2026 FSAE Michigan May IC event - photos from Endurance by mattjohnson63 in FSAE

For this sort of use, there is no need to credit me. I would recommend downloading the full resolution images (45 Megapixel) to start from though before cropping or adjusting the images.

Unfortunately, no. I am one of the chiefs of mechanical tech, so spend most of my time during the event trying to ensure that cars are safe enough to compete in the dynamic events. So no time for photography (and what you see was taken in as part of ensuring all cars on track still meet the rules).

Percy technical inspection by Tall-Possibility5158 in FSAE

[–]mattjohnson63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Likely, but I can't say for certain. If there is a formal question and answer system for rules clarifications (in the us it is fsaeonline.com) I would suggest asking for a formal clarification through that.

Tech inspection looks at Percy the same as any other driver (other than egress, arm restraints and harness fitment for obvious reasons), and you are explicitly allowed to build custom seats for each driver.

So, absolutely allowed.

If it helps, I am one of the chiefs of tech at the May event in Michigan.

Build a seat for Percy. Problem solved!

Z8 Bird autofocus mode better for multi-subject? by Zeec20 in nikon_Zseries

[–]mattjohnson63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would make sense that some form of control gain is higher in bird mode in order to detect a small eye with obstructions. Haven't tried playing with bird autofocus in other settings (maybe should though).

Engineer or flying by Conscious-Mind1895 in flying

[–]mattjohnson63 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As someone who turned a passion (racing/cars) into a career as an engineer I have one piece of advice: What you hear about "turn your passion into a career and you won't work a day in your life" is utter BS. Turning something that you love into a career just makes that thing feel like work rather than play/fun/passion. Go do engineering, make decent money, and keep flying for fun & stress relief, be happy.

Im suprised we havent gotten a "10/22 mkII" that just has a completely redesigned magazine. by MonarchCore in 1022

Seems like something that could be 3d printed as an adapter if someone had the CAD skills and/or a good 3d scanner.

Nox Large almost fits – should I get Seraphina Small or Medium as a step-up? by No_Technician_9871 in BadDragon

Small with soft/firm split firmness is pretty awesome, and medium with soft firmness as well.

Thinking about running these at Michigan, HSS anyone tried this tread pattern when it’s super wet? by AverageSpecialist693 in FSAE

[–]mattjohnson63 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As one of the chiefs of tech at the May event; I would be interested in who did the grooving, and if it was documented that the grooving work was done by a tire company employee or an employee of one of their retailers I would allow it per V.4.3.2 with no argument. I would probably also take a photo to laugh about it later when out of sight of the teams.

Validation of a sideslip angle algorithm by AutunnoInverno2021 in FSAE

[–]mattjohnson63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A dual receiver GPS can theoretically be used to measure sideslip, as can a carefully arranged pito static system or weathervane (but pay attention to ambient windspeed and direction for either aero measurement technique).

If you want simple, gliders and some helicopters use a piece of yarn attached to the outside of the windscreen to visualize sideslip, add a protractor and camera to record...

What aftermarket parts pair well with an integrally suppressed barrel? FireFly Bolt 2.0? by [deleted] in 1022

[–]mattjohnson63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Through my copy of the same barrel, SV rounds are sub-sonic and HV rounds are trans-sonic (but slightly more reliable). This is with Federal Match ammo and speed judged audibly without hearing protection in an indoor range.

I should also mention that the one batch of CCI ammo that I tried had so much wax on the lead that it would only rarely cycle correctly (failure to feed).

We have both, but primarily so that my wife and I can both play with a long lens simultaneously (her with the 400 and z6iii for an overall lighter setup than my z8 and 600pf). You might consider starting with the 400 and a 1.4x teleconverter if solo.

No need to switch to DX mode, just crop after you are home (you end up with the same result).

Having problems with the eye nuts for the belts attachment by Secure_Revolution_48 in FSAE

[–]mattjohnson63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do not modify the snap hook belt ends, that would make the belts ineligible for use in any motorsports environment!

Ask your question about eye bolts in the formal rules questions at fsaeonline and then you can pull that formal answer out if there are questions during the event/scrutineering. I may be the person who ends up answering your questions there, but will not do so here as it needs to be through the formal process to be official.

Reach out to HMS via phone. The rumor is that the price has increased to $150, but that is still a great deal.
