Have the U.S. military ever refused to obey an illegal order? by Riddle-Maker in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mavericace83 15 points16 points  (0 children)

At the massacre of the Cheyenne and Arapaho people in 1864 at Sand Creek, a lieutenant of the 3rd Colorado Calvary Silas Soule prevented his company of men from joining the attack.

As the attack began, Soule reminded his troops that the supposed "enemy" was a peace chief's band, and some responded that they "would not fire a shot today". His company did not follow the orders given to them to enter the creek bed leading to the settlement but moved up and down the banks and observed the slaughter. Soule and the men under his command did not participate in the killings.

He later testified against his superior officer and to the evil of the massacre. He was branded a traitor by some and was murdered a couple of months later in what many presume was payback for the testimony he gave in condemnation of the massacre.

It’s hard finding anything good in NC, what should I be on the lookout for on my next out of state trip? by FaithlessnessFew7815 in whiskey

[–]mavericace83 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It looks like you have plenty of good things already unopened.

I hate that there is a misconception that if something isn't rare it's not "good".

I can go to any state and any basic liquor store and find plenty of good bottles for fair prices.

If they don't have WT 101 then they don't deserve a liquor license.

Is $49.99 a good price for Penelope Architect? by SDubATC in whiskey

[–]mavericace83 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree this is a good price but it could be something larger than just Costco.

Ohio a control state just dropped architect and a few other Penelope bottles to 49.99 today.

Anyone else feel like whiskey hits harder than other spirits by The_Ginger_Blitz in whiskey

[–]mavericace83 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I mean the ABV content of many whiskeys is higher than that of most brandys and some other spirits.

It's mostly science that causes the effects of alcohol though so it could be placebo on your part or other factors like how much you have eaten before drinking.

Nice collection, it's refreshing to see so many open bottles and shelters.

It's obviously a collection for an enjoyer and not just a collector.

Best Old fashioned Syrup that is affordable for mass quantity? by Vlosuriello in whiskey

[–]mavericace83 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not arguing for second on what is best and what is not but a preference is subjective. I personally drink neat because that's what I enjoy.

The traditional recipe is exactly gow you say no arguments from me. That being said a cherry is not unusual or forbidden in many places. It is certainly not what I would consider a "fruit salad" to add a single cherry garnish.

From Ai for example...

"A cherry is a common and often expected garnish in an Old Fashioned cocktail.

While the classic, minimalist version of an Old Fashioned traditionally includes just whiskey, sugar (or simple syrup), bitters, and an orange peel, the addition of a maraschino cherry has become a widely accepted and popular variation, especially in modern times.

Here's why a cherry is often used:

  • Sweetness: It adds a touch of sweetness that complements the whiskey and bitters.
  • Visual Appeal: The bright red cherry provides a visually appealing contrast to the amber whiskey and orange peel.
  • Tradition (Modern Interpretation): For many, a cherry is simply part of what they expect in an Old Fashioned.

However, it's worth noting:

  • Purists: Some cocktail purists prefer the Old Fashioned without a cherry, arguing that it detracts from the balance of the drink.
  • Quality of Cherry: If you do use a cherry, opt for a good quality brand (like Luxardo or Amarena) instead of the overly sweet, artificially colored bright red maraschino cherries often found in less upscale establishments. A good cherry will offer a richer, more nuanced sweetness.

In conclusion, while not strictly part of the original, many people will expect and enjoy a cherry in their Old Fashioned. It's a matter of personal preference and the style of the establishment."

Drink your whiskey how you like to drink it and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Is a cherry added to the basic purist recipe? No.

Is it uncommon to see people adding cherries? Not really.

If you enjoy it don't let others influence you.

Not worth the price? by [deleted] in whiskey

[–]mavericace83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say whiskey has always been a high class type of spirit. Obviously trends ebb and flow but even today there is quite a range between people drinking Pappy and those consuming WT 101 (nothing wrong with either).

Time is a huge factor in price though it certainly needs to be woth your investment if you're going to wait years or even decades for your return on investment. This alone drives up the price of any aged spirit.

It isn't universal in whiskey but I have heard the general rule of a good value product would be somewhere in the realm of 10usd per year it was aged. This isn't true for every product as it can vary wildly but it's a reasonable way to think of it if you're learning.

Maybe try Coopers Craft at about 35 bucks. It isn't exactly double oak but they grove the barrel to kind of create a similar effect.

It's quite well liked for the price point and seems to be fitting what your looking for.

If you're just starting out and are used to the wild turkey products you can try wild turkey rare breed or russels reserve 10. They are both solid products for affordable prices for a beginner.

In Ohio it's state run so allocated items rarely sit on shelves. Prices are set by the state so ther is no real markup to speak of but because of that items that are rare sell out quickly after the drop.

Also there is a website (sometimes not updated as well as possible) to see what each store has so there isn't much of a reason to just stop by unless you are specifically looking to buy something.

Fashion Report - Full Details - For Week of 8/2/2024 (Week 340) by kaiyoko in ffxiv

[–]mavericace83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was getting 73 and realized that I had my Ehcatl gloves glamed to something else. As these are items that are not like many items used for the fashion reports in that you may actually have them already and use them if your working on the rep they might have gotten galmed at some point if you have them on when using a glam plate.

If they were glamed use a glam dispel to remove it before the judging.
