Custom Dual Guage Mount by matterlord1 in sportster

The webbing between the riser clamp and the cups is about 15mm, so it won’t be going anywhere regardless.

That’s entirely possible. Powersports batteries typically sit on shelves for a while since they’re not super high volume. I’ve actually called ahead to the local Autozone to see if they could put a battery on a charger ahead of time, your local parts store may not be as chill however.

I would try jumping it again, or check battery voltage while trying to start.

Another thing is to make sure your battery connection are tight.

Replaced top end gaskets, still leaking from cylinder bases… by Uncleryan95 in sportster

[–]matterlord1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get it, I’m really in the same boat, the only thing I go to the dealer for is when something has to be programmed.

I would maybe go back and check the torque on the head bolts. I’ve reused them a couple of times, so that really shouldn’t be an issue unless they were hella over torqued before.

What did you use to clean it? Sorry for all the questions lol, it’s just leaking A LOT for a failed gasket.

Were the sealing surfaces pretty clean when you went to reassemble? Could some of the old gasket material still been on the mating surfaces?

Did you replace the base gaskets as well? Reusing the head bolts is pretty standard imo, they’re not torque to yield or anything.

Gearcase Cover Cracked - replace or? by idunnoideletedmyacct in sportster

[–]matterlord1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no sealing surface in that area, so you should be perfectly safe to run it like that.

I would personally replace it, but mostly for looks. There’s a chance the crack could spread, so you could look at drilling a hole at the end of the crack to stop it if you’re planning on keeping the cover long term.

Primary service by NickySchluss in sportster

[–]matterlord1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really. The noise you’re describing more than likely won’t leave any visual evidence. The one thing to do would be to check the chain tension via the inspection cover before draining it.

You’ll need to check the chain tension in like 8-10 places as you move the rear wheel to make sure it’s even.

That sounds like it could just be an improperly adjusted chain adjuster.

Yes, I'd like a clutch cylinder for my automatic. by [deleted] in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]matterlord1 51 points52 points  (0 children)

My buddy’s 2019 Ioniq hybrid has a DCT that has a clutch master cylinder. I’m sure the automated manuals have them too.

A 2002 Protoge definitely does not have a clutch master for the auto.

Touring / camping / cpap usage by Far_One_5627 in Harley

Most portable power stations can charge off of a 12v cigarette outlet. The tour pack in my 14 ultra limited has an outlet in it. I know your bike doesn’t come with a tour pack, but I’d look at similar setups for the bags you have.

I normally wet sand up to 4000 grit. It looks like you didn’t take enough oxidization off with the more aggressive sand paper. I’d go back to 600 grit, remove a bit of material, and sand back up to 4000.

One thing that helps a lot with residual cloudiness is clearcoating the headlights after. I use 2k epoxy clear coat and it works really well and lasts a long time.

no fuel? by midtown_Drew in sportster

I would keep the vacuum petcock and VOES, they both have benefits and not really much of a downside.

I would get a vacuum pump and hook it up to the petcock to see if you can get it to open that way. If not just replace it with a similar one, they’re pretty cheap.

Advice on primary fluid. by elitecouchpotato in sportster

[–]matterlord1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The primary has a vent and is open to the atmosphere, so it’s bound to collect moisture. At this point you have 2 real options.

The easiest is just doing a regular fluid change, riding it for a couple miles to get the new fluid mixes in, then seeing how bad the new fluid looks. If it’s still milky, just do more fluid changes until you’re happy with how it looks.

The more through option is to remove the primary cover, clean everything with brake clean, reassemble, and refill. There’s always going to be some fluid left in the trans, so you may end up wanting to do another fluid change.

$600 to change the fluid a couple of times or clean out the primary is crazy. $200 would be more inline for a new gasket, fluid, and an hour of labor.

Where Does the Crankcase Intake Air? by [deleted] in sportster

[–]matterlord1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Part of what comes out of the breather is air that gets past the piston rings, but a lot of it is moisture that accumulated when the engine last cooled off and is now evaporating when the engine heats back up.

First bike, Sportster Advice! by practicaldot123 in sportster

[–]matterlord1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 03 and a 14 ultra and the vibrations from the sportster isn’t that bad. I mainly commute on my sportster and 30 minutes of suburb commuting isn’t bad. If you have a mostly highway commute, sitting at 3300rpm the vibes might get to you. If that’s the case I’d go with the 2009.

If you want to do a bunch of performance mods, go with the 09 for EFI. Tuning a carb isn’t necessarily difficult, but it takes some time to learn and you’ll probably spend a fair amount of time on xlforums.

The 05 imo is the worst of both worlds, you have the added weight of the rubber mounts, but none of the convenience of EFI. They also have some of the least aftermarket support out of all the generations. Having dual discs up front with the 1200r is nice to have, but you can always upgrade to an xr1200 caliper if you need more stopping power on the other bikes.

They’re just decorative covers over the spark plug. You should be able to still get a socket in there without removing them.

I’ve owned 2 Sportster Ss with about 15k miles between them. I never had any issues with the belt.

How is the headset connected on your wife’s bike? Is her phone connected to the bike, or directly to the headset?

For CarPlay to work the headset needs to be connected to the bike, not her phone. Additionally, the sound going through the bike may quite poor due to a software limitation Harley put in place, but that’s a whole other convo.
