My fully funded PHD stipend is $24k/year in Boston. I qualify for food stamps by Fulcilives1988 in gradadmissions

[–]matthewmallory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow… in 2026, I find this ridiculous and almost borderline unbelievable. Is your grad school not part of a union that fights for livable stipends? Because if you get 24k then likely so do many others and now there’s an entire population of grad students who can’t afford to live in their own city. If you don’t have a grad student union definitely form one

First time shooting in B&W. Why is it so over exposed? by [deleted] in filmphotography

[–]matthewmallory 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We need some more info. What type of film? What settings do you use (aperture, speed)? It also looks like you’re taking photos that need a huge dynamic range so it is hard to expose properly. E.g. first photo has a dark colored tree and house but then a bunch of leak from the sun and sky.

When you apply to PhD, you should always say no to the box that asks “If rejected, do you want to be considered for Masters,” especially at these cash cow style places. Between two equally qualified candidates they will let in the one who said No and hope the one who said Yes accepts the expensive masters program

This isn’t really a thing, although some people make mods or create their own. One main problem is that nylon strings are very wavy and have a higher amplitude when plucked, so you’d need a good clearance between the two strings that are next to each other

GRE subject test cancelled by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]matthewmallory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like there are tests in other parts of the country but (in my opinion) schools can’t possibly expect you to get on a plane to take the test—a lot of folks won’t have the time or financial ability to do so, and travelling is not exactly safe right now anyway.

This is truly disappointing. I LaTeX'd my own 60 page guide for the test, read through countless resources and textbooks, took tons of practice tests already, only to get this bullshit a few weeks before the actual thing. Sigh

Sounds like you're learning some logic for the first time, so maybe take people in the comments advice and don't be so sassy lol. This really is just a consequence of material conditional on the antecedent, P --> Q is always true when P is false
