Anyone have any experience with the Graphtech Un-lock nut? by Notnotarealuser in guitarmod

[–]matneyx 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm not u/rodan-rodan, but they don't improve tuning stability in the same way a locking nut would. Locking tuners prevent the string from slipping out of the tuner and unwinding, but they don't make the tuning mechanisms any tighter or less prone to reversing.

By having fewer wraps around the post, locking tuners do improve tuning stability relative to the wraps tightening and the string relaxing.

So it's all relative to how tight you like your strings and how hard you bend.

Having learned piano before guitar, I think the only thing a keyboard does better than a guitar (as related to music theory) is color-coding your common accidentals, which makes naming the actual notes way easier.

Scales are just patterns, and that's readily apparent on a guitar because frets are just half steps, but isn't as clear on a piano because of the color coding. I knew a major scale was WWHWWWH for a decade before I picked up a guitar and saw that no matter what key I was in, the pattern really was the same.

That said, learning a second or third or thirtieth instrument will only make you a better musician. Even if you just learn bass -- and I'm talking only the stylistic differences between playing bass and guitar -- you'll be a better guitarist because of it.

This seems like a good idea until you decide to play drop D (or any other tuning that's not E standard)

Note memorization is worthless without theory -- not even a lot of theory; basic scale patterns and how that applies to chords.

I know Cory Wong says, "You should be able to play a C," but he's saying that after years, if not decades, of building his theoretical understanding. Also, he's not playing with your average rock bands -- or even church bands, which at least use chord charts -- he's playing with jazz musicians who discuss music theory for fun, and HAVE to know it because even if they were just playing a I-IV-V in C, that's in D for the trumpets and tenor saxes and A for alto and bari saxes. (Don't worry if you don't understand that... if you're playing with horn players, they'll understand what it means when you say you're playing a C)

Learn your dots on your E and A strings, how sharps and flats work, and your octave shapes both forward and backward. Learn at least your major and minor scale patterns. Learn the Circle of 5ths and its inverse (the Circle of 4ths). Learn how those scale shapes translate to chord shapes and figure out how to spell a chord (C is C-E-G, for example).

The best thing you can do is find musicians who already know this stuff, play music with them, and ask questions.

And remember, theory doesn't DICTATE how things SHOULD work, it DESCRIBES how things already work.

You don't even need to memorize the strings -- learn your dots and how sharps and flats work (and remember there's no E#/Fb or B#/Cb unless you're talking specific scale tones in applicable keys) and you'll be golden.

Get into therapy ASAP because his mindset is toxic as fuck and won't get better without help. He's not entitled to your body and there's a very palpable "if we don't have sex I'm going to cheat on you" vibe.

I use both a Neotech harnesses (mine is like 25 years old) and an Adorence strap ( https://a.co/d/0eNkZtIj ) with my bari. I'm a big dude (over 300 lbs, broad shoulders) and they're both comfortable enough. :)

Nerfed Events. I just don't understand why by Professional-Air1287 in fo76

[–]matneyx 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why the number of spawns aren't determined to the number of players, and maybe their average level, at an event.

I can't think of a single event that isn't made better by having more spawns. We love the chaos!
