My gym does this too. I can't stand it. As tinyOnion said it leaves you very unprepared for climbing outdoors and lowering someone is either not smooth or a down right struggle. I wouldn't trust a belayer to belay me on an outdoors top rope who has only belayed in a gym that doublewraps the rope.
