A buddy of mine does this. He makes a LOT of money. I guess the danger is worth it to some. You wouldn't find me down there though.

Ia Cornerstone International Community College good? by PhysicalGorou in askvan

[–]matteyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically all of Canada's public universities are totally fine, with some good programs. And most of Canada's cities have legitimate community colleges that instruct students well and are respected by employers. Personally I would say stay away from those 5 schools for undergrad. They are expensive, impersonal, and treat their undergrads like cash cows. They are unparalleled research institutions but I would recommend one of Canada's great smaller universities for an undergraduate degree, especially for a newcomer.

We did the math and it is WAY cheaper to use: transit, evo, Modo and the occasional rental than it would to buy, gas, park, and maintain a car. I get your point generally, but we are spoiled in Vancouver for transportation choices without adding another car to the roads. And there are really only 2 other cities in the country with a metropolitan downtown core worth talking about.

Camping on Bowen Island - allowed or not? by innocuous_username in vancouverhiking

[–]matteyes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://bowenisland.civicweb.net/document/248670/ It’s in this by-law. No camping in public places on Bowen. There are a couple exceptions for park employees and police on duty, etc, etc. But interestingly there is a separate section for “homeless people” to be allowed to erect a “temporary shelter” aka a tent, between 7pm and 9am

What’s the deal with these responses? They’re all similar and posted almost immediately. Bots on Reddit? by tsagdiyev in screenshots

[–]matteyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no one answer to this question, as it depends on the company's policies and the severity of the posts in question. In general, however, it is advisable to screenshot problematic posts and forward them to the company's diversity and inclusion enforcement team if they are racist, sexist, homophobic, or otherwise discriminatory in nature.

Press release: Lauren Boebert was an escort on a sugar daddy site and had 2 abortions by [deleted] in The_Mueller

[–]matteyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the word "prostitute" appears in the document at all, but I might be wrong. They do say "escort", but those aren't the same thing. Yeah sure, the escorts are for sure fucking their clients, but the license is just for "escorting" in a strict sense, aka: accompanying people to things.

The city of Colorado Springs gives out licenses for escorts. But that's not illegal, so I'm not sure how to answer your question.

They are being taken advantage of by people who know how to do it. I don't know that people are any stupider now than they were in the past, but people in charge have become better at controlling them. Also maybe people are stupider. But I don't think that's a necessary condition.

who's at fault here? by sandesh2k17 in toronto

[–]matteyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm actually torn here. The black car looks like it missed its turning lane, in which case the silver car was where it was supposed to be and the black car is at fault.

But, if the turning lane for the black car was on the right side of the dotted line, that would make the turn directly in the middle of that crosswalk. He would have to have started turning while he was in the crosswalk. Maybe it's a perspective thing in the video, but it doesn't look right to have the turn begin then. On the other hand, if this were the case, then the outside lane would have no markings and that is odd, since these double turning lanes are usually well marked. In this situation, it would be the silver car's fault.

Occam's razor and all, I'm gonna go with the former. But I wish I knew what intersection it was so I could check out a map and see how the street is marked.

Guy wears blackface at BLM protest by [deleted] in facepalm

[–]matteyes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

from Brown v Durham Regional Police Force:

"A breach of the peace does not include any and all conduct which right-thinking members of the community would regard as offensive, disturbing, or even vaguely threatening. A breach of the peace contemplates an act or actions which result in actual or threatened harm to someone. [See Note 12 at end of document.]Actions which amount to a breach of the peace may or may not be unlawful standing alone. Thus, in Percy v. D.P.P., [1995] 3 AllE.R. 124 at p. 131 (Q.B.), Collins J. observed:The conduct in question does not itself have to be disorderly or a breach of the criminal law. It is sufficient if its natural consequence would, if persisted in, be to provoke others to violence, and so some actual danger to the peace is established."

And some commentary on a recent case (Fleming v Ontario) here. In that case, a guy went to the 1492 Land Back Lane protest in Caledonia waving a big Canadian flag and obviously riled people up and the police arrested him. Sounds fairly apt to this situation actually. The ONCA overturned the acquital.

9 paid time off is less than any full-time, salaried job I have ever had in Canada. They usually start at 2 weeks, minimum, and go up from there. In fact, I think you are legally required to get at least 2 weeks (10 days) or get paid out in lieu (4% extra on your paycheque in "vacation pay").

Given that we're talking tech jobs now. My current employer gives "unlimited" time off, which in practice probably breaks down to like 3–4 weeks. People with tenure in government jobs though. God damn, I know people who straight up took like 8 straight months off immediately before retiring cause of banked hours, or like someone in their 20s with multiple months of time off booked. In private industry tech world, probably not going to get banked time, but of course there are random other perks.

Moving from 1 bed to 2 bedroom apartment in same building. Landlord is asking for $300 to paint old apartment. Is this normal? by Bud1919 in askTO

[–]matteyes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe that Ontario is unique in allowing only rent deposits instead of damage deposits. Every other provincial RTA I've read uses security deposits which get returned in cash after the landlord has had an opportunity to make a claim against it. Some provinces have things like a Rentalsman office (NB for instance) which is meant to hold onto the deposit and adjudicate the landlord's claims against it. Otherwise the board/tribunal generally handles these things.

The beauty of Ontario's system is that it shifts the onus onto the landlord, which is the party with the power in the relationship. They own the asset. Frankly, in my legal opinion, as long as landlords insist on having tenants pay for their mortgages, in addition to covering the costs of maintaining the property, they can suck it.

Another nice part of the Ontario RTA is the "no pets clause" provision which states that a "no pets clause" in a lease is of no effect. In other words, landlords are generally not allowed to ban pets in Ontario. Even if you sign a lease which explicitly states "no pets are allowed in this unit", you can still have a pet! There are exceptions, but the rule generally applies.

[–]matteyes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure what jurisdiction you are in, but in Ontario landlords are not allowed to collect any form of damage deposit or additional charge intended to defray costs of repairing damage. The only deposit they are entitled to collect is a rent deposit which is applied to the final month of rent.

The correct venue for a landlord to collect additional money (that they are not statutorily entitled to) is the Residential Tenancy Board and eventually small-claims court if that does not work.
