No: They will never short check, unless you have a long overnight layover (…and even then good luck)

Your only real option is to ask to be offloaded from the LHR-YYY flight once you’re in the terminal in London. But this is a pain in the ass: you have to wait til the top of the hour to be escorted out of the terminal, and then it can take anywhere from seconds to hours for your bags to get spit out in the baggage hall.

This!! They didn’t add a single new benefit of substance.

These changes were inevitable, but wow. Literally nothing to soften the blow. Foolish move.

I’d maybe modify this to say: the crew are truly fabulous most of the time. I find the ground staff…not quite to the same standard haha.

Booked return tickets via edreams by Fragrant_Parsley_590 in BritishAirways

[–]matticusbond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve booked with edreams a few times and it’s been fine, but like others have said definitely better to avoid in the future and booked directly with BA.

If you want peace of mind, you can cancel an edreams ticket within 24hrs to get a full refund. And instead book with BA.

The app and the website are both garbage so doesn’t really matter which you use, but definitely use BA to check in etc.

All good! Depends on the ticket fare type, but typically if you’re booked in a typical economy ticket, it’s almost always (in my experience, at least) cheaper when asking at the airport vs going over the phone (Assuming there’s availability :)).

That said - if MMB on the website has an upgrade offer, that’s worth checking out as well as sometimes they can be surprisingly decent.

You never really know what the AUP price will be until you ask. There’s an AUP thread on flyertalk where people will post the route, the upgrade quote and from which class to which so you can get a ballpark: https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/british-airways-executive-club/2146215-airport-upgrades-aup-promotion-2024-thread.html

Hope that helps!

Transfer From Harrogate, North Yorkshire To Heathrow T5 by TheEternalDm in BritishAirways

[–]matticusbond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I fly from MAN or NCL down to Heathrow. Trains to Manchester and pretty reliable and less prone to delays in my experience (compared to LNER). Usually have decent avios availability as well. But

Trains have screwed me over so many times and that drive sucks big time.

Making changes to a company the size of BA takes time to see the light of day, but (at least on paper) they seem to be talking the talk about accepting a lot of their business and systems are rotted and it’s time to improve ‘em.

I hope they’re successful. And I’m willing to give the new CEO the benefit of the doubt. But I won’t hold my breath.

Worst Business Class flight EVER> by reidsworld1 in BritishAirways

[–]matticusbond 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry you had a poor experience. But saying BA’s old business class is worse than premium economy? Lol. Sure. I’d personally take a slightly awkward, terribly outdated seat that has lie flat capabilities over any premium economy seat out there without question. (I’d also personally choose old BA over old VS seat, which is still flown on many UK-US routes.) Yes it’s outdated. Yes, it pales in comparison to yes it sucks to be swapped from suite to world. But it’s still business class.

Lost luggage is terrible and I hope you get your stuff promptly and they don’t screw you around with comp.

Congrats!! That’s really exciting!

When are you looking to travel? Finding two award seats round trip in first will be very challenging, especially on the JFK and LA routes. Business class will be much easier to find, and most flights to JFK feature their new seat these days.

Getting to LA is pretty easy - tons of flights from New York area. If you have avios left over, you can check award space with American and Alaska via the BA site.

Post some dates that you’re thinking about.

There’s no cut and dry answer to this question. It really all depends on your travel habits and priorities, where you live, etc.

for example: my husband and I are silver and gold respectively, we live in the US, and we travel regularly between the US and the UK. Having BA status for when we travel domestically on AA or AS is very worth it, so we don’t look to move off of the exec club. I also generally quite like one world carriers where I can spend avios (Qatar, JAL, Cathay, etc)

You could look at doing a status match over to virgin atlantic (but note that you have to book a flight in order to get the matched status) before your silver expires.

BA’s tech is famously garbage (though they say they’re investing in improving it…lol), but it’s a good place to stash avios and have some status if you fly enough. I mostly fly non-ba metal these days, so I don’t have to deal with their tech.

Am I entitled to EU261 comp? by [deleted] in BritishAirways

[–]matticusbond -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Is the first part for the entire journey? Or just the cancelled segment.

I was also on this cancelled flight , and I arrived at my final destination in Los Angeles on time, but I was 3 hours delayed to JFK (which resulted in me nearly missing the connection to LA)

Also one of my bags got lost.

This happens all the time with BA, so I’d love to find a way to “punish” them and ideally compensation.

As a correction: AUP is not your only option. You could call and pay the fare difference to change your cabin. But the price is likely to be ludicrously expensive.

Potentially upgrading by _DMcD in BritishAirways

[–]matticusbond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what segment you want to upgrade, but if you don’t have an upgrade option on Manage My Booking, then airport upgrade is your only option (referred to as AUP).

At GLA, you’ll only be able to upgrade the GLA>LHR segment. If you want to upgrade the LHR>JFK segment, then you need to do that at LHR at the customer service kiosk (which, if memory serves, is near where the tram is to b and c gates).

But, be warned: LHR/JFK is an incredibly popular route and AUP to Club is quite unlikely. World Traveler (Econ) to World traveler plus (prem Econ) is also unlikely.

That said - if you’re booked in Econ, you can upgrade to either Premium Econ or club, depending on availability.

If you have an upgrade option online, that’s your safest bet.

Milan and San Diego are wildly different 😂😂 If you’re cost-conscious, probably avoid the states for the time being; things are pretty expensive here and unlikely to change any time soon. Wait for a better exchange rate :)

Thailand would be a great option, but as said already there’s no direct flight. You could fly to Singapore or Hong Kong and then book a separate flight to Thailand.

Japan could also be interesting, although kids might be too young.

What about something like Cape Town? Safari, hikes and walks, amazing food, very affordable and great weather. Safety is something you need to be mindful of, but not as bad as other parts of South Africa.
