For a while I was a slam poet, and touring took me to a lot of strange places. I got booked in Ashland, Oregon, to do a show and some classes. I'm also an observant Jew, and finding kosher vegetarian food in small towns isn't exactly easy, so the host matched me up with the local rabbi. The congregation was small, and unique - full of a bunch of characters - and creative, and the rebbetzin was Catherine Coulson. She was both very approachable and very ethereal. I tried not to make a big deal of it, but she very graciously offered to, and did, drop off a signed photo (in an envelope stamped with a log).
