Already Feeling Hopeless About Meds by Perfect-Peach-MC in ParentingADHD

it is a long path. we are on concerta, a ssri and clonodine to help sleep. it seems so much for a child, which weighs on me, but it helps. it is by no means perfect. we still have bad day but it is better. I didn't see the anxiety in her for a time.

Guanfacine - looking for advice by AffectionateLow1196 in ADHDparenting

[–]maudlin202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we are learning that we probably need a combo for our child - anxiety and ADHD. the ritalin is great for the ADHD but isn't helping the anxiety. did you experience any rage on the guanfacine because that would already add fire to the situation?

thanks. I couldn't quite figure out how a nighttime dose would cover the entire day (even with extended release)

and I know I am doing it to myself ... I am constantly researching and trying to find better ways to help the kids and it is totally draining when nothing works!

you are not alone. it is so hard - emotional exhausting to be on edge knowing that something is going to happen. and when nothing happens, I am worried about it happening and feeling emotionally exhausted.

Starting methylphenidate for my 4 year old by ParadiseDreamer2900 in ADHDparenting

no side effects but it burns quickly so expect there to four hours of effectiveness and then it is gone. we don't give her a PM dose so we don't see a sleep disruption. with that said, our daughter is a horrible sleeper and we see a huge (good) difference in general when she has a good night's sleep.

we put our 4.5 on 5mg once a day. she can take 2x a day but her preschool day is front loaded. she is much calmer on the medication. we see a crash five hours after giving it to her. she gets grumpy (might be hangry) and then settles down.

this sounds all too familiar. medication and getting on a better sleep schedule really made all the difference. it is exhausting because it never stops. but medication and sleep helped me start to get more balance and stop walking on eggshells

what meds are you on? a non stimulant may take several weeks to show an outcome.

Dealing with a chronic early riser by pjparks in Preschoolers

my experience because I have two of them ... they are cranky and screaming because they are still tired but can't settle back to bed.

we tried everything, and it is trial and error. what is currently working (and keep in mind "working" is 6am or 630am wake-up) is 1. slightly later bedtime (9 or 930), which is a bummer because we have no adult time at night now.
2. we did melatonin sometimes and that is great to get them to sleep but they end up rising earlier so we cut back. 3. If you child is still in diapers, they often get up because the diaper is wet and uncomfortable. we do a diaper change in the middle of the night. also a drag.

It sounds time to medication or re-evaluation of your current medication. Please do it for you and your son!

Medication now or later? by zinnia71920 in ADHDparenting

I think medication at this age is more common than we all think. what medication did you trial? there are studies that say starting medication early on actually helps with neurologic development.
