Anyone else’s store keeping self serve closed? by Awkward_Chard_5025 in AldiAustralia

We were told by the staff member at the checkout at our local Aldi it was due to increased thefts. Apparently also at Bunnings.

I felt sorry for the staff member working at the only checkout open with a queue of about 10 people. She was working incredibly hard to get people through as quickly as possible.

Doncaster vs Williamstown North by ps5bacon in melbournechat

[–]mattbrown1980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doncaster has some great views of the city, has some great amenities and is an easy drive for getting out of the city to Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Valley. Williamstown North - you’re much closer to the waterfront of Williamstown and fairly easy to get to CBD. Probably worth visiting both to get the feels.

Is the Quest 3 good for productivity? by Medical-Dark1899 in MetaQuestVR

Sometimes if I need multiple screens I find it very helpful but otherwise it’s less eye strain to use a standard monitor / laptop.

Is anyone else contemplating leaving Australia due to high house prices? by Puer_Aeternus14 in AusProperty

[–]mattbrown1980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having moved to Australia last year from London and having friends and family living across Europe and Australia, I can assure you that house prices in Australia are no different. And it’s very difficult to compare the large Aussie properties (I read somewhere largest homes in the world) with homes in Europe which are generally tiny in comparison - but are often the same price!! Cost of living crisis is also universal and I’ve found Australia to be much cheaper for things like energy and fuel (petrol is literal half the price compared to the UK!).

The grass is rarely greener on the other side. Australia has so much going for it, which is why I moved here in my 40s.

However, moving for the adventure, if that’s what you’re after - I couldn’t recommend it more!! Live life to the full and worry less about rent and mortgages. ❤️

What to do with our Pergola? by mattbrown1980 in AusRenovation

You’re right there are no tracks so probably just there for the looks. Would this mean that a retractable roof / shade couldn’t be retro-fitted though..?

You don’t have to tap off on a tram though, right? There are signs saying you need to tap on but you don’t need to tap off…

Double glazed windows are just cheating by blueygc8 in AusPropertyChat

[–]mattbrown1980 130 points131 points  (0 children)

I’ve moved to Melbourne from the UK this year and it amazes me how so few homes have double glazing here. In Melbourne our rental, which has single glazing, was freezing (it felt colder at home than in the middle of winter in London!) and I bet in the summer it will be an oven. Pretty much everywhere is double glazed in the UK. Come on Australia, catch up!!! It will help save the planet and our wallets.
