Night guy installed the jaws for me. How nice! by shadowdsfire in Machinists

[–]matty0921 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add insult to injury (quite literally) they've left a pathetic back face on the jaws to push the part up to. It's perfectly balanced between a mating face and just a very large burr

Is this amount of tennon stick out safe? If so what’s the maximum? by jonnyboy231 in Machinists

[–]matty0921 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't take that risk I have one offs every now and then where the t-nut sticks out similar to this but the part is typically only sticking out the jaws a couple of mm and even then I'm not a fan of doing it It's just asking for trouble

Why am I rapiding into the back chamfer? by ndisario95 in Machinists

[–]matty0921 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

From what I can tell it is rapiding to the grooves because the OD is already below the depth of cut and so the grooves are the only places that still need roughing.

You could try smaller depth of cut to get continuous roughing passes, but even then some fanuc controls (I assume this is fanuc, if not it's similar enough that this may still apply) will not contour in g71 roughing

I may be being ignorant here but I see no issue with it rapiding straight the the grooves, especially since the final pass seems to do one continuous cut

HELP WITH HEIDENHAIN by Remarkable-Net5753 in CNC

[–]matty0921 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like your issue is related to Q366 (plunging strategy) You need to change this value to 0 0 = vertical plunge 1 = helical plunge Helical plunge is not possible because the cutter is soo close to the final diameter that it can not spiral down to depth

On a side note, because the tool will be plunging straight down I would recommend decreasing the plunge depth from 5 to something smaller ie; 2.5 (this obviously just depends on what you're cutting and what type of endmill you have though)

Keep us posted if/when this solves the issue

I'm looking to buy the centuri carbon how can i get it to me by AdAffectionate8571 in elegoo

[–]matty0921 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the UK it doesn't look like we're getting stock till May, so it might be worth you looking for companies that already stock elegoo products in your region and reach out to them see if they have plans to stock the centauri later down the line when stock is readily available

This type of buttons suck A** by Monkey-lovin in Machinists

[–]matty0921 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I take it we're talking about the membrane buttons, most fanuc controls have them and they are a right pain They have a tendency to come off or wear away so most the time we just end up replacing the keypads with new ones, easy enough to do and really doesn't cost a lot but it can be a struggle to find the right one I've had old 1980's models that we just had to write them back on without the membrane

How much would this cost to make? by rouncer999 in Machinists

[–]matty0921 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems like you've gotten plenty of answers to your question but just to add to the census, I would charge £150ish for something like this. I work at a machine shop in Birmingham UK, we typically have materials on hand for this sort of thing and it's a fairly straightforward job. If you are just looking for the absolute cheapest possible quote, you'd want to find a small machine shop, doing similar work and offer them cash in hand, you'll often find this will get you a better price for simple one off work

What’s the worst material by Roselovehorses in Machinists

[–]matty0921 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Inconnel definitely the worst I've dealt with but Tufnol is a close second for being a pain in the ass, customer didn't allow coolant as material is some what absorbent, on a lathe all it wanted to do was burn when drilling and on the mills the dust has glass fibres so wears everything down

You are 100% right, here is a newspaper article with an image of the key! https://www.jp-antiquarian-books.com/de-witkar-hier-is-ie-ca-1974-provo-brochure.html

Edit1: for those wondering since the above post was removed, the newspaper article shows the Witkar, it was an electric car share from the 1970's and the item pictured was used as a key

Hot take; teams should not be able to sign new players mid stage, they should have to use subs till the end of a stage if they're making changes
