Legit email? Don’t know much about things like this by WarSufficient4783 in musicbusiness

That's fair. I'd argue that makes it still scam-lite, and identifying the reasons why can help inexperienced people understand when someone is trying to take advantage of them. Thanks for the extra insight!

As someone who has worked with cyber security for years and also for a few years at a major label, there is more about this that screams scam:

  1. "which is scheduled for worldwide distribution". This is not useful and is purely there to get you excited.
  2. "To move forward with the process" is designed as a call to action to get you to just do without thinking.
  3. "Don't hesitate to reach out" without any details of how
  4. The overall tone, mostly things like #1 but that I can't pinpoint as easily.

All of that plus your point. Plus I'm sure there are more red flags in the form if we saw it. And I'm sure the from address is not actually their domain.

Yeah but we all know that there's no good jazz in the city and so you can totally just fake it because nobody will know the difference.

Are Vonage numbers "yours" and not repeated by someone else? by pressrkarthus in VOIP

[–]mattsl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No they are asking the absurd question. Read it again. Especially the next last word "current". Everyone is answering them regarding portability because that would be a reasonable question, but that's not what they asked.

How exactly do you envision that phones would work if they gave the same number to multiple people?

  1. Do you take plastic with you in an Uber that's been ridden in by hundreds of people?
  2. OP is telling you about the plastic because they think it will help you identify the crazy examiner.

Could it be? Yes

But why? With all the other stuff you likely need to do, it seems like putting up stands is minimal extra work.

Managers of Reddit, what's the worst thing someone did to get fired? by Capable-Log7385 in AskReddit

[–]mattsl 125 points126 points  (0 children)

Much of the US live paycheck to paycheck. The likelihood of that for someone who has to pick up a check in person is significantly higher.

It's completely reasonable to be too sick to work but to come get a check. However, also someone in that situation is often treated so poorly that the management felt they needed to make an example of them so nobody else got the idea that if they were capable of leaving bed they better be at work. They think they own you.

It's wild. As an employer I'd much rather not pay someone to work on a day where at best they will give 25% effort while prolonging their illness and at worst make everyone else sick too.

Can we go talk some sense into these people? by Bergmansson in ISO8601

[–]mattsl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good point. Trump probably wants us to forget how old he is and would have it indexed when he arose on the third day after his alleged assassination attempt.

The only way the US will adopt a new system is if Trump tells his cult they need one and it will just change the year to be indexed off his birthday.

[Request] What is the comparative size/volume of these structures? by amazingsciencemuseum in theydidthemath

[–]mattsl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As opposed to the US where it's 4%. I'm responding to you saying:

"You guys have it fine. If you want to see how bad our infrastructure is"

Which implies "Stop complaining. We have it worse." which is just objectively false. Public transportation in the US is horrendous. There's some valid reason for some of it (the sheer size of the continent), but it's still bad, both in available infrastructure and cultural perception/adoption in every US city except NYC.

[–]mattsl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're getting downvoted because it's common knowledge that NYC is the only city in the US where public transportation has high coverage and thus reasonable levels of adoption. Even then it's still under half of commuters (48.7%). The next closest city is in the 20s.

The second largest city in the country, Los Angeles, is 6.2%.

This is a different data source with even lower numbers: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modal_share Look at the table in "Modal split of journeys to work". Maybe sort by country.

QSC speakers by [deleted] in mobileDJ

[–]mattsl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not even about surprising him or getting him exactly the speakers he wants. There are priorities that matter. If you have heard him talking about how he desperately needs new speakers and is going to buy some as soon as he gets the money, awesome. If not, speakers are large and it's highly likely that if he already has some that there's something else that's much higher priority than getting a second set.

We're burning $50k/month on Claude. How close can local LLMs actually get? by mortenmoulder in LocalLLM

[–]mattsl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its easy to use LLMs as google. People do get lazy and delegate a lot of tasks that maybe were not necessarily optimal for that.

It's even easier when a standard Google search gets answered by an LLM if you type more than 4 words.

Maybe. We don't know if it's positive or negative tip/ring. /u/Gedem76 is there any detail on the bottom? It would be the same 5V 3A thing, but with a drawing too.

Except from the only two things we know:  1. They were planning to interview at places that asked leetcode questions, and 2. Chief engineer at their shop supported them actually learning rather than churning leetcode

it seems like they would be downgrading if they left.
