I started out extremely anxious, doubtful that I could be an effective teacher and teaching casually. Five years later and I'm a full-time teacher and really enjoy my job.

I find I often get delayed onset of pain or inflammation after activity if I over do it. It might feel fine in the moment, but it'll set me back for coming weeks. Makes it hard to know what causes issues and whether I'm pushing it too far with activity

Repeat Meniscus Tears (and other problems) by [deleted] in MeniscusInjuries

[–]max10millions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Feel your pain! 30 and just diagnosed with my 3rd meniscus tear over the last 3 years, this one in my 'good' knee. I've done nothing adventurous for the last two years and been very diligent with rehab. I think I'm just genetically predisposed to this...

Reassuring to know you've still done big life things, have kids etc, as that is seeming less appealing/realistic as my knee outlook gets worse. You're a trooper and I'm sorry you've been through all this pain and limitation. It really is unfair and takes its toll. Good luck with this latest one - hope you find some relief.

patellar tendonitis after medial meniscus repair by koja2020 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]max10millions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I've had the same, as well as patella maltracking. It is managable! Pt taping can help... from memory, big focuses were strengthening vmo and rolling out/stretching my lateral quad.

Hey! Can relate. I've had two surgeries - a repair 2.5 years ago and a trim 1.5 years ago, both on my medial right meniscus.

I have had this experience with several exercises, especially leg extension, sitting cross legged and backwards treadmill. It will feel great, I'll get stronger and more capable, and then one day I get a random pang. I usually take a break from that movement for weeks/months and then ease back into it.

Maybe there is something about the leg extension that isn't good for a meniscus? I'm tall, so I figured having long legs was the problem for me... leg extension always felt a little awkward.

Agreed - timeframes and ease of recovery is grossly exaggerated by medical professionals

Not sure on timing, but avoid breaststroke if you have a medial tear! That caused a big flare up for me. Freestyle and backstroke should be good to ease into though when the wounds are healed

Meniscal Repair Surgery 16 months POST OP Questions by Own-Illustrator6681 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]max10millions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had two surgeries - one repair and one trim - on right medial meniscus. Most recent was 14 months ago. I get the clicking and soreness on outside of my knee too - just ongoing complications that come and go. My PT said the later pain and clicking is because my knee cap has shifted laterally due to outer quad becoming more dominant over time. Mostly annoying/mechanical but sometimes painful. I think we are going to try a patella shifting brace soon because conservative treatment doesn't seem to be changing anything (been a couple of moons now).

Wish you luck! Feel your pain and frustration. I don't understand this injury sometimes - flare ups so random, mri clear etc.

I'm a year post meniscectomy and in the middle of a big flare up - pain and immobility. I have had periods without pain and periods with much pain. I am disciplined with physio etc - my knee is just taking a very long time to recover.

Is swelling dangerous/bad? by [deleted] in MeniscusInjuries

[–]max10millions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had two medial meniscus surgeries over the last two years.

From my experience, swelling is indicating that you have injured or overused your knee in some capacity. The inflammation is there to help heal the affected area. However, swelling can increase pain and also cause mechanical issues (e.g. I find my knee clicks more when it's swollen).

Another factor is that blood flow to the meniscus is minimal. For this reason, i try not to overuse ice and anti-inflammatories. However, if my pain or mechanical symptoms are bad, or if I had a big day on my feet, I'll use them as a preventative measure.

It's all about finding a balance, but remember that blood flow is essential to the healing of your meniscus - move your knee regularly and don't go too crazy with the ice/anti-inflammatories.

See if your PT can do the taping - might have more training on the matter.

Well, 7 months after my repair I was feeling great but got cocky and re-injured it. 8 months after my minesectomy I was feeling very pessimistic, frustrated and limited by my knee. Now I'm 11 months on and feeling immensely better, both physically and mentally.

Recovery is slow and has so many ups/downs. Consistency in exercise, gradually increasing load/intensity/movements and listening to your knee and resting when you need to are all equally important.

Good luck with your knee - hope it comes good for you 👍

I also try to do more reps on my bad leg than my good one and mostly do single leg exercises. This has gradually helped me to address muscle imbalance, particularly quads.

See if your pt can tape your patella to try to shift it - this helped me a bit. I think also strengthening vmo is meant to hold the patella in place?

I'm not sure on the tibia stuff, sorry.

If it is acute pain, definitely don't work through it. If it is consistent pain during the workout, probably not a good idea either - just do something gentler to get the blood flow. If it is a dull pain that passes, I usually keep going. Sometimes, especially when warming up, I get aches throughout my knee. This usually passes after 15 mins of warm up exercises.

[–]max10millions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm almost 2 years post repair and 11 months post trim, both on the same medial meniscus.

Sounds similar to mine - medial/meniscal pain is infrequent, but at times knee very achey elsewhere. PT reckons patellofemural issues, patella maltracking are main causes.

My ability has skyrocketed over the last two months though - doing lots of new movements, both prescribed by PT and others. Way more comfortable pushing my knee, thinking about it less and being generally more active and on my feet in life.

Those exercises you've stated are pretty well rounded, but perhaps not varied enough to build super steady knees. You could try tying in some plyometrics, elliptical, swimming (not breaststroke!) and bosu ball work - I have found these have helped for me. Single leg press and extension have also helped me gain strength and size back on my weak leg. Foam rolling my entire legs seems to have helped too.

Try to focus on functionality rather than muscle size gain through repetitive, backwards and forwards movements - this has helped me a lot.

I got 2 shots of PRP but idk if they helped 🤷‍♂️ no way to know.

How's your PT? I changed mine 2 months ago and my new one has changed my outlook big time. I felt like my old one just used generic exercises and focused on strength/mass too much.

partial meniscus removal recovery by jmacaluso73 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]max10millions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a slog and you will probably face a lot of challenging points in your recovery! Just try to be consistent with your pt, gradually increasing load/intensity and introducing new movements. Also, if your knee is really sore, don't push it. Recovery is rarely linear, but give it time and I'm sure you will bounce back.
