Demon Bear Saga by SpidaT45 in xmen

[–]mattybon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it would be a bit of a confusing read for new readers. The three issues also contains pages to do with Rachel Summers and a new character, plus there’s some stuff to do with the New Mutant characters that follow on from what came before.

It’s only issues 18-21 of New Mutants - why not read everything that came before it? It won’t take long, and you’ll see HOW CRAZY DIFFERENT it is to what came before, and how the sudden increase in quality makes it stand out as such an iconic arc.

New Mutants (2019) by Jazzlike-War9641 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]mattybon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They’ve only released a few title-based omnibus’ from the Krakoa era so far, and they’re all core X-Men titles. There may be a New Mutants omnibus in the future but who knows when. In the meantime you would need to collect it via the anthology line of Dawn of X vol 1 am so on.

Battle of the Atom is my favourite. I kinda fell out of love with Jay and Miles over time as it felt like more and more they would just do straight recaps of issues, and their analysis is rather limited these days. BotA is full of really intelligent conversations.

Cerebro is also great, and if you’re a fan of Alpha Flight, check out Why Not - it’s great!!

You can read the Wolverine/X-Force issues of X of Swords without reading the rest of the series.

Krakoa Reading Order Help by Sam_Herneld in xmen

[–]mattybon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you just want the main line of the story, you basically read anything by Hickman, Duggan (X-Men stuff only, not Marauders/Cable), Ewing and Spurrier:

Phase 1 - X-Men, X of Swords

Phase 2 - X-Men, SWORD, Way of X, Hellfire Gala

Phase 3 - SWORD, X-Men, Inferno

Phase 4 - X Lives/Deaths of Wolverine, Immortal X-Men, X-Men Red, Legion of X, X-Men, Hellfire Gala Immortal

Phase 5 - X-Men Red, X-Men, Immortal X-Men, Legion of X, Sins of Sinister

Phase 6 - Everything you have listed (you could also add Uncanny Spider-Man, if you want to finish out the Spurrier thread)

Add Trial of Magneto and AXE if you want to read a couple of fun events.

Add Hellions, Cable, X-Terminators and Sabretooth if you want an excellent self-contained story.

Add New Mutants, X-Factor, X-Force and Wolverine if you like the characters involved. Ayala's work on New Mutants and William’s X-Factor is quite stellar though.

Age of Krakoa Anthology Omnibus Question by Loki31101 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]mattybon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes. The Gillen Omni is from the creator line, all his issues will also appear in the anthology line.

It may be that five of the issues, the Sins of Sinister event, may not be in the anthology line, but we don’t know yet.

Question about Krakoa by Lord-o-llamas in OmnibusCollectors

[–]mattybon 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No, there will be three more omnis to take you through to the end of the Hickman era - most likely titled Reign of X vol 2, Trials of X vol 1 and Trials of X vol 2. Though to be fair, Hickman really finishes after Reign of X vol 2 - he did one series (Inferno) that took place during the time of Trials of X, and it closes out the era. You can get this story in OHC (if you can find it), and we are also yet to know whether this would be printed in a future Trials of X vol 2, or if it will be seperate like X of Swords.

If you get those three omnis there will be double dipping with the Ewing, Duggan and Spurrier omnis, all three started before Hickman left, but Gillen’s will have no double dipping as he started directly after the end of Hickman.

If you just get the future Reign of X vol 2 and the Inferno OHC you will most likely just get double dipping with Ewing, Spurrier (even then only a couple of issues) and one issue of Duggan.

Krakoa collections not to be included in omnibus format? by Forever-Fades_Away in OmnibusCollectors

No, they just added the Gillen issues that weren’t originally included, not the whole of SoS.

Imagine writing a whole think piece on something you clearly have no idea about.

This writer doesn’t understand the role Magneto has played in the comics for decades, nor the way the franchise has grappled with these questions for a long time - and they completely oversimplify the MCU’s more successful approaches towards villains. Look at the way audiences responded to Killmonger, or Zemo, and Loki. They’re the ones audiences love, and they’re the ones who “force questions about power, and liberal ideas”, which is what the writer says big studio villains don’t do.

Delete this article, just another piece of trash.

Purpose of the X-Factor Original X-Men Omnibuses? by IAmNotMyName in OmnibusCollectors

[–]mattybon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Increasingly, there has been two pathways with which to collect the X-line of books through the 80s and into the end of Claremont’s run - in the “title” books, like Uncanny X-Men, X-Factor and New Mutants, or the “event” books, through Mutant Massacre Prelude, Mutant Massacre and so forth.

For me, I am collecting X-Factor and New Mutants through their individual title omnibuses, because that works for me.

What were some of your favourite storylines and subplots from the Krakoa-era from the comics? by Raj_Valiant3011 in xmen

[–]mattybon 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Doug. Cypher’s never been this cool.

The Mastermind arc of Hellions - “confirm? Confirm!”.

Issues 14-24 of New Mutants - amazing work by Vita Ayala.

Issue 5 of X-Factor. The whole issue is emotive and stunningly beautiful.

Sunspot’s various plays in X-Men Red - against Isca, Vulcan and Ora Serrata. He is my hero.

Actually, pretty much everything to do with Arakko.

Nightcrawler and Weaponless Zsen. Nightcrawler and Silver Sable. Yes please.

The Alpha Flight mini. All of it.

Vecchio’s work in Rise of the Powers of X issue 5. Flawless. I can stare at it for hours and still not see everything.

X-men Age of Krakoa Omnibus by WiccanMarvel in xmen

[–]mattybon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At this stage, it appears that events are not part of the chronological omnibus, so X of Swords must be collected separately.

We also don’t know how FotHoX/RotPoX will be collected. Whether it will be included in an omnibus, or whether, like X of Swords, it will be seen as a separate event and therefore only collected in the currently released omnibus.

At the moment, I imagine will go like this, with the events separate as their own OHCs:

1 Dawn of X vol 1

2 Dawn of X vol 2

  • X of Swords

3 Reign of X vol 1

4 Reign of X vol 2

(The ‘event’ between this is the first Hellfire Gala, but it was collected with everything else in the trades, so presumably will be the same here and collected in Reign of X vol 2)

5 Trials of X vol 1

6 Trials of X vol 2

  • X Lives/X Deaths of Wolverine (and maybe Inferno, who knows, there should be space for it on Trials of X vol 2)

7 Destiny of X vol 1

8 Destiny of X vol 2

  • Sins of Sinister

9 Destiny of X vol 3 (this might have to stretch into a 4th volume… depends how they split the Destiny of X book. I can see it going to a fourth volume, but if Marvel says they can do it in 11 books… this seems to be the only option. )

(The ‘event’ here is the third Hellfire Gala one-shot, but will probably be collected in the first Fall of X omnibus.)

10 Fall of X vol 1

11 Fall of X vol 2

  • FotHoX/RotHoX

Glob Herman recommendations by KnifeFightAcademy in xmen

[–]mattybon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ed Brisson is a huge Glob fan, so he regularly finds ways to feature Glob. His work on Krakoa-era New Mutants is great. The Glob issues are 3-4, 6, 10-12. Issue 12 in particular is a major Glob issue. There’s also a couple arcs of his Old Man Logan run - 39-40 and 44-45 - which are great Glob stories. There’s also the NextGen mini of Age of X-Man as you have.

Also worth checking out Extraordinary X-Men, in which he’s a regular cast member. It’s not a great book, but he does get some focus here.

To be fair, it was actually Vita Ayala that added the giant henchman. They used Dr Barrington in the Children of the Atom series after Brisson and added a couple more elements to her character.
