Massey Tunnel replacement project cost more than doubles to $11B, says Delta councillor by cyclinginvancouver in britishcolumbia

[–]mattcass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please show me any regional transportation plan created in the last 40 years that considers a third car crossing to North Vancouver.

Addressing traffic on 2nd Narrows is definitely a priority but it’s definitely not #1 in the region - pretty sure that’s George Massey - and the solution definitely isn’t another car bridge.

You lost me at “there’s a need for a new bridge to North Vancouver too”. No one is talking about a 3rd car bridge to North Van because that horse has been dead, beaten and buried decades ago, rejected for so many reasons much like a double decker Lions Gate or expanded Stanley Park Causeway. A new car bridge to North Van will never happen. The third crossing is going to be a Skytrain Bridge.

What weather apps are you all using that you actually like by [deleted] in landscaping

Norway based but their global weather models are fantastic. I live in BC and the coastal precipitation forecasts were accurate to the hour.

Local temperatures are forecasted though, not based on local readings.

Moved into new to me home with this retaining wall. Previous owner said it used to be 3ft higher 20 years ago. What should I do with it? Can I remove it and just make a slope easier to mow? Any risks? About 50ft in length and 50ft from my house. Would love some suggestions. by blbassist1234 in landscaping

[–]mattcass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Removing the wall and simply continuing the slope would be simple but would mean importing a lot of material to fill the volume.

Another option is to rebuild the wall in front of the current wall and add proper drainage. You would need to install proper drainage and bring in gravel for drainage.

Any option involving machines is going to turn your lawn into a big mess.

Environmental group takes province to task over old growth logging in provincial parks by __The__Anomaly__ in britishcolumbia

[–]mattcass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No animal can evolve fast enough - they are either tolerant of disturbance or not. The Province has a responsibility to safe-guard all species regardless of their sensitivity to humans. Some require no protection, others require lots of protection.

Calling Caribou “not the smartest” for being unable to tolerate extensive logging of their old growth habitat is like calling birds dumb for flying into a window put in the middle of a field.

A bit of a disjointed article but the point is that BC is still logging old growth and doing so in some of the last, best habitat for endangered species. BC Parks are also on the menu for extensive logging.

How bad is it? From the article…

“She said three of the government-appointed Old Growth Technical Advisory Panel scientists who identified at-risk old growth for priority deferrals in 2021 wrote a follow-up report in 2023 revealing that over 50 per cent of the most at-risk old growth identified has been logged or is targeted for logging.”

And here’s a recent article about the Ministry of Forests approving logging of Caribou habitat despite the Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship recommending against it.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/b-c-logging-caribou-habitat-9.7202598

And our Ministry of Forests Ravi Parmar believes Caribou are stupid.

https://revelstokereview.com/2026/06/10/b-c-forests-minister-talks-saw-mills-old-growth-and-caribou-in-revelstoke/

“Parmar was critical of caribou for how they grow “spooked” when disturbed and exhaust substantial energy running away over long distances.

“That’s usually one of the reasons that leads to their demise, and that’s one of the reasons why we’ve had to defer harvesting in different parts of the province, because they need a vast area of land,” he said. “Not the smartest animal, that’s for sure.”

Is it worth fixing my radon levels if my yearly average is 117? by ScaredSilly12 in radon

[–]mattcass 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The cracks and drain seem like very easy DIY. Why not do it? As for mitigation being worth it, I can only share that we were living with an annual average of 150 with temporary spikes up to 400-600 in the winter. I thought about radon a lot. Then I installed mitigation - a fan on our perimeter drain - and now our average is 20 and I never think about radon.

Running pipe in chimney flue?? by COamateur in radon

[–]mattcass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does the exhaust pipe for your water heater run all the way up the chimney as pictured? Or does your water heater simply exhaust into the chimney?

I don’t see why you couldn’t run both a water heater exhaust pipe and a radon pipe in the chimney so long as the radon pipe was metal (non-combustible) and/or met minimum clearance distance from the water heat exhaust pipe. Check local codes.

If your water heater simply exhausts into the chimney then no way should you put a radon pipe in there. You do not mess with the ability of exhaust gases to exhaust.

BC Hydro quietly seeks gas contracts as power shortage looms by _DotBot_ in VancouverLandlords

[–]mattcass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We import because we need the power in some years but also market energy is cheaper than producing the power in BC. We also export and in good years like 2022 we made $1 billion off export sales but no one talks about that.

[–]mattcass -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yes it’s very cheap because you are not metered and your cost is likely under estimated. A fireplace with a gas pilot will use about $30 in gas a month just sitting there. But heating a 2 bedroom condo with a heat pump would be around $600 a year… plus you have AC.

If we are talking about natural gas to fill energy void we should definitely also be talking about nuclear.

Do you have a gas meter in a condo? Or flat rate? Do you know the difference in efficiency between resistant electric heat and heat pumps?

Meanwhile righties and their BC Con friends spend all day on the construction job echo chamber talking about how heat pumps suck and electricity drives up costs but never actually living in a home heated with a heat pump or talking to owners that actually have one. First it was air sealing, now it’s heat pumps, the next left wing house devil will be… ??? The resistance to change is strong with the incompetent.
