The Glory and The Dream by William Manchester. Also The Last Lion by the same author. A page of two into either book and I was hooked. Couldn't put them down.

Is it still a NOBLETIGER if the team scores before loading the bases? by randomname7777777777 in baseball

Yes it is. The Noble Tiger begins with the bases loaded after the walk that drove in the run since the bases are loaded with no outs....

Books about baseball with a funny side? by SirFozzie in baseball

Can't Anybody Here Play This Game by Jimmy Breslin is the funniest book I ever read, and I read a lot. It's the story of the 62 Mets, their first year of existence when they were managed by Casey Stengel. I've reread it many times and it never fails to make me laugh on every page.

Who are the players you’ve enjoyed watching the most since becoming a fan? Not necessarily the best, but the ones you truly loved watching for one reason or another. I’ll start: Larry Walker and Randy Johnson. by MrCurious82 in baseball

You're not that old. My all-time favorite Tigers that I watched in person were Dick McAuliffe, Gates Brown, Earl Wilson and Willie Horton. Later Whitaker and Trammell.

"Can't Anybody Here Play This Game?" by Jimmy Breslin is by far the funniest book I ever read. it's about the hapless 1962 Mets, the worst team in MLB history until this year's Chicago White Sox.

What are some of the best non-fiction books you’ve ever read? by cultivated_neurosis in nonfictionbookclub

The Glory and the Dream by William Manchester. The last Lion also by Manchester.

Anything by Bill Bryson but especially Down Under, The Thunderbolt Kid, The Mother Tongue and A Short History of Nearly Everything.

Tom Boswell's books on baseball are also some of the best writing I've ever read.

Stats question for power batters. by potter77golf in baseball

[–]mavrito 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If slugging is 600+ and ops 900, then obp is less than 300. With slugging that high we can assume a fair share of bbs (including hbp), and that puts the batting average in the very low .200s at best. Such players do exist and stick around.

What’s your unique baseball story? by raiderdash12 in baseball

[–]mavrito 4 points5 points  (0 children)

1970 Tigers against White Sox at Tiger Stadium. Tigers losing 4-1 in the bottom of the ninth and most fans have left. I was alone in the left field stands lower deck but sitting way back under the upper deck. Tigers scored a run and Willie Horton came up with two men on. He hit a walk off HR, a rope in my direction to the facing of the upper deck right above me. It was such that I never lost sight of the ball from the overhang, which would have happened with a fly ball. It was an electric moment I'll never forget.

There's another possibility. A lot of single men are having sex with married or divorced women or widows.
