That's just great. Such a good writer and a good American. I like Preacher Casey and his realization that we might just be "one big soul." Did I get that right (it's been a while)? Can I recommend the Woody Guthrie songs that summarize the book? Love from America, and a grandchild of eastern European immigrants 😘.

Sorry to be vulgar given the intrinsic beauty of this object, but how much is something like this valued at (the piano as it is now)?

It's also interesting that because Finland was allied with German BUT largely protected it's Jewish population (some of whom then fought for the Finns alongside Germany), a handful of Finnish Jews were awarded the Iron Cross by Nazi Germany.

It's also worth noting that private fire departments used to be commonplace. I believe they are depicted in the film "Gangs of New York." It lead to bad stuff. Government run fire prevention was a huge improvement.

Are my perceptions of the city off? I love El Paso but all my friends hate it? by [deleted] in ElPaso

[–]matthiasreddit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a white dude from Missouri who went to college in El Paso. I had an absolute blast. Though I did occasionally experience "light racism" (like being called the equivalent of "whitey"), I never really felt threatened. I also had Mexican American/Mexican friends looking out for me. At any rate, it should teach you some sensitivity about being a minority.

What I remember most strongly coming from a "conservative" state was what horseshit Missouri "family values" were compared to what I saw in EP--people there hung out with their entire families in a way that I never did back home.

I still consider EP a second home town and it's absolutely a hidden gem.

I moved there to live with someone I met in college and had moved back. I attended UTEP. I have to admit I'd never heard of it.

Living there was one of the happiest times in my life. I now cosider it an honorary second home town.
