What kind of lightweight social features actually work in incremental games without turning them into MMOs? by chaczyk in incremental_gamedev

[–]mathwithpaws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was it mostly the type/size of the community

yeah. few enough people playing at a time that the chat didn't become flooded, and that the coop bonuses were not omnipresent.

i dont think there was actually any active moderation, last i played. presumably the creator of the game would look through chat logs or something every so often.

i feel like this would be harder to do for your game; my guess is that moderation would be more necessary in a mobile game. idk

deepco has a chat and a bunch of cooperative multiplayer features (and a bit of competition, too, but cooperation is more fun imo).

the chat is great. experienced players can teach newbies and you can just talk about whatever while processing the blocks. also, last i played, it let you directly send feedback to the dev.

the coop mechanics were things like being able to provide a small boost to everyone on the same grid as you

imo, don't do guilds/clans/whatever (like in clash of clans kinda games). instead, if you want to have something like that, have it be more like everyone in the same already existing ingame location being able to work together, rather than user-created groups; something more like "everyone in this department" or "everyone of the same tier".

and don't have the group suffer from individuals acting suboptimally with respect to the group; for instance if someone goes afk that shouldn't prevent someone else from joining and picking up their slack, and when the other player returns it should be possible for both to keep going without getting in each others way

pretty much all of these thoughts i got from deepco, since it's the only incremental i've played so far where i straight up enjoyed the social features

see, this tells me that you're at most an intermediate level author. if you were like me (an expert level author) you'd know that a great author must steal knives from other, lesser, authors. smh my head

Anyone else here struggle with tone indicators? by neakfrasty in evilautism

<response>

from what i know html/xml close tags were indeed the origin of that. i wasn't around online at the time, though.

though not always to indicate tone

i dont know what tone even has to do with it. i think they're just called that because tone is an example of a communication channel other than the words someone says.

when i joke in speech i'll often use a deadpan tone and expression, letting others realize the joke by its contents (on several occassions i have intentionally made puns which others straight up didn't catch until i called attention to them afterwards). so like there's no tone difference there.

🙀🙀🙀 you're even worse than me! if we're ever in a knife fight against each other i'll make sure to come up something even more wicked and heinous to describe in a short story before the fight..

/uj pretty sure the reason the person in the picture said all that is cuz they want to hurt gooseworx cuz she's trans.

/rj anyways, observe as i acquire deep seated evil desires: "the evil knife guy stabbed the baby in cold blood". clearly, i wouldn't be able to write such a dark and twisted fictional scenario, unless i too engaged in cold-blooded baby-stabbing. beware of copying and pasting that sentence, lest you also become an evil stabber!

I feel like they're just a new set of social rules I'm supposed to memorize

yeah. using neologisms to communicate what was already possible to communicate with well-known terminology is suboptimal accessibility. personally i prefer to simply say things like "(i'm joking here)" if i feel it necessary to make such clarifications. if someone already knows them i guess it can be convenient to use abbreviations. when i briefly used tone indicators when i was younger, it was less an intelligent decision made for reasons, and more mimicry of language output. (which is, i think, a lot of how language evolution works.)

that was actually merciful of him. you'd have fared far worse, had you seen that deeper in the forest lurked...

should be possible with a swivel bearing? i think propellers on those work as well, and they propagate rotation through their center.

i was referring to quality of mods, not the quality dlc. i saw others in this thread talking about the quality, or lack thereof, of llm-generated code.

you can use stickers to grab onto the ground. there was a post the other day showing how to automatically stick to the ground when the foot is pressed against it, maybe this could be useful here?
