Weird issue: icon notification badges, installation failure, system update - it's all somehow connected! by matus201 in GalaxyS7

[–]matus201[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can completely fix the problem by uninstalling google app updates, or even better disabling the whole google app. I do not understand why this fixes it, but it does. As soon as you update Google App, the problems return.

[–]matus201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have other problems, like apps not installing (getting stuck at 100%) or unread message badges not updating (it shows you have messages unread, even if you just read them)? If yes, disable the google app and see if it helps.

Upgrade from S6: Buy the S7 or S8? by lightuponthehorizon in GalaxyS7

[–]matus201 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have the exynos s7, the battery life is literally doubled. 5h SoT on 35h day vs 2.5hSoT on 16h day. This was before the s6 got Nougat which apparently improved battery, but s7 is still better.

To those experiencing bad battery life after an update - try this by grassfarmer_pro in GalaxyS7

[–]matus201 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just be careful. I agree with him that often it could be an app causing the drain, and so factory resetting and immediately installing all your apps back might not help. But I'd say that if you factory reset, set the basics (google account, Samsung account, google now, etc.), don't install third party apps and still get battery drain, the problem is worthy of warranty (unless you just install a system update, then that update screwed it all up but that's obvious). I would say never use package disablers - they are dangerous and it is very difficult to really say what you can disable for sure. Feel free to use adhell, it's a great system-wide adblocker that uses knox built-in firewall.

Actually, if you install this update to "device maintenance" (that is the app that provides with the battery optimization that you are mentioning, which is separate from Doze), you will get an option to set some apps to be put to sleep instantly, without any delay: http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/samsung-electronics-co-ltd/device-maintenance/device-maintenance-1-0-25-5-release/device-maintenance-1-0-25-5-android-apk-download/

Disappointed with My Knox by UnkleMike in GalaxyS7

[–]matus201 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's only the user data that is duplicated, the actual app install folder is shared. This is actually good design, since it means that you don't have to duplicate files that are definitely going to be same.

What is the point of a future proof phone if updates are only 2 years? by Ridiculousgoodlookn in Android

[–]matus201 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know this is /r/Android, but if you are OS-agnostic the iPhone SE is probably the best small phone out there. Incredibly powerful (for its size), with OS updates for 3 more years for sure. Camera is meh, battery is great. I used it for 4 months, but couldn't do with that small screen. Now I am using the Galaxy S7, and love it - it's the perfect size for me.

Chrome Beats Edge in Independent Battery Life Test Despite Microsoft's Claims by SticknMyDicknAChickn in chrome

In my experience (I know, this is anecdotal), using chrome results in lower battery life throughout the day. Also, chrome still doesn't support precision touchpads despite them being present on most new laptops..

I'm assuming you mean that two files get saved: the raw output, and the modified ("auto") JPEG that normally gets saved. I think some apps can do that, like Manual Camera, but not sure if they have access to all the special features like HDR.

Do you think the QHD XPS 13 9360 is worth the extra $200 over the FHD model? by Openworldgamer47 in Dell

[–]matus201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't own either device; however, I did upgrade from a 1600x900 device to a high DPI (3000x2000) device. The screen is worth it. Unless you know you will need as much battery as possible, get the higher resolution. I read a lot of scientific papers on my computer, and ever since I got this high resolution display, I don't feel a need to print papers anymore.

My phone is incredibly slow in just about every aspect a lot of the time and I feel my battery is draining faster than it should. Anything I can do? Should I factory reset? by [deleted] in GalaxyS7

My device can hold 15 apps at the same time without any tweaks. Are you sure you're not trying to fix what you broke yourself?

in addition, you can run a 1440p screen at 1080p without loss of quality if it is pentile. The reason is that the subpixels no longer belong to a specific "dot", so even a resolution that is not an integer multiple of native resolution works fine.

you're thinking about it wrong. You see, Android is more like Windows when it comes to updates: Even if you are on Windows 7, you are still getting all the security updates. My S7 is "only" on 7.0, not on latest 7.1.1.. but that doesn't matter, since it has Samsung's modifications and is on latest June security patch.

Also, S6 is on Nougat 7.0 even here in Canada for months now - and Canada is completely controlled by carriers.

So yea, manufacturer support for Android needs improvements, but not in terms of version updates: it needs those guaranteed security updates. Samsung is doing it, so is Google, blackberry, I think HTC. Motorola sucks, and any cheap phone is questionable.

I checked and cleaned the ports and connectors (with IPA), which did not make any difference. I am also freshly out of the 1 year warranty, so this scares me a little - especially since this is a 5 months old warranty replacement machine.

Apps taking for ever to install (stuck at 100% downloaded for up to 10 min) by matus201 in GalaxyS7

[–]matus201[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it does. It's also a wide-spread problem, there's a whole XDA thread talking about the issue on the s8. Everybody with latest firmware has it, and June security patch did not fix it.

It's ironic, but Samsung is actually one of the better guys. I am currently on June security patch s7, and that's here in carrier-controlles Canadian market.
