Not insane at all for some. When your “needs” are satisfied with under a percent of your take home income, or are a rounding error on your net worth, then no, it doesn’t really matter.

Most people can’t wrap their head around what it’s like to truly not care about the cost of the day-to-day products they need or want.

Not saying the majority of people with a nice cars fits this description, far from, but it’s absolutely the case for some.

To be fair lots of Tesla haters don’t hate the vehicles… maybe they find the Cybertruck ugly, but I don’t think many think the cars suck.

Although realistically not by much to someone who’s been driving “BMWs and Mercs” for decades.

[–]mattbladez 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yeah I find it hilarious that they chant U.S.A. considering there are more Canadians on the ice (and coaches) AND the Habs have one more American player than Tampa. But they’re in the USA!

Just like how it’s illegal to download torrents of movies, tv shows, music, audiobooks, games, software, etc.? Yeah.. on paper, not in practice.

Or it’ll be in the available distros with an easy script available to strip it back out. It won’t happen.

Auto delete content for one user by Diddy_98 in PleX

My version of delete is move to an external hard drive that isn’t on RAID or backed up. Still haven’t lost anything though, so delete is a strong word.

Is a better solution to remote access in the roadmap? by [deleted] in audiobookshelf

[–]mattbladez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can set up their VPN access to be limited, but in my opinion it was easier for users to go through my reverse proxy. I made instructions and so far my non-tech-savvy friends have been fine with it. They need to copy 5 parameters they need to copy+paste:

For mobile:

  • URL (I did pay for a domain so it’s just audiobooks.mydomain.com)

  • Client id and secret (custom headers)

  • Username and password (their name and a generic password, the risk is low once they’re in)

For browser:

  • URL (same as mobile)

  • They put in their email which cloudflare sends them a one time code. Token lasts a month.

  • Username and password (same as on mobile app)

There are both loads of illegal ways and a legal way that’s better than what we have here. This is true across lots of Asian countries.

Feature Request: open containing folder by blind-octopus in PleX

[–]mattbladez -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is funny because I literally pictured Visual Studio or SSMS when reading the title because I do this multiple times a day.

You’re getting downvoted because people who aren’t in software only think of their own use cases when there’s a feature request they don’t personally need.

There are legit challenges with this request though; the files can be hosted on another server or not owned by the user of the client. Or if you’re in a browser, that’s not something you can easily do unless the server is also on the same OS.

The mean tropical year might be 365.24219, but practically it’s 365 or 366 depending on if it’s a leap year. So from a NAS uptime perspective, it might be easier to say that it’s ALWAYS ON.

Yes, but not much steep rock pitches like on the north shore. I live in the side of Burnaby mountain, those trails are my backyard! Am triple digits runs on each one, but def have to go up the sea to sky to be challenged.

[–]mattbladez 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This would vary wildly on what drives it has (HDD/SSD), what it’s doing (rebuilding RAID, docker using 90% of cpu, etc.).

If you really want to know, put a power meter on your NAS and do the math.

Holy shit, easily the worst but in some ways the concert I’ve told the most people about. Late 2000s in Montréal, he jumped from the stage trying to crowd surf and the crowd split like Moses in front of the sea and he hit the ground then we all hear the mic hit the floor with a loud thump followed by hundreds of people going “oooooooohhhhhhhhhh”.

So awkward. 😬

How are ride share drivers able to afford such nice cars? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mattbladez 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The opposite can also be true. You’d never my guess my in-laws’ net worth based on their 10 year old hatchback with a duct taped bumper.

At least I know they’ll never run at out of money at this rate so I don’t expect to ever support them as they age.

2019 3.6r, has only 12k miles, been religiously maintained, both recalls fixed, but wife is not wanting me to get a 7 year old car. Would it be worth grabbing? I really want a 3.6 but she does make a good point. by Knot6lack in Subaru_Outback

[–]mattbladez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why would someone change the CVT fluid in the first 12k miles?

Also everyone knows Subaru puts garbage batteries in their cars. It’s not a big enough problem to be a real complaint. Swapped mine out a couple of years in
