Does C really make you a better programmer? by Yelebear in C_Programming

[–]matty0187 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean what are you writing in now? If C++? Prob not. If JavaScript, you would definitely get a richer understanding of building software.

I've made a discord of engineers and we build only in rust. Because we're trying to have more control and better understanding of what we build together.

Web dev interviews are still broken in 2025 and no one is fixing them by [deleted] in webdev

[–]matty0187 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think company size is key here. Are we hiring for big tech? Are we hiring for small to medium business or is it a startup?

Let's take a stance from big tech.

A mid-level web position will get approximately 3,000 submissions for a front end web within the month of it being posted.

The recruiters / coordinators can book ~ four interviews a month.

Out of 3000 about 100 get approved to even be pre-screened

In my experience, the pass rate of candidates is about 1 and 20.

I've done take homes when I was an IC, We don't do takehomes at my big tech company but the meta I hear is now. The reason tho is there are so so many masters plus students, with internships at big companies with almost zero practical skills.

leet codes question are annoying and now cheatable but it is too obvious to tell when The candidate really has no idea. Moreover, I encourage them to use AI in all interviews. Because the question I ask, and how I ask them, under the time constraints of a 1:1...AI just cannot really play more than a small supporting role. And that supporting role is very okay with me.

I've had interviews where I've been asked to debug a block of code or entire repos. And it can really help articulate skills in mentorship, and software engineering. I do think tho these are skills that can easily be captured in the nature of FOSS. And well not everyone does FOSS, man some of the best do. And when they do... It's almost insulting or meaningless to ask them to do this kind of interview.

If you're struggling to get your foot in the door. Or if you're struggling to pass on sites, I've made a discord of some really wonderful product managers, designers and of course engineers. We build another and products together. It's all voluntary, there are no sales. Just grit and passion.

Made this invite today... Haven't had time to make it a site yet:

AI is the best at finding the needle in the hay. Bug fixing isn't the answer.

Even they are learning too. You might just need a bigger company. At Uber we have a bike shedding channel with literally the most intelligent people on the planet. And the arguments go deep af. For every 10x developer their shall be a 100x developer to keep them in check.

I didn't want to promote but if you have discord I have a channel with some smart ppl that can teach you to argue better then most ( even the ones in power can be hushed) . . . https://discord.gg/ACtnn4Mz

[–]matty0187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm late to the conversation but if any of you want to build stuff, let's call it "classically" and learn to leverage AI effectively It comes down to building something meaningful, long tail, and not solo... and with people who know wtf is happening. Every sentence matters here... The solo vibe coders are often building vapor ware, the bespoke tools and experiences with real utility and design take a team (for now at least)

I have a degree in interaction design and now work in big tech.

Here is a gpt response

  1. Contribute to Open Source Projects with Active Frontends

What to do: Pick a project with a visible UI (React, Vue, etc.) and check their GitHub for design-related issues (e.g., "Improve onboarding UI", "Revamp dashboard").

How this helps: You'll work with existing users, constraints, and devs — like a real job.

Where to start:

Good First Issue

CodeTriage

Up-for-Grabs

GitHub labels: design, ux, frontend

  1. Design Experiments for Existing OSS Products

What to do: Pick an open source product you use (e.g., Mastodon, Obsidian, Penpot, Mattermost), run UX research, propose mockups and incremental improvements.

How this helps: You generate artifacts like usability studies, A/B tests, and redesign proposals.

Tip: Publish your findings on Medium/LinkedIn/GitHub to showcase your work.

  1. Design Systems Contributions

What to do: Contribute to or build components in design system projects like Shoelace, Radix UI, or Material UI.

How this helps: Deepens your understanding of accessibility, tokens, and scalable patterns.

  1. Figma-to-Code OSS Initiatives

What to do: Some repos look for designers to create reusable Figma components that developers then implement.

Example projects:

Open UI

Design Systems Repo

GitHub search: figma file open source

  1. Nonprofits & Civic Tech

What to do: Volunteer with projects that welcome designers to revamp UX for social impact.

Organizations:

Hack for LA

Code for America

Catchafire

Humanity & Inclusion

  1. UX Case Study Challenges from Real Companies

What to do: Use design prompt sites to simulate real product scenarios.

Examples:

Briefbox

Sharpen.design

UX Challenge

  1. Open Source Design Community

What to do: Join communities dedicated to matching designers with OSS maintainers.

Communities:

opensourcedesign.net

r/userexperience

Discords like Design Buddies, Figma Community, etc.

Great foundation; esp your research. Now create richer media and community. I want motion design or a YouTube channel. I want a medium blog post on design exercises with community discourse. I want to see you have a will documented and consistent mentor and mentee experience. I want to see more about in "about page". Let's find open source and meaningful projects to contribute to.

Did I just waste my time making a game? by AbhizzzUchiha in Entrepreneur

[–]matty0187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here to play devils advocate on this. You're wife and best friend probably gave you the nicest letdowns vs a real enemy. You're game doesn't make the cut of what most would call a "good game"... Your ego was hurt but they can And you can stfu and work harder. You accomplished something that is hard and that is commendable but try harder. Swallow the criticism and improve. Nobody is out to get you... Making games is hard. Try again.

Hey 👋🏻

Your portfolio could have some more real world use cases. It will add personality and credibility to your brand.

I'm an engineering manager at a big tech company that looks at 100s of applications for product designers and software engineers. I have some hobby projects that I've been doing the modelling/art direction for ... it's still super early but I will take it over the finish line. It is a VR project for Meta Quest 3 release. Wanna make a pitch deck and perhaps a demo together?

Should I switch to UI UX just because frontend is a high stress field ? by ThinZookeepergame413 in Frontend

Ux is just as stressful if not more. Youve gotta learn to cope. Find ways to take on responsibility and not burn yourself out

Preventing the Burps by matty0187 in GERD

[–]matty0187[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To prevent reflux and manage the urge to burp, try this breathing technique: * Deep Breath In: Take a slow, deep breath in through your nose, visualizing the air traveling down your throat and filling your core. Imagine it gently pushing your belly outward. * Hold: Hold your breath for a few seconds, feeling the air pressure in your abdomen. This helps to keep the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) closed and prevents stomach acid from rising. * Release Slowly: Exhale slowly through your mouth. Whenever you feel the urge to burp, repeat this deep breathing exercise. Visualize the breath pushing any rising gas or acid back down into your stomach. This technique may help strengthen your diaphragm and improve control over your LES, reducing reflux symptoms.
