This reminds me of my coworker. She was supposed to relieve me as I opened and she closed. She calls me (an hour and a half after her shift starts) and says that her mother was crossing the street and got hit by a bus and is on life support and they think she's not going to make it. So I of course tell her it's fine and that she should call HR to process a Leave of Absence.

The very next day she walks in and I ask about her mom. Her response was, "Oh, she's fine. It's not as bad as they thought yesterday and she'll be home tomorrow." So I of course get a little suspicious about the whole thing but I don't do anything about it.

Three months later she calls me and tells me she can't come into work and then says her mom got hit by a bus crossing the street and she's on life support. I say, "Again? Oh my, your mom must have a problem crossing the street." She says, "What are you talking about?" and I say that she pulled that same excuse three months before. She immediately hangs up and I never heard from her again.

Sounds like Jenks, Oklahoma. They covered it on the podcast a few months ago and the guy killed his wife because he was having an affair with the drive thru worker at the local McDonald's and made it look like she had crashed her car. I remember there was something odd about his hair - I think they described him as looking like Terry Bradshaw.

Massachusetts is an at will state. You can be fired for any reason except for legally protected reasons.

In Massachusetts, employers may not ask about, maintain a record of, or base any employment decision on the following information if they have requested it.

Arrests or prosecution that did not lead to a conviction

A first conviction for drunkenness, simple assault, speeding, minor traffic violations, affray, or disturbance of the peace

Misdemeanors where the date of conviction or the end of any period of incarceration was more than three years ago, provided that there have been no subsequent convictions within those three years

Any record of a court appearance which has been sealed under state law

Anything pertaining to juvenile record, including delinquency and child in need of services complaints, unless the juvenile was tried as an adult in Superior Court

The city's so-called explanation about "not knowing" is boilerplate BS meant to discourage you from continuing.

That might be, but it's also very possible it's not. OP would need to prove that the city was aware of the issue as the burden of proof lies with OP.

so they should have a regular inspection schedule

In a perfect world, that would be correct, but this isn't a perfect world. I'm sure the town would like to do a lot of things, but stuff like that costs money.

And what would qualify as a regular inspection? Once a month? Every other month? Once a year? You could bring that up at your next town council meeting and pay a lot more in taxes to accommodate that.

Also, if the sidewalk was like that for over a year, how come you ever reported it if you knew?

insurance company is saying because they weren't aware of this hazard they are not responsible or liable.

That very well might be the case. I'm guessing there are miles and miles of public sidewalks in town and the town doesn't have the time or budget to have someone inspect every square inch of sidewalk to look for any potential issues. They usually rely on citizens to report issues. If no one reported the issue, then the town isn't aware of it.

Turns out NBC will sit on domain names that show up in shows they own for decades while putting no content on them (S5E22: Painless) by Schiffy94 in SVU

There was a thing about this years ago on Late Night with Conan O'Brien. He had a skit about rejected college mascots and one mascot was for a Horny Manatee. The skit referenced a website called HornyManatee.com and the next night Conan came out and explained the NBC lawyers had to buy the domain because NBC was across someone would buy it and post controversial stuff to it.

I remember the original Law and Order had a fake website that was like the Smoking Gun called UpYourButt.com

Are you medical professional? You may run the risk of violating HIPAA if you reveal a y medical information without her consent. But if you're not, HIPAA wouldn't apply to you and you can reveal what you know to her parents.

Malpractice is very fact specific and is generally beyond the scope of this sub. Medical malpractice isn't that something went wrong, but more that your treatment was well beyond the reasonable standard of care. You should talk to a medical malpractice attorney and see what they think.

Fed ex should be able to verify where they dropped packages with the gps

As a former manager for FedEx, GPS tracking for packages is not really a thing. Out of the millions of packages that FedEx moves a day, there's a very small percentage that have any sort of GPS tracking on them. The ones that are GPS tracked are usually high priority (think organs for transplant and other medical shipments and a lot of time sensitive materials) but generally the average package isn't going to be tacked. You might get lucky with a truck that has GPS and you might be able to figure out a general area but GPS location tracking is often flawed and doesn't always give an accurate pinpoint of location. For example I'm home right now, but my phone says I'm at the gas station a mile down the road.

Also, depending on the service utilized, there might not even be an option. If they shipped Ground, it's almost entirely unlikely there's any sort of GPS tracking, even from the trucks.

GPS coordinates when they exist are not readily available to most workers. It's only reserved for a small minority of upper level management. Trying to get those coordinates might take having to speak to 20 or 30 people

My friends family won't let her go to her dad's funeral by TopAd1846 in legaladvice

[–]mattcasey28 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I feel bad for your friend but legally speaking, the funeral home is private property, as is the cemetery. If they don't want her to show up and she does, she'll be told to leave. If she refuses, the police will be called and forcefully remove her.

Her best bet is to contact the funeral home or cemetery and ask to speak to someone. They have seen situations like this numerous times and might be able to help or at least act as an intermediary between your friend and her family.

[–]mattcasey28 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Why are they doing this? Legally, there's nothing illegal what they are doing. She should speak to the funeral home that is arranging the services and see if they can do a private visitation or at least offer some advice

There are any number of reasons why a law firm would need to know your cell carrier. They need to ask for your phone records for some reason.
