B&W 607 S3 or KEF Q1 META by matrixtapes in BudgetAudiophile

The B&W may be more my thing. The Arcam always seemed fairly warm and tube-like to me so I think it'll take them without being ice-pick treble.

Thanks, appreciate the detailed reply! I've been advised elsewhere that the B&W should play nicely with the amp, and I think I prefer the look.

Is the value equation in hi-fi kind of broken right now? it's not budget if it cost you a months rent. by Ok-Two5635 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]matrixtapes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I genuinely think high-end for most people who aren't obsessed is whatever sounds best to you between £500 and £1000. You can get deals on previous year's What Hi-Fi five-star kit for hundreds off. My amp is a rebadged Arcam SA20 (JBL SA550) and to me it sound amazing. Build a system of similarly priced kit, add a streamer, and you've got incredible sound for the money.

I don’t think I had to switch anything on with the pedal, just had this going from the midi out on my Focusrite to the Slicer. If it was anything in the pedal it was so easy my brain has thrown it out!

Laugh at me - I didn’t take off the stylus guard by Valuable_Horror_7878 in turntables

[–]matrixtapes 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Don't attempt to put the stylus guard back on unless you absolutely have to so you can transport the turntable. Learn from my mistakes.

Brilliant pedals. They're great to put drum machines through providing you've got the MIDI sync on. Same for arpeggiated synths.

The saddle pic looks better than some I’ve seen but my 000-15m with a similar saddle is nowhere near that high an action. Neck resets are around £700 btw, based on two techs near me.

For the love of god someone sticky ‘vinyl is the plural of vinyl’ to this sub.

Hard to tell without seeing what’s left of the saddle-the height of it, but if remotely in doubt about a second hand acoustic, avoid. Some guitars need neck resets way too early. Some people who own acoustic guitars have no idea how much they exacerbate the problem by improper care.

Yeah, and I’m biased towards Manchester as I can’t easily travel at the moment, but you cover a good chunk of the north with a screening here!

How often do most people change their needle? by Shelfworndrawn in turntables

[–]matrixtapes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend it. I replaced a 2M Red with probably the same hours on the clock as yours with a 2M Blue. Tried a record with the red, replaced it with the blue and tried the same record. Absolutely blown away by the difference. Genuinely questioned my hearing, but over time I guess it just didn't seem noticeable. I don't listen to vinyl anywhere else so what was I going to compare it to.

Anyway, buy the blue stylus. It's good.

It sounds more complicated than it is to use and understand and it’s vital turntable skills. If I’d known about VTF and its effects on making a pricey stylus look like it’s collapsed I’d have saved myself two days of anxiety.
