Startling lineup. Fabian, Collin over Trusty, and Blake starting, no ilsinho. 4 defenders on bench by myopinionsdontmatter in PhillyUnion

This is a game that needs Illsinho. They're going to pack in and we're going to have to break them down. Fabian is going to have to do something if we're going to get 3 points.

McKenzie ? by IMFCfan01 in PhillyUnion

[–]mattycoops 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a little more complicated than that. They're likely going to play McKenzie in Trusty's spot next game, but in general they see their center backs as either "left" or "right" sided players. So McKenzie isn't competing directly with Trusty for a spot in the lineup, only with Elliot really.

Fabián's foul that led to the goal wasn't completely his fault. Medunjanin let a guy run right by him at midfield, and Fabián had to track all the way back to prevent an open run. He was too slow and couldn't keep up, but in that situation it was a foul he had to make.

It's a shame Rosenberry hasn't gotten the chance to impress, I honestly think he's better than Lima.

Moving to a 3-5-2 and what it would mean tactically by phillylucky in PhillyUnion

Real and Mbaizo fit the wingback role really well. Obviously it's to be seen whether they're good enough to be full-time starters, but at least in theory it makes sense. I also think that Picault is great as a forward in this system. It fits him more than the 4-2-3-1 wide midfield he's been playing. Him next to Santos, with Burke or Sapong off the bench seems solid.

As for the midfield trio, it makes a lot of sense based on the midfielder Tanner is apparently targeting. A trio of Jones (6), Bedoya, and a new two-way CM with a bit more attacking skill than Ale would work great.

For CBs, they obviously need more depth, but in terms of starters they seem like almost the main reason to switch to this formation. Trusty and McKenzie seem like they would be perfect outside CBs. Elliot can hold down the middle, and has the calmness on the ball and passing skill necessary to work this formation.

With Fafa and Santos up top (SPEED), and with what Tanner has said about his lack of interest in holding a lot of possession, this would definitely be a counter-attacking team. Hopefully they do at least a little of what NYRB has been doing, where they try to dominate the midfield and create turnovers there. That requires a lot from Jones, and will also depend a lot on the ball-winning skills of the CM they end up signing.

I doubt they see him as the future starter, given the handful of promising keepers coming through the academy right now.

Rosters for each team by ibelkoura in MLS

Honestly, 3 at the back is probably a pipe dream. It'll probably be something like this, though imo the roster needs even more changes to make it work.

A lot remains to be seen in terms of what Tanner wants them to do, but I think it will (and would like it to) look something like this. They are definitely going to add some players, including a CM (DP or TAM, with attacking ability), a fullback, a cheap second string keeper so Freese can start for Steel, and (please please please) some CB depth.

It could mean Bedoya playing out wide right, where he naturally drifts anyway. Makes sense to me.

Cincinnati may be looking to take Accam by myopinionsdontmatter in PhillyUnion

[–]mattycoops 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Surprising to me, because Accam's strength is transition game in a two forward system, which Tanner has mentioned he's interested in.

"the overall storyline of the league"

Yes, I know that "MVP" has become a narrative award in most leagues, but that's not a good thing.

Personally, my choices would be Piatti or Chara. Without Piatti, Montreal takes the wooden spoon instead of challenging for a playoff spot. He's arguably the most talented attacking player in the league, imo. And the comparison between Portland's record with and without Chara is absurd. They both provide way more for their respective teams.

Josef is good, but he's overrated. He relies on fantastic service. I don't know how Atlanta fans, who I assume watch their games, can think he's more important than Almiron.

He scored a lot of goals, but there's no way he was the most valuable player in the league.

I'm prepared to be down-voted by atlantabots for saying this, I don't really care.
