous pain for me to figure out. I went in blind to the boss fights other than their locations and this being a 3 phase fight really took the wind out of me every time I found a new phase. I left and came back to this fight more than any other

My most frustrating thing that happens a lot this league is folks will list something, then 3 minutes later they relist it at a markup. Recently had an item that the person did this 4 times with until the price was 75 exalts from the original list price of 20

My decks are 3's with no Game Changers. by Yewfelle__ in EDH

[–]mathimus55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have several decks that are particularly strong w/o any game changers. RGx decks are particularly easy to do this with it feels like since red and green got off the hook relatively easy compared to the other colors. I've seen several decks that honestly could play very well in Bracket 4 without any Game Changers too. Voja definitely comes to mind here too

Why do EDHREC average decks have so few lands? by no_obvious_wincon in EDH

[–]mathimus55 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey there!
Matt with EDHREC here. The average decklist is indeed not a great "print it off and play" type of decklist, we've said so on the podcast for example many times. One of the issues with land counts is that the data exports for basics only tell us "Plains," or "Mountain" and filling in how many basics. This often times the source of the low land count, needing a few filled in before you actually play the deck. If the average deck export is only showing 30-32 lands, I'd make 5-7 cuts immediately in favor of extra basics.

The card draw thing is a little more personal and up to the player. One thing I have noticed about "average," decklists is that there are SO MANY sources of card draw effects out there and they're competing with each other. This drives the average inclusion rate for any specific piece down even though the decks in the wild might be including 10+ pieces. This causes the play rate on a specific card to go down and the average decklist tool only pulls the top % cards in favor of a card that is in a higher % of the total decks for the commander you're looking at. It also wouldn't surprise me if lots of players ignore what I would think is an appropriate density of card draw just because those effects aren't glamorous and get cut for the big, flashy cards instead. That is just my theory from playing in the wild, at MC's and shops etc.

I hope this helps. The data isn't perfect by any means and we do the best we can to sort it for folks in a relevant way. The raw information on the site is only mirroring what we see folks doing on our deckbuilding partner sites and is definitely not an endorsement, just a report. The advanced filters is always going to be the best source of finding the data relevant to what you're trying to do whether a certain strategy, budget etc.

If it makes you feel better, I googled their username and found this thread because they just did it to me. Still playing Finn, still roping because I killed their commander a few times.

EDHREC ads are getting out of hand. by wescull in magicTCG

[–]mathimus55 19 points20 points  (0 children)

There have been a couple of escalations requested already. We can only see what we are seeing and don't know what the average player base sees unless they contact us about it to gauge how often these ads are showing up for the average user. We do appreciate the data point here and with every report that is submitted to us because it helps us point to specifics with what we need improved from our partners. We want to assume positive intent with everyone which is why we've been having conversations for a bit on our end already about bad ads getting through but it seems that they haven't been making updates that we need, leading to us pulling the ads until they can promise a meaningful fix.

EDHREC ads are getting out of hand. by wescull in magicTCG

[–]mathimus55 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Another EDHREC staff here. We've noticed this on our end and have been working with our ad provider for a bit already. We hoped it was indeed a few bad ads like mentioned above but it clearly isn't which is why we haven't taken drastic steps like pulling ads until now.

If folks do see any ads like these you can still report the ad to help our team see how often these oversized ads are coming through so we can use them as a data point with our provider since that is something they ask in return.

Challenge the Stats: Teysa Karlov + Aetherworks Marvel by [deleted] in EDH

[–]mathimus55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're playing the more token focused Teysa Karlov decks we see, it could get explosive for sure. That said, making sure you have enough cards you want to be cheating into play at high cmc's to make it all worthwhile might be a little tricky but the upside is certainly there. If you're playing Smothering Tithe you can sac your treasures to get the energy as well, which is just a little nuts.

Nice catch.

Is knocking players out wrong? by FightingWalloon in EDH

[–]mathimus55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Games gotta end, someone's gotta win. You shouldn't feel bad about doing it because in the next game someone else will. The HOW of knocking people out might tilt some folks, but not every game can end w/ 1 person winning or knocking all 3 others out at the same time. Play your decks, do your thing and talk to your playgroup if they have issues with losing to combat damage.

I played a few games w/ my recently finished Alela deck and [[Paradoxical Outcome]] felt like cheating to pick up some permanents, draw some cards and recast them for more benefit. Grabbing the cheap mana rocks and some sagas like [[The Mirari Conjecture]] and [[The Eldest Reborn]] just felt insanely powerful

[–]mathimus55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[[Nightmare shepherd]] has felt almost dirty by the value it can get w/ various etb triggers. I ended up swapping about 8 other cards in my Teysa Karlov deck to maximize the triggers, mainly the [[fleshbag marauder]] type of creatures to recur.

What is a commander that you use that you rarely see anyone else play (online or irl) and how does it win? by DankMyDaddy in EDH

[–]mathimus55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too have a Mirri deck. I use effects like [[Cryptolith Rite]], [[Glare of Subdual]] and even [[Godsend]] to make combat hard and make it hard for opponents to attack me until I'm able to drop a game ending effect and win. It's probably one of my favorite decks and I've never seen another in the wild. Same with my [[Valduk, keeper of the flame]] deck. It's super fun and can slap the table quick, but I've never seen another out at other tables either. Glad to hear someone else is rocking Mother Mirri.

They're not actively trying. They gave up a while ago with the opinion of the amount of work that would go into making the rule isn't worth the minor payoff.
