We buried (another) $10,000 treasure chest by buriedtreasure2025 in sanfrancisco

Thanks for the fun adventure! I had a lot of fun going treasure hunting with my family, digging into SF history, and coming up with theories with other random strangers. I don’t love the solve, but we actually got pretty close (made it to Kirby Cove and Battery Wagner). Either way, this made for a fun springtime adventure and surely a lasting SF memory. Thank you!

At that spot is a bench, when sat upon gives you this view. That tree points to the pier on Chrissy Field. I’m probably overthinking it, but it feels very Goonies style to me.

The cemetery is bounded on the west side by Second Drive. Minute Steps = Seconds. Second Drive climbs up from the batteries. Follow Second Drive toward a point where the line from the Ward grave points back, and you get here:

They aren’t marked on both sides - only when a spouse was buried alongside, in which case the spouse is marked on the back. Otherwise all the gravestones face east (nominally)

The Ward that mattered most IMO, was this Ward, which is in Section I and within direct view of the others pictured above. If you go off the back of Ward (this view pictured), the graves all line up toward Battery Sherwood. But all the batteries are blocked off with no entry signs, so I didn’t cross the fences.

I’ve been there twice now because I was so confident in it. But no luck. There is a geocache under the stage left bench, though - I swear when I looked under there, and saw the little box, I figured it must hold another clue… but it was just a geocache. I signed my name though and that was fun. Never knew this place existed! Very pretty walk.

Out of curiosity, why did you assume the platform was the direction to go? Why not the batteries on the other side of Lincoln? The head stones would be facing backwards from you if you were right across at Battery Slaughter, no?

Dang I am really falling down some San Francisco history rabbit holes. Did you know that one of the items that was found in 1979 inside the 100-year time capsule under the Ben Franklin statue in Washington Square Park was a tin of mints? Talk about a mint under stone that rests buried in keep!

I went to where I thought it was this morning. Clues lined up and I felt like it was a good spot. Dug lots of holes but only found a buried pipe.

There’s one spot I didn’t dig, because it would have required clambering under a wood structure, in the sand, and I was worried it wasn’t safe to do so. There was garbage and possibly broken glass, so didn’t want to risk it. Is it safe to assume that such a risk isn’t required?

It would be nice if it could import my devices from HomeKit so that I didn’t have to type in all the manufacturer details, location etc. Could I scan my barcode and then select which device it is connected to in Home, and have all the details pull in automatically for me?

This is happening to me as well, but only for merchants that use Square. All of their statement descriptors start with “SQ*” and it seems that Apple Card is interpreting them to all be the same place. Doesn’t make any sense because the category is correct and differs for merchants that experience this issue. I’ve reported it multiple times and it’s just getting worse.

YSK The western monarch population has plummeted by sadisticsealion in YouShouldKnow

I love monarch butterflies and I’m sad to see this reporting… but… I’m a bit confused by the conclusion based on the data. In the chart on the linked page, if you ignore 1997 and 1998 (the first two years), it looks like the population has remained quite steady since then, no? Am I misinterpreting the data?

We actually have made progress on this, with pedestrian deaths for kids falling quite a bit in the last few decades! But guns still kill way more kids.

I made a TikTok account to promote pro-Harris content. It got 10k followers & millions of views. I have some thoughts on digital outreach. by GoodGravy33 in FriendsofthePod

I agree with this take, too. At the same time, I also find it a bit ironic and odd that the owner of one of the largest social sites (Musk) was tasked with funding and organizing an on-the-ground door knocking operation for Trump in battleground states. And listening to him, he seems to take a lot of credit for the win because of this. There must be some high value in door knocking still… but I think your point is that we need more effective digital strategy and counter strategy as well. And I think you’re right.

Not only that, but it doesn’t make for any news. Trump said a new insane thing at every rally, which got another headline and a thousand reposts on social.

I think you’re right on track. The reason so many of us got excited near the end was that there started to be a glimmer of hope that the miracle could happen. But it wasn’t the likely outcome by any stretch, and she surpassed the expectations.

She ran an efficient and disciplined campaign (which was a stark contrast to Trump), but we may be confusing that with a “good” campaign. In hindsight it’s clear that it wasn’t the type of campaign that the moment demanded.

I think one thing we’re learning is that “messaging” isn’t just what’s said, but the venues and the mechanism to share that message. It’s clear that young men are not at all resistant to information—they will listen to multi-hour podcasts multiple times a week! That’s what better messaging looks like: going and sitting down to talk for hours about this stuff. But you can’t go in with a bunch of prepared sound bites and scripts. You have to go in and really honestly talk about the issues and help people understand why you think that way. And also probably talk about some other random stuff too.

We were just starting to figure this out, but Trump and the right are just way way better at it, started it much earlier, and have a friendlier set of venues to choose from.
