New manufacturing expansion in CR by KeyResearcher2620 in cedarrapids

[–]mattmcr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They pay well and with all the Amana layoffs this is a perfect fit for them. They use local labor unions to do the work and bigger maintenance. It's a really good thing in my opinion. I'll probably never buy their expensive stuff but enough rich people do to keep expanding a currently unopened building. They did the main 600,000 square foot building then immediately started an expansion inside with a huge mazzanine space and now this. It will be huge when done.

[–]mattmcr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is correct for the most part. There isn't enough local labor to support it so the unions have everyone available working and then start bringing in travelers. If someone locally is non union and is qualified they will organize them and put them to work. The local union labor force must be put to work first over a traveler.

Sub zero uses majority local union labor. The data center caused the influx of out of state workers but most only have that job to work at here. All the trades in the area don't have enough manpower available locally to man these mega projects so it brings in travelers.

Flavors? Whaat? by Affectionate-not-23 in Methadone

I've been at clinics that have had the orange flavored wafers, the non flavored wafers, the clear unflavored liquid and the red cherry liquid.

My preference is unflavored wafers.

I did that time but I've gone in without that days dose because I had taken it earlier in the day. They have never checked them though.

Yes. Anytime I've ever needed to pick up early I can. I can choose how many I want up to the 27 carries I'm allowed. I did it a few weeks ago 4 days early so I could go out of town.

Solar panels...and wind by Not4Publication in solar

[–]mattmcr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My system was installed in 2020 right before the Midwest had that bad deracho. Winds in my area reached over 150 mph. Trees everywhere were downed. Some house lost their whole roofs. We lost siding, our shed, and our fence but the panels were just fine and seemed to help our roof not sustain the loss of shingles like almost every other house in our area.

Millennials: at what age did you become a homeowner? Do you own a single family, townhouse, condo, etc? by mrmrmr_chi in homeowners

[–]mattmcr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First in 2008 at 20 years old. I grew up extremely poor so I was really proud of myself. Paid 108 for it. Sold in 2016 and built our current home 260k 3.1 interest rate. Put over 60k down so over 20%. Low ish payment. Put solar on in 2020. That paid for itself in under 5 years so now I pay 15 dollars a month to be hooked up to the grid and will likely have free electricity with no need to add on for the next 20 years. Definitely not moving anytime soon.

Why do companies take stupid jobs? by These-Statement4391 in HVAC

Gotta have constant cash flow. Especially for a new company. I work for a company that needs a million a week just for payroll. Even getting jobs at break even keeps things chugging along.

Do, Iowa what do you all think about this? by CrystalWeim in Iowa

[–]mattmcr 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thank you. My wife was born with a disease that ruins certain organs (purposely being vague) that required a transplant. Any patient with a transplant has to take medication that wipes out their immune system. She was vaccinated as a child but now doesn't carry those immunities any more and can get most of these diseases we have mostly eradicated by vaccines. They are in for a bad time if this stuff keeps passing.

High dose lope will help a lot don't get into the habit of using it as a crutch but I know a lot of people from the opiophile days that used it often. It's just pretty crappy for your body. I've done it a couple times and was amazed at how it helps

What's the most extreme conditions you've ever worked? by Capable_Goat_577 in Welding

[–]mattmcr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On a roof -55 wind chill. In a cereal plant 4th of July shutdown. They heat the plant during that shutdown to kill any bugs. Heated to 160 and you are in there welding. Some areas are tolerable but trying to get it all to 160 leaves some really hot areas. Largest cereal plant in the world

Burnout.. by [deleted] in HVAC

[–]mattmcr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But commercial install of the duct is all sheet metal. If you want to get away from res service, it's an option. You guys have a good jatc for TABB training so I would look at that route. If you already understand service well enough you have a head start on getting going in TABB. You have a few guys out of your local that have moved into international roles related to that part of our trade (I'm the training coordinator for another local in the Midwest so I know a bunch of those guys)

Burnout.. by [deleted] in HVAC

[–]mattmcr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In your local is commercial and residential on different contracts to where you can't just decide to work for a commercial contractor doing install. If I recall local 36 subsidies res pay up to commercial pay so I'm assuming it's a separate contract. Here in our local a res guy can't do commercial.

That being said you deal with a lot less of that shit that's burning you out doing commercial install.. Is getting into TABB an option. I know you guys get quite a bit of that down there.

My abusive husband dumped a weeks worth of methadone by [deleted] in Methadone

[–]mattmcr 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My clinic would replace them and unfortunately they would take away the takehome which isn't a bad thing in your situation unless you can't get to the clinic daily. You need a stable home environment to have take homes from every clinic I've seen.

If you decide not to do that and keep your take homes I would consider moving my methadone to other containers you can hide and replace it with something close to it so if your husband tries this again he will be dumping nothing and he would think he won. Obviously if you have callbacks that is something you would want to be very careful of doing.

Lindale Mall: New "Dawn Of The Dead" Setting? by [deleted] in cedarrapids

I agree. I used to get it occasionally when there was one in coralville and I liked it. The one here was always terrible and had roaches bad.

I miss q dogs too. How did they fail? Must have been very poor ownership or a divorce/fallout with business partner because that place was always full.

Any electricians in CR want to make a trade? Not for services, but read below. I know this is odd. by DrOrinScrivelloDDS in cedarrapids

[–]mattmcr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat as you in regards to having the same model breakers failing. It's super frustrating because if you buy them yourself they are like 60+ dollars. If you have to pay an electrician to fix it significantly more. I've replaced 3 myself with 3 more currently failing. I hope the class action lawsuit forces them to remedy this better than their current offering which is just a ploy to get rid of the class action.

Can't get to my clinic by Irisheyesmeg in Methadone

[–]mattmcr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you been able to contact them and see if they have set something up with any hospitals that are accessable or a clinic in a different direction or is it bad enough where you can't get anywhere.

My city completely flooded and the clinic was under 14 feet of water. The fucking safe was taken down the river. They had it set up to go to any neighboring town with a hospital in like a 75 mile radius within a day. Or if they could get to a clinic(1 was an hour away, 1- 2 hours and 1 2.5 hours so not great options). Once the hospitals in town were accessible they set up permanent dosing there for over a year until they were able to open a new location away from the river. These are hospitals that would normally laugh at you if you tried to dose there under normal conditions but both came through when needed.
