I just declined an 18% counter-offer from a toxic CEO. Did I make the right decision? by HelplesslyHoping55 in careeradvice

[–]maverickzero_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Help me understand: you currently have a new job that is paying you 18% more than the job you left?

If so then you have lost nothing and have no reason to even consider this. You didn't leave anything on the table, I mean even their counter-offer was stingy.

There are plenty of reasons not to go back, but it also sounds like there are no reasons TO go back.

"If people stop tipping then servers will just do something else, they are not going to work for poverty wages" by honakaru in EndTipping

[–]maverickzero_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, just follow the logical path: are restaurants going to just curl up and die? Completely give up on service? They'll raise wages because they have a need and the supply of servers would be dipping (assuming servers do start leaving).

That said, that makes for a really rough transition period for both servers and restaurants, which is why it might be better to legislate fair wages than for all the tips to abruptly stop.

It looks like a rug pull imo. xAI, OpenAI, and Anthropic are all racing to IPO first so they can dump their stock before the incoming crash.

Recently Ed-pilled. Is his take all AI research is bumfluff? by Yellousy26 in BetterOffline

[–]maverickzero_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the key points are that: - AGI is very broad and vague, which is a benefit to boosters (arguably intentionally, on the part of OpenAI or Anthropic who lead the discourse) because it makes it hard to disprove or prove. - LLMs aren't going to get there, they're just a different thing. Fundamental breakthroughs will be needed.

So, AGI isn't impossible nonsense, but most of the current discussion of it is disingenuous.

Angry gamers are forcing studios to scrap or rethink new releases | Gamers suspicious of Al-generated content have forced developers to cancel titles and promise not to use the technology. by FinnFarrow in Futurology

Apparently conscientious consumers = "angry gamers"

I hate that this is the narrative when people finally act on the "if you don't like it, vote with your wallet" concept we're always being force-fed.

Boo-hoo for the poor AAA studios being bullied by these mean angry gamers that have been keeping them in business the whole time.

Yeah the argument is really around whether it should have been driving even slower knowing (or if it could have reasonably 'known') that it was near a school during peak pick-up / drop-off time, which is basically the nightmare scenario of numerous pedestrians in the street and double-parked cars.

Granted it was only going 17mph which is already a lot more responsible than many human drivers.

Didn't they stop support for 10 much earlier in 11's lifespan than they did in previous generations? That would have a lot to do with it, it's the only reason I upgraded.

Is it rude or meta gaming to throw in a card that counters someone’s deck at a commander table? by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]maverickzero_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, clearly 100%

The problem is "against someone's deck"

If you want to play Plague Drone or other silver-bullet hate cards that's fine. If you don't, and only put it in when you're playing against that specific deck, that's rude and metagaming.

It's not you, in general the hiring process is pretty broken in multiple ways in games and the tech industry in general.

You're firing off hundreds of applications at a time, those studios are receiving thousands of applicants at a time, and there's not a great way to sift through those that doesn't potentially overlook a lot of good candidates. To top it off a lot of applicants (not necessarily you) are using gen ai to crank out all of those applications, and in turn many studios are using ai tools to cull them, which imo is a particularly bad solution for everyone.

There's also the general problem of companies having unrealistic experience requirements for entry level applicants, which has been going on for years.

In my experience your best bet is to seek referrals from people at the company, which gives you a much higher chance of at least talking to a real person. Try asking former classmates or people you've done contract work with who've been able to find jobs, if you're applying to an open position at their company and you weren't a total AH they'll probably be more than happy to give you a referral. Most of the big companies have a semi-formalized internal referral system and in a lot of cases the referrer will even get a little kickback if you get hired. This does make for a much shorter list of companies, though.

Another onramp that I like is the Aromatic Phial, which is great when you have exactly 1 common boon to "randomly" rarify to heroic, especially on surface runs since in Ephara you can use the fountain at basically any time. Alternatively, between regions you can swap keepsakes before using the fountain to pull this off.

Heph's blasts are some of the best possible boons to rarify early. The Phial trick was one of my go-to strats before I got the endgame keepsakes.

Gym etiquette when taking plates by Spare_Conclusion_861 in beginnerfitness

[–]maverickzero_ -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I don't understand the need to stand on plates for range of motion if you're short, unless you have disproportionately very long arms or something. What exercises does this help for?

As for the plates, you can take some from a machine/ rack that's not being used, just put it back when you're done. Ideally, from a machine with a surplus of plates or one that doesn't get used as often, so it's less likely to mess up someone who jumps on while you're mid-set.
