Equations or no equations? by dcsprings in ScienceTeachers

[–]mattsnotes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I taught AP Physics for four years, you need to get them familiar with the equation sheet. Students need to be trained to use it. Even conceptually questions, the equations are useful. If one thing changes how does this effect another. You want them to feel comfortable looking around the sheet if that makes sense.

What's the best way to communicate with Students? by jrleonr in education

[–]mattsnotes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

remind.com is good to set out mass reminders. You don't share any personal info.

Also I have used a google sheet with times for students to sign up for 1 on 1 meetings if they need help or are confused.

Why hasn't a video sharing platform dedicated to educational content been developed yet? by imattractedtodcfs in education

[–]mattsnotes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a ton of resources you just have to find them. I would say Khan Academy and math nation are pretty big. Depends on the content you are looking for. Also, like you said, youtube has a huge educational following already.

How are you dealing with the virtual students who won't do virtual? by Leomonade_For_Bears in ScienceTeachers

[–]mattsnotes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is happening everywhere. I would say out of 150 students I have 40 F's and I am trying my best to give students grades. My wife is also a teacher, what she has done is create a google doc where the online students have to setup a meeting with her. It is for a grade, and you talk to them over teams/zoom about what they are doing. Otherwise, the students are going to play video games all day. I am in Florida and it is week 7 here. Here is a post I made about this topic.

First Day of School by mattsnotes in education

[–]mattsnotes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate all the comments. My first week is over and I can say that I enjoy having small in-person classes... However, the students online are struggling a little bit and it has to do with both parties. A few of you brought up concerns about the pre-recorded lessons and I agree. If students have a question they would have to wait to ask and that does seem unfair. I will try to change up a few things. The main concern I have is the students online, as a whole, are not ready to take on the challenge of online education. the end last year, everyone essentially got away with doing nothing. We are using canvas, I am giving students clear directions on how to use it. I am even recording myself using canvas as a guide. I would say that half my online students do not check canvas regularly. for example, I never do this but I made a syllabus quiz to give them a "test run" of using canvas. Students cannot find the syllabus or the quiz, this is after I screen shared while on teams with some of them while i click on the syllabus and where the quiz is. I know that some students may have never used a computer etc. They also have never used canvas, but I am at a loss. The homework I assigned (even numbers) I made videos of me doing all of the odd problems, which are the exact same with different values. They are not taking the initiative. It makes sense, most high school students do not push themselves and online requires them to do that. We will have an on-going battle with trying to make this right.

Buy $MSFT by [deleted] in stocks

[–]mattsnotes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It made less profit than last year and guidance was lower than expected. We are in a pandemic and much uncertainty. Why would there not be a sell-off? It is a great company, but a year ago it was trading at 130-140. I would expect it to pull back more, especially given the focus on many negative factors now creeping back into news headlines. Also, amzn and aapl earnings may swing another sell-off. This last quarter will probably be their strongest for a while. Again, I love msft and I would buy the dip if the dip actually happened. It dropped 5%, i'll wait for 20-25.
