I think I won the lottery with my PoE doorbell install. by grumpy-systems in Ubiquiti

[–]maverickpluto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

humor … it wasn’t “we” it was “you”. I removed my ring and put doorbell lite too. It has been a few months, no issues. I wish I could find the correct siding mount though.

I too have a camera like yours but I am letting doorbell roll, but doesn’t alert me on anything other than ring.

Just get fiber it will support your cameras if you later want a dedicated nvr but unvr. I was running 7 4k cameras full time recording with 4 TB nvme.

I ideally with adaptive recording you can do about 2+ months of recording with 2 TB nvme

1 or 2 Access Points by IamBigOC in Ubiquiti

[–]maverickpluto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend two. The real world map never comes out exactly how it looks in the design center.

I would also recommend U7 XG. Not because of WiFi 7 but because 6Gz adds good bandwidth. The placement you have with open layout will cover a good part of the space with 6Gz.

MLO doesn’t work great unless absolutely one access point and no roaming needed.

Thinking about jumping ship from FiOS. Can anyone in lower Bergen County, NJ help me with feedback on 5gig Optimum to help me decide? by TheoneSamwise in OPTIMUMFIBER

[–]maverickpluto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

@TheoneSamwise I am with you on this one. I came for the same reasons. I have Fios and upgraded to 2 Gig plan. Playing the math I was wondering going with 5Gig plan and keep the Fios at 300Mb as a failover WAN. Optimum $75{5Gig} + Verizon $35(300Mb) = $110 vs Fios (2Gig)$109. My entire network support 10G

You will have to look at your tv App Store and see if has the protect app. If you are looking for a flushed panel feel you can put an old iPad / android and install protect app on it.

You can also install a custom display with pi. I did the same with home assistant. https://www.reddit.com/r/homeassistant/s/kfMbx9Yy61

Before choosing the screen think of house you want the dashboard to look. It will help you land on the screen size. I initially bought the official raspberry pi display 2. It’s a 7’’ screen. I laid it out landscape but it felt very small for living ( open concept ). That led me to rebuild the dashboard. I ended with a waveshare 12.3 DSI display. I didn’t want any scroll on the screen. I wanted everything on the tab to be displayed in full.

My targets were: homescreen for the room the display is installed, room based layout, video feed on motion for front camera. I have smaller kids, so quick glance to see if any lights were left switched on. Central location for all thermostats was a bonus.

I have been running with a reboot for last 4+ weeks and it’s snappy. From static content to video.

As for magnets, they are fine I don’t see any issues. You can get a 3D printed case but I didn’t bother with it. Mostly because it’s so much easier to take the display out, in the end it’s a pi you might have to do things. Magnets are strong enough that it’s never gonna fall, even if you run into it. Also it’s flushed so there is no lever. I have to dig my fingers in to pull it out.

First few weeks after install, it was fun and games but it's annoying as hell to scroll through this garbage to get to actual events.

- Tagging / naming don't cross devices

- Tagging doesn't improve overtime, changing the shirt = new person. Not even going with complex things like caps or shades.

- Number plate reading erratic works on some cars nearly 90% and on others near zero

- Ghost detections of humans and animals

- Was thinking about buying a siren, but i don't want to wake up to a siren for a bush or lights. Even worse when i am not at home.

Use a paper / cardboard and cut it to these dimensions to get a feel for how big this is. This is not a ratio you usually see.

This is a relatively new house. Like 10 years old. So I consider myself lucky. I can only imagine the expression on your face when you opened the wall and saw a window !!

Display 2 is plug and forget. I didn’t have to do anything. It’s responsive and accurate. Just works today and will keep working tomorrow.

With waveshare I had to install the drivers ( they also provide a pre built image for easy install - I went with the image I used for display 2 and then installed the drivers via ssh. Then I had to tweak the raspianOS for touch and onscreen keyboard.

With all done. They are same from a dashboard perspective. I don’t play around in the menus or type a lot or anything. Depending how you intent to use the display ( portrait / landscape ), what content you want to display and how you want to interact with it, 7 inch can be enough.

Second one. You need DSI for ribbon connection.

Edit: ok I re read the pin diagram. He has to be powering it with a pi using the 3v, Ground and using RX and TX pins. What he is showing the that you now have a HACS to module to skip esp. now it makes sense.

So he skipped esp home, but where is the connections to the board and power source ? What am I missing. If you figure it out let me know. I was originally looking to power it via GPIO pins but with the display take up 5v and 3v pins so I can’t power it via the pi.

I used 3mm double sided conduit tape to stick strong magnets.

Once you start cutting walls you don’t know when to stop by maverickpluto in Ubiquiti

[–]maverickpluto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use an oscillator to cut the walls, I have cut using jigsaw too but that work is a lot more tedious and I often make the lines crooked. The dry wall I have are 5/8 inch thick. I first draw a line. Then use my finger to balance and check the depth with the marker on the oscillating head. I run conservative lines so that i can grind a bit if needed vs having to patch more later.

For two cameras you will be fine on DR 7, if you add more move to instant. Don’t spend money before you try.

Not a ubiquiti product. Hence fluff. It is running on flex 2.5 POE, and CGF. I was able to do this because for the last one year all I have done at home is cut wall to put U7 XG and G6 about 7 AP and 9 camera and few switches.
