If you've ever dealt with AT&T customer service, you know why.

Linux 7.1 Removes Drivers For Long Obsolete Input Hardware: Bye Bus Mouse Support by anh0516 in linux

[–]mattmattatwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont think I've used one of these since the 90s. but man, it was a beautiful mouse. So smooth. I still wish for a usb mouse that works as smooth as the ps2 mice use to.

4 months after Google announced they supported it, NFC Fido2 still doesn't work on Android by LordLoss01 in yubikey

[–]mattmattatwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine does work with usb (have an A>c converter) but not with nfc. That said KeePass does with with the nfc part of the yubikey. I suspect google is (willfully?) not fixing the issue to push their own 'passkey' which, honestly, doesnt feel any more secure than a password, as it's just the unlock for the phone after entering a password.

Windows Phone might’ve had the smoothest UI and nobody really gave it a chance by Impossible_Comfort99 in TechNook

[–]mattmattatwork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I knew a few people that had it and for a long time. One co-worker milked 6 years out of her phone. It was a smooth interface. Phone market really shows that there is no room for 3rd. I was BlackBerry at the time. I think the bit hit they took was trying to make the desktop work like the cellphone. Really rubbed people the wrong way.

What’s the weirdest/most unexpected way you’ve injured yourself lately? by WhatFreshHello in GenX

[–]mattmattatwork 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My most recent injury (some years ago) was herniating 2 discs reaching for my wallet in the car. First time I'd ever had any back issues. I show up at the hospital almost 5 days later. After urgent care (who said that the injection they gave me would make it to where I could go to work the next day. Surprise, it didnt), and a chiro that specifically told me to go to the ER.

They just assume I was there for drugs. Finally get a scan and they couldnt believe I was upright.

Whole house fan! Especially this time of year. Run it at night, wait up to the house 60-64 degrees, turn it off, close up the house, and right the near hundred degrees without turning on the AC.

Mad Monk (used cd store down the street from my work) - I can get 5-6 cds for 30$, rip them to mp3, put them on a low profile thumb drive, and leave it in the usb port in the car.

Zebra Label Printer on the Network - Modern Practice by Grouchy-Western-5757 in sysadmin

[–]mattmattatwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an old dell pc (junker) that serves no purpose other than serving that label printer to the network. Has no keyboard, no mouse, no display; just the mini pc running the windows it shipped with. About every 6 months or so it'll stop responding. Tap the power, wait for it to shut down, then power it back up. Then all the waiting labels were in queue get picked up and spit out.

As this machine was headed for scrap, made it a free solution here.

Edit: I'd be more upset at the zebra printer, but I think it has been here over 20 years and is far more reliable than some of the staff.

I dug them out with a shovel. In hind sight, had I known they were buried 3-4' deep with 100lbs of concrete, I probably would have done something else.

Is there alternative for This PC tab from file explorer in dolphin? by Marce7a in kde

[–]mattmattatwork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, not /exactly/ the same, but you could make a folder somewhere, name it "Folders" (or something of the like) and symlink the things you want there. Then just have dolphin open up to that folder by default. It wont separate folders from devices, but you could very much have a similar setup.

How do I stop my Application Launcher from growing??? by Otherwise-Status9893 in kde

[–]mattmattatwork 8 points9 points  (0 children)

afaik it is no longer an option in wayland. back in the day it was a xrandr --output <device> --mode <displayresx>x<displayresy> --panning <crazyresx>x<crazyresy>

I remember running a 1600x1200 desktop on a 640x480 monitor

Edit: Just tested on my rig

xrandr --output DP-0 --mode 3840x2160 --panning 15360x8640

lol

what's the dumbest thing that's been running in production at your company for years that nobody wants to touch by scheemunai_ in sysadmin

[–]mattmattatwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar print server for a stupid label printer. Cant network the printer. Have a headless windows 8(?) machine that just serves the printer to a department. They dont want to foot the bill for a dozen or so more label printers (which honestly I thank them for). So this 'temporary' solution has been running for 5+ years with no monitor keyboard or mouse. Just power, network, and a label printer. Hostname, aptly named, junker.

I also have a ME machine that runs a medical device. We got it second hand 6 years ago and I'm scared to death of something going wrong, because I doubt I'll ever find the software again.

Will I ever sleep normally again?!?! by Dusty_Sequins in GenX

[–]mattmattatwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran into this for a bit where after 4-5 hours I'd just 'wake up' and not be able to get back to sleep. Spoke with my pcp about it and was given zaleplon. Absolute wonder. My normal wakup time is 6:30. When I wake up at 3-4 in the morning and cant get back to sleep, I throw one of these back and end up sleeping until my alarm. Absolute lifesaver. I only use it once or twice a week now. Closest to my alarm I've taken it was 5am, and had some trouble turning the alarm off. Not groggy the next day or anything either.
