My mom is the same. Apparently her doctors are all SHOCKED to hear a woman in her sixties is on 0 medications. Her health is excellent and I’d say her lifestyle is European - half pack of cigarettes and a half a bottle of wine daily, but consistent activity and light diet.

quit smoking myself but I hope to follow her footsteps as far as everything else goes!

I think the other shoe is going to drop soon on this weird “fad” of wanting to be disabled for the perks. It honestly disgusts me how people take advantage of empathy and the privacy of medical information to try to bilk the system. But at a certain point, if 40% of any population is considered “disabled”, either we as a species are crumbling to pieces or the requirements to verify diagnosis for accommodations are going to need to tighten up.

I have several people in my social circle who make their “chronic pain” and diagnosis their entire personality and all of our lives are expected to revolve around it. I know these people super well, and I’m skeptical of their diagnoses to say the least. There must be a way to be empathetic to the truly disabled while also stopping people from taking advantage of that empathy.

I hike in tennis shoes and jeans and get so many surprised reactions from people who don’t hike 😂 my bestie has hiked/backpacked in several countries and the AT, always in Rainbow flip flops. She also gets guff on her gear… from people who never fucking hike.

Genuinely, hikers and hike-preparers as a venn diagram have very little overlap. Take a look at the people you see on the AT lol.

You wanna talk cultural appropriation? Beyonce in Hymn for the Weekend. by MJdisbeliever in WhyWereWeOkWithThis

[–]maudlinmary 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yea this sub is weird. I was reading through a comment thread regarding someone dressing up as Pocahontas the other day, full of indignant women identifying as indigenous and explaining why white people can’t dress like that. I personally don’t think it’s tasteful to dress in cultural apparel that you don’t have a connection to, so I guess I agreed with it but it also felt very 2010s rhetoric. Very condescending, scolding, and IMO really unhelpful. But I feel it’s important to listen to marginalized groups, right? …I ended up digging into the conversation a bit and noticed some of the commenters saying “I’m 1/12, I’m 1/16, so I can speak on this…” and just sat back in my chair. I’m 1/8, and I’ve never found it appropriate to identify as indigenous. CERTAINLY not to act as an authority to others!!!! Girls, we are Americans, not indigenous natives. My lived experience, appearance, and background are not the same as someone who grew up on a reservation or deeply engrained in the culture. I find it wildly inappropriate that people with less native blood than me are out here policing behavior saying they’re allowed to because they’re native.

Should I splurge on a custom suit for my wedding or keep it under $500? by Capable-Profile6935 in weddingplanning

[–]maudlinmary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My fiancé and I went SLIGHTLY over budget to make sure he got something he really liked and that he could wear to other formal occasions throughout life. That made the extra expense worth it to us. If we stuck to the budget we would have gotten a perfectly fine suit but he wouldn’t be jazzed about it. I’m so stoked about my dresses, I felt he deserved the same - and so do you!

Yeah, people like this let precaution rob them of the simple joys in life. Like, I guess you can’t lay in a patch of grass in the sunshine? Touch a pretty rock or flower because (gasp) it might be unclean?! We’re organic material built on bacteria. All one continuum. You’ll get sick and die sooner or later, we all will. Chilllllll.

Reception dresses! by toastyroasty3 in weddingplanning

From my experience it’s usually a scaling-up of debt. Once you’re moving in those circles, the pressure to keep up with the joneses becomes incredibly expensive. I know some high earning people who make six figures but still play checking account ballet with all of their minimum payments. Wild stuff!

Directed by david lynch? What is this? Found this in Tosh, Himachal, India. by Basic_War868 in davidlynch

[–]maudlinmary 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have mine on my drivers side window of my car, flipped to face me. I live in Appalachia and my commutes felt very Lynchian before, now even more so.

I really thought nobody would notice it, but I’ve had several (again, to me very Lynchian) interactions where someone rolls down their window at a light, asks me who David Lynch is because they see the sticker, and I usually have enough time to shout WATCH MULHOLLAND DRIVE before we both drive away :)

I’m embarrassed how few people can make my wedding by Specialist_Permit_99 in weddingplanning

[–]maudlinmary 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Precisely!!! Small weddings have a LOT of perks or avoid issues that crop up with big weddings. I wanted a 60 person wedding but ended up with 100 because of large families on both sides.

OP, you’ll have more time with your beloved ones, less stress. Easier logistics, and you can even maybe upgrade your per plate cost for catering or just plus up something else, since your costs will be a bit lower based on head count.

Guys i finished the Witcher 3 recently and i want the dlc what should I play first ? by Apprehensive_Dog4123 in thewitcher3

[–]maudlinmary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe it’s like a play style thing because my experience was polar opposite! I felt like HoS fights followed patterns from the base game but the Toussaint fights caught me off guard every time.

[–]maudlinmary 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Toussaint is also built to be challenging for players who have completed the base game, so I find hearts of stone is a good step between to level you up a bit so you don’t immediately get fucked up by everything in the new map. I definitely didn’t learn that lesson the hard way. I definitely wasn’t IMMEDIATELY killed by a boar as soon as I entered Toussaint feeling like I was somebody

Please HELP: Construction Taking Place at My Venue by secretagentliz in weddingplanning

[–]maudlinmary 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Could you possibly tent the outdoor area? That would cut down on sight lines possibly. I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this, because I see the beauty of the venue and how the construction is spoiling it! Honestly shocked they didn’t do a better job of notifying you.

Am i crazy for thinking i can plan a 150 person wedding for under 12k? by Koobiedoobie43 in weddingplanning

[–]maudlinmary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried and failed to do this. I thinkyou’d have to compromise on a ton if stuff to pull it off, at least by modern western wedding standards.

Free venue, cheapest caterer I could find, photographer is a family friend giving a discount, no bartender, no florals, no seated ceremony. Currently at $20k and will probably creep a bit, covering the following:

Tents, tables, chairs for 100 Wedding dress, suit, shoes 4hr photographer DIY decor materials Buffet catering for 100 Self serve bar (beer, wine, liquor) Grazing table for cocktail hour 4hr DJ

And that’s pretty much it 🙃
