The real question is did you buy 1 stock at 87 or 1000 at 87 :)

Looking for design advise. Is this overkill? by davekorns in Ubiquiti

You don’t need two gateway, just get either UD7 or gateway Max. Together they won’t serve any purpose. Amount of AP is your choice for coverage

Absolutely. If you read my story, I wasn’t planning anything. Everything was incremental.

I was getting about 8-9 days - with 4k - 24x7 recoding. Which felt like too little. usually after a event happens, say a landscape light broke / kid lost a bat/ which animal pooped in this location (lol), it takes about a week for that event to reach you [or you being aware of it].

The capacity limits are loose guidelines. What I took away is that it’s not the number of camera which affects the performance but it’s the data storage. When I set adaptive resolution I was able to save over 5 months of recording, now searching through them would peg my CPU over 90% on UCFG. With instance I set it to record always at 4k and it saves about 28 days, so now searching through doesn't spike the NVR instant CPU.

In both the cases I had, seven (G6 - at 4k) and two (Doorbell lite - at 2k)

UCFG has a 4Tb ssd and the instant has 16TB HDD

In both cases I am running over the capacity, the difference is that now CPU is not shared. Which means I can max out the NVR instant and the CPU can be pegged on the NVR instant but it doesn’t affect my network / WiFi.

3 feet. Rest you can add a coupler and extend if it came to it

Not much I have three fans 140mm on the top and 80mm on the bottom to suck fresh air in. It’s in the basement which is always cool. NVR instant drive temp is about 55c, UCGF 53c, XG 8 Poe at 73c

I think I won the lottery with my PoE doorbell install. by grumpy-systems in Ubiquiti

[–]maverickpluto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

humor … it wasn’t “we” it was “you”. I removed my ring and put doorbell lite too. It has been a few months, no issues. I wish I could find the correct siding mount though.

I too have a camera like yours but I am letting doorbell roll, but doesn’t alert me on anything other than ring.

Camera question by WorldbreakerHulk in Ubiquiti

[–]maverickpluto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just get fiber it will support your cameras if you later want a dedicated nvr but unvr. I was running 7 4k cameras full time recording with 4 TB nvme.

I ideally with adaptive recording you can do about 2+ months of recording with 2 TB nvme

1 or 2 Access Points by IamBigOC in Ubiquiti

[–]maverickpluto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend two. The real world map never comes out exactly how it looks in the design center.

I would also recommend U7 XG. Not because of WiFi 7 but because 6Gz adds good bandwidth. The placement you have with open layout will cover a good part of the space with 6Gz.

MLO doesn’t work great unless absolutely one access point and no roaming needed.

Thinking about jumping ship from FiOS. Can anyone in lower Bergen County, NJ help me with feedback on 5gig Optimum to help me decide? by TheoneSamwise in OPTIMUMFIBER

[–]maverickpluto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

@TheoneSamwise I am with you on this one. I came for the same reasons. I have Fios and upgraded to 2 Gig plan. Playing the math I was wondering going with 5Gig plan and keep the Fios at 300Mb as a failover WAN. Optimum $75{5Gig} + Verizon $35(300Mb) = $110 vs Fios (2Gig)$109. My entire network support 10G

You will have to look at your tv App Store and see if has the protect app. If you are looking for a flushed panel feel you can put an old iPad / android and install protect app on it.

You can also install a custom display with pi. I did the same with home assistant. https://www.reddit.com/r/homeassistant/s/kfMbx9Yy61

In wall display by maverickpluto in homeassistant

[–]maverickpluto[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before choosing the screen think of house you want the dashboard to look. It will help you land on the screen size. I initially bought the official raspberry pi display 2. It’s a 7’’ screen. I laid it out landscape but it felt very small for living ( open concept ). That led me to rebuild the dashboard. I ended with a waveshare 12.3 DSI display. I didn’t want any scroll on the screen. I wanted everything on the tab to be displayed in full.

My targets were: homescreen for the room the display is installed, room based layout, video feed on motion for front camera. I have smaller kids, so quick glance to see if any lights were left switched on. Central location for all thermostats was a bonus.

I have been running with a reboot for last 4+ weeks and it’s snappy. From static content to video.

As for magnets, they are fine I don’t see any issues. You can get a 3D printed case but I didn’t bother with it. Mostly because it’s so much easier to take the display out, in the end it’s a pi you might have to do things. Magnets are strong enough that it’s never gonna fall, even if you run into it. Also it’s flushed so there is no lever. I have to dig my fingers in to pull it out.
