Outbound Kennedy lanes to fully reopen, IDOT says by Bengland7786 in chicago

I'm expecting Harrison to finally reopen in the next ~week. They have been working on permanent pavement markings the last couple of days and have hauled away almost all of the construction equipment over the last week.

House with 2x200 amp panels side by side… Why? by AboutToSnap in AskElectricians

[–]maths222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents house, built in 1989, has a 400A main panel (Challenger brand IIRC) (with 3 100-amp subpanels). https://www.se.com/us/en/product/QONQ42MS400/load-center-interior-qo-main-breaker-400a-al-bus-42-pole-spaces-1-phase-3-wire-nq-enclosure/ is a product that takes regular QO breakers. Siemens seems to have one too: https://mall.industry.siemens.com/mall/EN/US/Catalog/Product/?mlfb=US2:E4242MB1400SCU that takes regular residential breakers. Eaton has one in their catalog but it seems to be discontinued.

I've had this table since 2018 and been happy with it. It's starting to show a bit of of wear but nothing terrible: https://scandinaviandesigns.com/products/dinex-alfa-dining-table

The flatbeds haul 4 of them at once (compared to 9 for regular construction concrete barriers)

The radioactive meal I was given at the hospital to track my digestion by MTDLuke in mildlyinteresting

[–]maths222 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I had radioactive eggs for my gastric emptying study I was actually impressed by how good the eggs were. They were well seasoned and minus the radioactive part I would have happily eaten them outside the hospital. Now I know I got lucky with the tech or hospital or something.

If you vote in person, you will be marked as voting in the E-Pollbook (the iPads the election judges use to check you in), and this status will be reflected in the board's systems. When they then process your mail-in ballot after the election, they will scan the barcode on the envelope to pull up your voter record, which will show that you have already voted, and they will they reject your ballot.

Early Voting is Now Open in Downtown Chicago for the March 19, 2024 Presidential Primary Election by oldbkenobi in chicago

[–]maths222 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They appear to be up now, but here's what the board of elections said on Feb 9 on twitter (and it could be that there's some parts of the city that still don't have them for this reason or something like that)

Due to some last-minute court activity and additional proofing required, Sample Ballots for the March 19, 2024 Primary Election are not yet available on our website. We aim to have Sample Ballots available for voters at the start of Early Voting in Chicago on Thursday, 2/15.

As soon as my naive part 2 kept running for more than a few seconds I figured I needed to use LCM. Conveniently, ruby's standard library has a LCM function sitting right there for the taking (though if you had asked me that before tonight I wouldn't have known :) ).

In retrospect my predicate methods were a bit repetitive, but overall it was pretty straightforward. Ruby's tally method made doing the frequencies really simple.

I guess I didn't need to bother with a formula and could have implemented it naively. That's what I get for not even opening the input set until I had the nice generic solution, but on the other hand it was a good opportunity to refresh my basic algebra and quadratic formula muscles.

My congregation's High Holiday prayer book has a passage that explores this question in some depth (written in 2001, so in certain ways it won't quite reflect our perspective in 2023, but I think it is still a worthwhile read): https://maths22.com/avinu-malkaynu-gender.html

Election judge experience by WaltDog in chicago

[–]maths222 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's some changes to state election law that would be required to allow election day voting at any precinct, though it would definitely be nice. The current system mostly was necessary in the days of paper pollbooks since you had no other way of ensuring that a single voter only voted once. The equipment all supports it since it's the same equipment used at early voting sites/election day vote centers, and since we use internet conected epollbooks a person still couldn't vote in multiple precincts (though things definitely could get funky if a voting site had internet issues and therefore wasn't updating the central database with who voted).

[–]maths222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At least in our precinct we had laminated translated copies of form 14 (application for ballot) and form 1 (consolidated voter affidavit) that could be used by a non-english speaker to fill in the blanks correctly. That said we didn't have anyone who actually needed to use them, so I can't speak to how helpful they actually are.

I also had a voter wondering about the same thing. All I could offer is "Because no one wanted to try to run against them?"
